I'm always waiting for the parts where he shows off a little. What I love about those gems is how naturally he does it. Something to aspire for.

A new tip for scales I was discussing recently with a student playing a Scarlatti sonata...I hope it is helpful to you and/or your students who are having trouble with this!

Omg this is it. My left hand was always twisting and pulling my fingers when playing scales in Mozart Sonata 16. I realised all I had to do was move to the right a bit. I was sitting in the centre which didn't help. Once I moved right it felt lot more comfortable and my hands were straight. My speed didn't improve at all. But the sound was so even I was amazed.

Thank you so much for this video! I definitely struggle with this problem. I’m also finding a disconnect between my left and right hand at higher speeds: they don’t play quite in sync. I picked up Czerny’s School of Velocity again recently to try to work in this problem. 😂 I have picked up sooo many bad habits over the years that I’m trying to fix now as an adult and it’s hard. 😩

Thank you for this video. I've actually struggled with this exact piece and the exact spot you used as an example (and similar scale passages in this piece). I think I'll have revisit K. 239 and apply your tips :) Thanks!

It's the ossia cadenza from Rachmaninoff's 3rd piano concerto in D minor. It's near the end of the first movement.

Speaking of quicker releases, I'm having trouble with the turns (so-called Haydn ornament) in Haydn's C Major Sonata XVI:1. The piece starts on middle C and the turn is DCBC with the suggested fingering of 4321. I can't get the C to return back fast enough to then get a crisp C on the end of the turn (if that makes sense) consistently. I tried playing the first 3 notes lightly and it works most of the time. I even tried going up and down the keyboard. Any tips? Maybe just patience? Also, the alberti bass' have to be played super fast. The Derzhavina recording is mind boggling quick.

I appreciate you are suggesting the hand should be centered, but it was quite unclear exactly what you were prescribing for the fingers. It seemed you both recommended and condemned finger leading. It was clear that hand leading introduced problems.
