No one had a lower base range then the great. J.D. Sumner. My grandmother introduced me to J.D.s music in 1964 when I was just 13 years old.l was in awe of him . One evening at an “ all night sing” in Kitchener Ontario. During the break I purchased a record directly from JD. My hand was shaking so badly I could hardly hand over the 5 dollar bill. RIP JD . I’m looking forward to catching up with you on the other side.

If the world wants to know why we so look forward to Heaven. It's because of the LOVE. Not any that we can conjure up. It is simply His love coming out thru his people. Sometimes when you see something like this, the yearning for that love, it makes me homesick. The final song Is my testimony. As I am much nearer to the end now, It is He that has never deserted me, I have to say that at times I have strayed away, but He has always wooed me back. How great is His love.

I’ve got so many memories of JD one that comes to mind me and my brother started the cavaliers quartet in 93 Our first year to go to the NQC me and my wife and daughter went early and I had no clue what I was doing I got out with a table and suitcase full of our tapes and dressed for the night it was 9:00 that morning heading down to our booth I looked up and in a golf cart was JD and George I moved over to let them by and right beside me JD said hey George look a rookie both of them was chuckling they stoped and said you look like you need some help so here we go table on top and me standing on the back holding our taped made it to the booth and ask me if there’s any think else I said my wife and 2 year old daughter no hesitation JD jumped in the golf cart leaving me and George behind came back with my wife and kid he went past us and showing them around with my daughter in his lap after making a few laps around the place he was hungry and me and George had to walk to the food court But JD bought out dinner and we had the best time 3 months before he passed away we got to share the stage with jd and our bass singer at the time said Wayne I pray we could find us a piano player like Jerry Kelso well 10 years later Jerry came into our lives and played for us for 4 years until he got sick and couldn’t continue but we still talk and he try’s to help out I could keep on and on really i need to write a book with our years being on the road great memories

I always thought the Big Chief was the best bass singer in SG history, especially rhythmically, but JD was indisputably the lowest. He also had an incredible range and his upper register is often overlooked, but often displayed with the Masters Five harmonies. But, moreover, along with Jake Hess, JD was a superstar whose influence extended beyond SGM. As for The Stamps, my favorite lineup amongst the many, many, many of the Stamps, was with JD, Ed Hill, Jack Toney and Jerry Trammell. I loved the blend of that lineup. I did not care for Jim Hill on tenor because, although I thought Jim was a brilliant lead singer, most especially with the Statesmen, he was miscast in the tenor role. I also never cared for Ed Enoch. I enjoyed Steve Warren singing tenor with the group. Rick Strickland is an acquired taste. It was a great time in SG when Jake and the Imperials, JD and The Stamps, The Blackwood Brothers and the Statesman would all appear together in concert.
