@@wesleyleigh4063 I do. My ears are still sensitive to all the concerns you may hear about the treble peaks in reviews about the Clear headphones. I embrace this because I listen to lots of piano-driven symphonic music and lots of quartet/quintet jazz music. The dynamics on the Clear go just that much further and can reveal some of the scratching ephemera inherit to performance recordings. Think rings in pianos or fingers sliding on cello strings. The bass and definition for the Elex is effin’ great, too. Some go-to tracks I use for testing include Blue in Green by Miles Davis, Chopin Prelude No.15, and Doin’ it Right by Daft Punk. You can score the Elex at great prices used or discounted. Enjoy!

I actually bought the Dx3 Pro+ and Edition XS based on your reviews. Great combo!. I then added an A50S and a 4.4mm balanced cable and use the Dx3 Pro+ as a DAC+pre-amp to the A50S. Man, such a great sound. Even though the A50S is not a truly balanced amp, the difference between single ended and balanced is quite noticeable! I love it! Just a few small issues with the HiFiman Edition XS: 1 - I cannot make the headband "fit" properly. It's fine so long as I don't move my head, but when I do, (to pick up a cup of tea for example) the Edition XS slip and slide so that I have to adjust them on my head again. 2 - the black colour along the outer edge of the cups just under the headband pivot (where my thumbs rest to hold the headphones when I put them on and off) is fading/wearing and the silver/grey "under colour" is coming through. Under six months use - admittedly heavy use, my daily driver if you will - I wear them for many hours every day, consuming and creating content, gaming, everything. 3 - the earpads supplied are "hybrid" leather/mesh, not a fan of that type but I'll get some full leather pads soon.

How is the soundstage and imaging? Can it beat a dynamic driver headphone?
@aaditt46732 жыл бұрын
@@mayahorin9390 I find them (DD and Planars) somewhat similar and somewhat different at the same time. Then again, sound is subjective. There are plenty of dynamic driver headphones that sound incredible. Headphones like the HD800, Z1R, Focal Clear, Grado, and the list goes on. Soundstage for the Edition XS is probably the best I've heard at this price point. I think it's better than the Ananda and Clear; incredibly expansive. The headphones that can really edge this out (to an audible difference) would be the Arya and the HD800, but they are far more expensive. Everything I said up above goes for imaging too (except the Focal Clear which is better but not by a $350 margin). Planars have an insane ability to replicate sound; that's why they are unique. That also means it will treat music not mastered well quite harshly. The sound is more analytical than most dynamic drivers I've heard which isn't necessarily a bad thing. So it all comes down to your taste and what you like.

Listening through XS and the opening music and tones is just so nice. You will not hear the full potential of these kind of beats and musical touches through regular sets. Also wanna add, I bought the 560S and previously owned Dt 770 Pro 80ohm for years. The 560S is very impressive especially when EQ'd. It can deliver pleasing amounts of bass with a reasonable punch authority but it lacks the outright detail and neutral balance the XS brings to the table. XS is also superior in imaging and sound stage if you care about those things. There is something to be said for a smaller, intimate sound stage so I get that. I have been playing with Truth Ear Zero IEM later at night and it's shocking what a $50 IEM brings to the table these days. The XS has so much more going on for it though which makes it a better all arounder and *pleasing* sound signature. XS was made for EDM. It reproduces electronic noises better than anything I've heard. I still think a dynamic driver has its place for hip hop THUMP. I am also still very curious about the HD 600 lineup and might still buy a pair to see what the hype is about. This all being said, the XS is the "next level" and I know for a fact nothing will touch it in that sub bass region where it just delivers this crystalline wall of hot sub bass air... like opening the oven it just hits you with that WOOOMPH. All while maintaining perfect detail and clarity. You never lose any noises in the mix. I have to say I'm also very impressed with how it represents stringed instruments you just hear every detail and the speed is insane... nothing bleeds - ever. Overall as Josh says vocals are not its strongest point and I think that is because XS has a upper mid scoop but this does make listening to anything at higher volumes very natural yet subdued. There is zero "shout" to this headset like the 560S which sounded like you're listening through someone yelling through a parking cone. 560S also has a bit more air on top to really let female vocals whisp and ring out which I do miss. All in all, fantastic headset and clearly superior to anything else I've heard and I don't even bother to EQ it. XS definitely has that magic going on when you are teetering on higher volumes which other headsets cannot match. You can blast to outer space with this thing. Again honorable mention really needs to go to IEM because I get spine tingles with that $50 IEM and I'm just so curious what a $500 IEM sounds like. Of course, XS is a lot more practical to wear all day which I do.

I'm fairly new (18+ months) to this hobby and started out with the 6XX and the Hidizs S9 PRO, which was great to start. I later upgraded to a DAC/AMP stack--SMSL SH/U-8S--and immediately noticed the improvement in sound over the dongle, which is still great for what it is. Agreeing with your point about the imbalance in HP to DAC/AMP ratio, I was on the hunt for better cans. I recently upgraded to the Edition XS and I feel like am finally getting to experience what that next level of HiFi sounds like. I think this $700 reco is a good one and glad you referenced the Schitt stack as some folks may have a little wiggle room in their budget and would benefit from having a more "future proof" DAC/AMP that will allow you to grow the better HPs. I realize that this hobby can become an addiction in wanting to experience that even high level of fidelity, but I am truly satisfied right now the XS. When I A/B compare to the 6XX, you do realize that the 6XX is more of a starter set as nearly all aspects of the sound are improved when you step up to the XS. I won't get rid of the 6XX, but my XS is my "daily driver" for now. Great reviews, perspective and production. You are definitely one of the best YTers reviewing HPs and HiFi equipment. Thanks!

Hi Rick, you've made me feel at ease skipping over the HD 6x0 lineup. I started with 560S and the XS were a clear and present upgrade over them in every way. I felt, oddly, the 560S held their own in the bass department and a slight bit of air but that was it. The XS were nearly perfect out of the box while the 560S required EQ to sound reasonable. Powered by the same Magni amp btw. I am considering going with a Modi because my UMC22 interface is tainting the sound and crippling my max power output I feel. What do you think? Also I hear about people going back to their HD 600 lineup no matter what else they upgrade to. I find this phenomena interesting!

Sundara and DX3 Pro+ here. I considered the XS but backed out since a local-ish retailer had some Sundara B-Stock units and was selling them for 280€ while a new Sundara is 350€ here. So the XS would have been almost double that and they come with the new Hifiman Headband which looks cheap and is a downgrade from the Sundara headband in my opinion. I started with a Fiio K3 which is great for 100€ but the DX3 Pro+ was the logical update to me and I don't regret the purchase at all. There is a noticeable difference between the two DACs especially in detail level and perceived clarity. The best analogy I can come up with is a dirty window that has been cleaned: Everything outside is still the same but now its clearer and you have an easier time looking at it. The DX3 Pro + is 100% worth it and I would even recommend it over any cheaper option since you would upgrade anyway so just buy something better to start with. So my Setup cost me 480€ all in and with some EQ, the channel balance matched to my ears and streaming trough Tidal Hifi its a dream come true. A year ago I used to think my Galaxy Buds sounded good oh brother glad im past that stage in life... Been thinking about a Tube Amp and the HD600 as a secondary setup to round things off.

It falls a little beyond the parameters of this system, but I'll go there... Personally, I would create a system by stepping up a notch for each equipment piece here. So, that would mean pairing the DX7 Pro + with the Arya. It's certainly more money - no doubt. But, in the long run you'd end up saving - because I believe many, many an audiophile would eventually want to upgrade both equipment choices in this one, Josh. Well, at least I would.

Very happy to find this review - I've been looking at the Edition XS and was hoping you had reviewed it (since I generally find your reviews far more reliable than pretty much all other "audiophile" reviews). It's basically at the top of my price range - I was considering going for the Arya and in the end I just couldn't justify it, and I feel like some of the cheaper options wouldn't be a big enough upgrade over my current headphones to justify the expense, but this seems to fall into a sweet spot where it'd be a big upgrade at a not-insane price.

Amp/ dac wise will most likely be ifi zen dac V2, and maybe the zen signature hfm can but may just get the std zen dac. These setups will range between the 650 to around 900 price range but under a 1000 easily. Modius is outstanding for the price (especially the balanced out), but Magnius is kind of a piece of shit if I'm being honest. I think even the basic Magni is better. Magnius is definitely holding your chain back. If you have a 6XX, why are you even faffing about with solid state amps? They 6XX want tubes, so just buy Valhalla 2 and call it a day, because you definitely aren't coming anywhere close to beating or even matching it with the 6XX for the same cost. Downside is that Valhalla is SE only, and Modius' SE out is a solid step down from the balanced out. And I'd honestly just sell the HE560. They don't hold up against a properly-driven 6XX from a good source. Replace them with the HE400se and get the same type of sound and similar quality and have $100 left over.

@@alondite215- Thanks for your feedback. I'm still new to the field so learning what's good and what's better. I don't have any opportunity to test drive a lot of things nor the budget to cycle through a lot of gear, so I appreciate those who have been there to drive me in new directions.

I love my Edition XS so much and I bought the SMSL SH/U-6 to pair with it based on your videos. I do think it is better and worth the money over the Sundara which I had previously but they have some dealbreaking problems IMO. I had some bad static issues with them with multiple setups and overall the imaging for competitive gaming is garbage. Obviously competitive gaming isn't the focus for the Sundara at all, but the imaging on the XS is absolutely fantastic for competitive gaming even compared to my PC38X. Ultimately, its just nice that I don't have to switch headphones from listening to music to gaming like I did previously. The default frequency response is also leaps and bounds better as I feel it needs none or very slight EQ, maybe a small bass shelf, but that is it. The Sundara I felt improved significantly with EQ more than just a bass shelf. The Dekoni Elite Velour for the Arya/Ananda work much better than the stock pads for people who get squeaking while wearing glasses. The material that contacts the side of your head can rub on the arms of your glasses and sorta squeak. I haven't noticed a drastic difference in sound overall with the Dekoni pads, just better comfort.

Great input, thank you! I have the smsl HO200 amp and smsl with DO200 dac paired with a HD599SE headphone. And I want to improve my hifi and gaming headphone allot. Is the Edition XS that good, our should I go another route in your opinion?

My preference would be Hifiman Sundara + Sennheiser HD6xx + a Dac-Amp that would be for example like a Fiio BTR5 or BTR7 or Fiio Q3 or Xduoo XD-05 Basic or IFI Hip Dac Amp, which is close enough to this range. I personally would get more out of 2 different headphones, than with a headphone that is probably 10-15% better than the Sundara at best. Also, this system is one that you can build with just 1 headphone at a time so you also don't need to spend the whole amount in 1 go. This is the system I'm aiming for someday. Or any DAC & AMP that would still be useful on its own, even if you upgrade to a much better DAC and AMP like the Schiit Magnius Modius stack. I'm against buying the same thing twice, so I'd rather have a DAC AMP that is good enough rn, and will still be useful in situations when I have better equipment.

I thought the same thing till I realized the Magni/Modi was half the price of Magnius/Modius and produced more power out of the Magni single ended. It is like future proofing your system for no reason while also crippling your current gear. Doesn't really make sense. Either way, the Magni will absolutely drive the headsets you mentioned and the XS. I am only running a 1v DAC into my Magni and I still cannot even max the power and this thing goes pretty hard.

Hi, I don't have this exact setup but I DO have hifiman XS paired with their EF400 amp/dac. It's my only experience in "high end" hifi audio gear, because I come from basic "gamer" grade stuff But I must say it's the best deal for 1000$ range. It really puts everything to a whole new level. I know (coz i watched a lot of review) that there are cheaper stuff that perform similarly well like Mojo DAC/AMP. It's interesting though hearing '"spend more on your headphones vs the amp/dac" coz i've always heard "spend as much on headphones as you would on dac/amp". Again my experience is very little so i can't tell with relevant opinion, but in the future I would probably (if I can afford) go to 1000-3000$ headphones and see if there is any difference. However, I can (my opinion again) only encourage, if possible, to go to a dedicated shop, or return item if you can, just to try the headphones. Example is that many people praise the susvara (hifiman) or similar competitors product, and often say, 'well heh, I like it more for jazz or rock, but for electronics this one...etc". In the end it's more of a personal taste than a real "this one is better". Hope this is understandable.

I've been doing a tic-toc type of upgrades to my system. Upgrade headphones 1 year, then amp/dac the next. I followed your advice when first starting by spending most of my budget on headphones and a cheaper magni/modi stack. Now I just upgraded my stack to something that's worth almost twice what I paid for my headphones. So naturally the next thing to be upgraded is my headphones, but that might not be for another year or 2.

Although not going to meet $700, I started with D30 Pro and A30 Pro stack because I knew I would want to try a few different headphones and wanted plenty of head room. Essentially, I was future proofing. I always had SHP9500 for gaming, got sundaras around the same time as my stack, and the some Modhouse T50 Argons. The Argons LOVE the power. It's very comforting knowing that my stack will be able to handle 98% of what I will ever throw at it. And it's as you said, the fun is switching headphones, not dacs and amps. D30/A30pro is probably my one and done end game personally. Not TOO big (doesn't take up a lot of space on my desk) and lots of power. Much rather explore various sound signatures through different headphones.

Got a pair of Cowin E8 Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones new for $30.00 on Amazon under the guise name Qisebin E8. They sound great wireless because of the APTX codec. Amazon is giving them away. What a fantastic over ear Headphone for peanuts!

My current system was about $700. $300 for the Sennheiser HD660S and $400 for the Asgard 3 with built-in DAC. It's a great system to me and probably a bit warmer than the one in this video but that's the sound signature I like. Now the goal is to find adequate closed-back headphones but the ones I'm looking at (ZMF Atticus) cost more than this entire system! Open-back is the way to go if you want affordable audiophile sound.

Could you re-review the Edition XS? I find it interesting that quite a few reviewers LOVED the XS, but it's rarely talked about anymore. How does it compare to todays standards/market/etc? What does it lack, what is it still awesome in? Cheers from the Netherlands!

Most definitely the headphones and speakers should have the most of your investment. True to the T. XS: Fantastic headphones. My endgame (with the Focal Elex - also grabbed after Josh's recommendation back in 2019. Thanks Josh!).

Running the Sundara and the dx3 pro + and I definitely think it’s a good combo. Before this, I was tailored for more bass than this offers, so I think it is sort of lacking (to me). I sort of wish for my needs it had a bass switch like the Zen amps can offer.

I own an HD 660S and an iFi Zen Dac V2 and I'm completely fine with it. I also own a Topping DX 3 Pro+ that I've ordered for comparison and amazon didnt return so they decided to actually let me keep the Topping and just refund the money. Also tried out the DT 1990 Pro and it sounds awesome but I prefer the vocal tone of the HD 660S. In direct comparison I quite like the simplicity of the Zen Dac V2 with it's balanced output and Gain/Truebass buttons but the Topping also sounds great once I've tuned it to my preferences. Sadly I don't have a second hifi-headphone to make use of the Topping right now so it just sits on my desk without even being connected to my PC or Mac... I was going to buy a Hifiman Sundara to connect to the Topping but after watching this video I am probably gonna wait a little longer until the price of the XS goes down to like 400$ and buy it instead. Eitherway: you can get amazing sound at this pricepoint which seemed to be impossible just a couple of years ago. I love it!
