JERUSALEM, Israel - Accuracy in reporting is the gold standard we're all taught in journalism school, yet in these days of politicized information, that can go out the window.
It is especially true in the Middle East, where members of the media at times have been actual participants in the Gaza ground war.
We recently interviewed Tricia Miller, director of partnerships of Christians and Jews for CAMERA, (Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis).

Because the values of the average Israeli seem to be similar to my own values, I tend to be more sympathetic with Israelis than with supporters of Hamas. There are two considerations, however, that the CBN editorial staff seem to be ignoring: 1: The history of theology as it has influenced attitudes of Europeans (and people of European extraction) toward Hebrews. 2: The history of theology as it pertains to interpreting the prophecies of the Bible. The followers of Jesus are called to be peacemakers. That becomes nearly impossible for a person who A: Subscribes to the doctrine that all Hebrews - even those born after the crucifixion of Jesus - are guilty of deicide (killing God) or who B: Subscribes to the doctrine that the modern political nation of Israel is the Israel of Bible prophecy and that, therefore, followers of Jesus should never question or oppose the policies of the Israeli government. Doctrine A above was promoted in Europe for more than a thousand years. Its hatred of Hebrews was borrowed from the pagans in Rome but was also based on the doctrine that the institutional church had REPLACED Israel as the object of the Lord’s supreme regard. It was not a biblical doctrine during the dark ages and it was not a biblical doctrine when protestant reformers taught it in the sixteenth century. That doesn’t mean, however, that the historicist METHOD of interpreting Bible prophecies used by the sixteenth century reformers was wrong. That method was to compare the prophecies with historical events so as to better understand how some prophecies had already been fulfilled and thus to better understand how some prophecies could be expected to be fulfilled in the future or even in the sixteenth century. Many of the restoration prophecies, for example, had been fulfilled after the Babylonian captivity in the sixth century B.C. and the reformers understood the seventy weeks of the prophecy of Daniel 9 to have ended in the first century A.D. In the seventeenth century, puritans in New England fancied themselves latter-day Israelites but the puritans penalized ANYONE who disagreed with their interpretation of the Bible, including the few Hebrews who settled in New England in the seventeenth century. In New England in the eighteenth century, Jonathan Edwards promoted the doctrine (known as post-millennialism) that, over a period of a thousand years of peace and increasing prosperity, all or nearly all of the civil government and other institutions on Earth would adopt Christian principles and that Jesus would return after that thousand years. Edwards postmillennialism remained the dominant eschatology in the United States during the entire nineteenth century. In the United States in the nineteenth century, however, some people developed an historicist version of pre-millennialism very different from the dispensationalist/futurist pre-millennialism popular among conservatives in the United States in the twenty-first century. At one point in the nineteenth century, scores of methodist and dozens of baptist ministers promoted an historicist version of premillennialism. The mainline methodists of the twenty-first century, however, are more-or-less post-millennialists. In Ireland in the nineteenth century, John Darby studied the writings of Francisco de Ribera who had introduced the futurist method of prophecy interpretation during the Council of Trent in the sixteenth century. Using the futurist method, Darby developed a version of pre-millennialism based partly on the futurist method and partly on the premise that the church had replaced Israel but only temporarily, i.e that all of the prophecies about ancient Israel and all of the promises to Israel will be fulfilled in the future. I was born during WWII. Repeatedly when I was a child, my dad advised me, “Read for yourself, study for yourself and think for yourself. Instead of adopting the traditions of Judaism or the traditions that developed in Europe over the first few hundred years after Jesus ascended to heaven, I suggest working from the premise that the faith of Jesus is the true continuation of the faith of the Hebrew patriarchs. Study why the protestant reformers believed some of the prophecies had already been fulfilled. Study why the seventeenth century puritans in New England thought of themselves as latter-day Israelites. Then see whether there is a way to interpret the prophecies of the Bible without adopting Doctrine A: that all Hebrews - even those born after the crucifixion of Jesus - are guilty of deicide (killing God) and also without adopting Doctrine B: that the modern political nation of Israel is the Israel of Bible prophecy and that, therefore, followers of Jesus should never question or oppose the policies of the Israeli government.
