This 45-minute video lesson explores an in-depth look at La fille aux cheveux de lin (“The Girl With The Flaxen Hair”) from the first volume of Preludes by Claude Debussy. Areas of focus include tone quality, pedaling (and how to create silky, rounded pedal), improving touch and control over dynamics, creating color, balance between the melody and the accompaniment, melodic and harmonic shaping, observance of ties, interpretation, long lines, creating space and atmosphere within the lines, and impressionist stylistic elements to help you become as efficient as possible in your practice sessions.

Start by pronouncing "La" as "La", not as "Le"!

Wonderful video...as always😊👍👏 you mention the ''hair pin" symbol, I just watched the Seymour Bernstein interview on Tonebase last week in which he discusses this marking in great detail. Your tone is so beautiful and warm but it always has clarity at the same time...anyhow, bravo! Thank you!

Awesome tutorial, Josh! I’ve always wanted to learn how to play this piece. Never got around to it. I remember my teacher exposing me to the works of Debussy by teaching me how to play “Reverie” years ago. Looking forward to making time to learn this one next! Blessings to you and your family! 🎹🙏🏽✨

Thank you! If you search “Josh Wright Studio Tour 2021” I show how I place my mics. So far as the tuning, I have incredible piano technicians that keep that piano in top shape for these tutorials, so a huge thank you to them!

Dear Josh, I am a pianist and have developed focal hand dystonia. I have had it for 3 three years now and have 2 piano teachers working with me and I am not getting better. I recently discovered the Taubman method. I am thinking about stopping piano lessons with my 2 teachers and also stopping 2 other classes I am taking to be able to afford to take the trip to NYC biweekly to study at the Golandsky institute. Before I take this huge step I was wondering what your thoughts are on this method. (And if it is good to heal my dystonia) I see on their website a girl who had my same problem worked with Edna Golandsky and is now better.

Josh, great video as always. I have a question. Why are you pedaling the first line in the piece before any of the other voices come in? Ive always played the opening voice without pedal and as legato as possible.

Nice, I was learning this one a while ago but never was really satisfied with the outcome - I'm sure this will help. Any chance for you to do a piece or two from Albeniz' Suite Espagnole? 🙂

Debussy is great because when you listen to his tempos from old recordings you realize there is no tempo for Debussy and it is a bit of a catharsis....
