Some Germans say "or" and not "isn't it" at the end of yes-no-question. For example: Is it easy, isn't it? Germans would say: Is it easy, or?

That is because of literal translation; in German you would use the word "oder" at the end of such questions, which also means "or". Those who do that wrong either never learned about that or are out of practice.

I am also Mexican and I was living in Austria learning German, after being there I am very confused about words in English and in German, haha I noticed that thing about “or”, and now once in awhile I also make that mistake, the same thing happens to me regards the verb “made” or with the pronunciation of certain words. "That problem" sería lo más correcto en ese caso. On the discussion of million, billion, trillion: Janik pointed out that a billion in English isn't the same as a billion in German. It's important to note that the same thing occurs in Spanish. In English, German, Spanish, and others, a million (un millón) describes the number 1,000,000. That is, a one with six zeroes following it. Put another way, it is one thousand times one thousand. In English, a billion describes the number 1,000,000,000. That is, a one with nine zeroes following it. Or one million times one thousand. This is distinct from German and Spanish, which use the terms "milliarde" and "mil millones" respectively to describe that number. Then, in English we use trillion to describe what would be "billón" in Spanish. This difference exists because of long vs short scales in the naming system of numbers. In English, we use short scale, which is based on multiples of a thousand. So each term greater than a million is a thousand times the previous term. A million times a thousand is a billion, a billion times a thousand is a trillion, a trillion times a thousand is a quadrillion, etc. In long scale, each "-illion" named term is a million times larger than the previous. Luxury Adr this is very common among L2 speakers. I am a native English speaker but my wife spoke L2 English (she was from Greece). She studied English as a second language after moving here as an adult to improve her accent and as a result had many friends who also spoke L2 English and for whom English was their only language in common with my wife. I would hear my wife on the phone with one of them and always knew whom she was speaking with because she made different mistakes with each - mistakes by the way that she never made when speaking to me. It was as if each pair had their own “mutualect” that became the agreed upon way for them to communicate. Even though their speech was rife with errors it worked quite well for them and she remained friends with them throughout her life.

Hi! As an American who's lived in South America and Europe, I *really* enjoyed this video -- it brought back some fun memories! (Yes, miscommunication *can* be fun. So there.) Some of the problems you mention seem to be pretty much universal, since English has such a mish-mash of odd rules & a logic all its own. (Now that I've said that, I realize that one can say that about most languages. Oh, well...) There were a few individual points in your video that made me go, "Hey!" so here they are.... 1) Where I come from, when someone says "beamer" -- usually spelled "Beemer" -- and it's a slang name for a BMW sports car. 2) Handy actually *is* a real word -- it's an adjective describing something or someone useful/helpful (which is why you can look in the phone directory for a "handyman" to do odd jobs for you). 3) I've heard a lot of non-native English speakers say "informations" (not just Europeans) and I can't quite figure out why! 4) You had a lot of fun with each other over pronunciation, but a little before that I noticed you were both saying, "Chef" with a "CH" sound... while most English speakers (at least in the US) will actually pronounce it more like the French "sheff." :-) 5) I long ago gave up on trying to accurately express large numbers verbally to anyone outside the Americas; the numbering system seems to have taken a hard left turn somewhere in the mid-Atlantic. It's easier to just say how many digits there are to the left of the decimal point... and then hope that no one gets into an argument over who uses commas and periods the "right" way or "wrong" way in large numbers... 6) You should both feel very proud over how multilingual you are, and how *good* you both are with multiple languages. :-) PS - I followed a "teach yourself" course in German when I lived in Belgium in the 1980s, and in the 1990s attended a series of actual classes in German... and I think I have maybe a 15 word vocabulary (most of it badly pronounced). Please take anything I said above that sounded like criticism with a very large grain of salt!

I’m happy that multiple languages and accents and differences and customs are more readily accepted as we all “mingle more globally”- compared to yesteryear. I love how you notice someone’s accent considerably at first- maybe you even struggle with understanding the person - but it dissipates remarkably fast as you get to know them, listen to them, and interact on a regular basis. I'm a West Coast American, and my wife is an Italian that was born in Argentina - so she has a Castillian Spanish accent, a very proper Italian accent since she learned to speak in school in Italy as a young girl after they moved, and then a thick Italian accent in English (we live in the US now). She doesn't like her Italian accent in English, but everyone thinks her accent is very pretty because it is - it's just a fact. You guys are cute, and these videos remind me a lot of the funny things my wife and I went through as she learned English in America, and I (sort of) learned Italian. Neither of us spoke a common language well when we started dating.

I was in a German hospital for 4 days and when I woke up from the operation, the nurse said: you're currently in a waking room. In a few minutes, we are taking you to the station. I replied in German: Ich gehe nicht zum Bahnhof. That is, I'm not going to the train station. Station in their terminology meant a department where patients of a particular health issue are hospitalised. Other mistakes I can think of: the use of word "ne" for isn't it, e.g. but that was written by James, ne? Another mistake I often see is the use of preposition from instead of of. For example, the bus from university instead of the bus of university. In German that would be der bus von Universität. The last one I can now think of is the use of please (in German Bitte) for you're welcome. A friend of mine said please in the end of a conversation and we laughed so hard. I love their accent, it's really cute! And, as I've started speaking German more and more, it's so challenging to say the word cool in a German accent where I've been saying it all my life in a proper English one.

You both speak English really well btw :) Also the This and That thing is something he struggles with too. He knows that this is for close objects and that is for distant objects, but that is not the only way we use those words and it is actually kinda hard to explain to non-native speakers lol. And sometimes it doesnt even matter which one you use.

As a native English speaker who knows a bit of German, I can tell you that we do say "make a break" in English, but it doesn't mean the same as "eine Pause machen". Make a break means to run away, or run away from something! You're right in saying that "eine Pause machen" is "take a break". Another thing is, the word "Beamer" does exist in English! It doesn't mean a projector, but it's a slang term for a BMW.

You can hear the german accent mostly when they say “with”. In the beginning I really needed to concentrate myself to pronounce the “th” right.

When I lived in Germany (I'm from Denmark and lived in DE for a year), I didn't focus much on my accent, but because I only was surrounded with germans I quickly learned it. Even though I'm now studying to be an English and a german teacher I don't think much about my accent. There's somany different accents of both german and english in the world. :) Thank you for all the super videos. Sag mal bescheid wenn ihr irgendwann in Dänemark seid. :D

Interestingly, you'll sometimes hear "make yourself ready" in the midwest United States. It's probably a remnant of an older expression. E.g., "to make ready," as in "Make ready for battle!" or similar. It sounds a bit archaic. There's quite a few left-over, vestigial pieces of English floating around, such as the word "gotten," which is really only used in parts of the USA, but was once used more broadly. "What have you got?" (US English = "have", UK English = "have" or "received") vs. "What have you gotten?" (US English = "received", same as "What did you get?")

The word Beamer exists in English, but it has another meaning. Many english speaking people call the car brand which we call 'BMW' in German 'Beamer'

Makes more sense than "vacuum". The real name for it in English is "vacuum cleaner". A "vacuum" is an empty volume. So when people call a vacuum cleaner just "vacuum", it proves that they're kinda silly.

Beamer is an English word, it isn't used anymore because it was what an old video projector was called, like the ones which make that cute krrrrr sound when starting. I guess it's a British term for the video projector. So, it's not a mistake. Although Handy doesn't make any sense, some say it is called a Handy because it is Handy to use, but that makes even less sense because then it should be called Praktisch or Handlich in German.

I sort of know how to speak english (self taught with a lot of help from the internet) i mean i can write it but when it comes to speak in english i get so scared, basically because i'm afraid of making mistakes and because of the accent i'll have. You two are too cool! I am trying to learn Spanish, so I understand the challenges with learning a new language. Here are some observations for you: You can actually say, ' I will go make myself ready', but it sounds snobbish(posh), so people don't say it. In North America, beamer is short for BMW, as in, 'i drove my beamer to work today'. Keep up the great work, and all the best from Canada!!
