Am I the only one who thinks it's REALLY weird that Margaret Hamilton, the woman who played the Wicked Witch of the West in the original Wizard of Oz film, is playing Aunt Em in this film?!
@Inkyminkyzizwoz10 жыл бұрын
Except the film she was in wasn't the first Oz film to be made - there were several silent films before it - so you shouldn't really call it the 'original'!
@chriswestergaard450610 жыл бұрын
Inkyminkyzizwoz That's true. I actually just found that out recently

***** Yes, it was the first Oz film to be made that had sound and colour, but that still doesn't make it right to call it the 'original'!

***** But it wasn't the first film adaptation of it to be made!

Chris Westergaard Not at all; it's cool when actors from previous incarnations of things come back to play different characters; for instance, Noel Neill, Phyllis Coates, and Teri Hatcher have all played both Lois Lane and her mother Ellen.

This was a "Troubled production" that took about 10 years to complete. Initiated by Fred "Astro Boy" Ladd, the soundtrack was recorded around 1963, but Ladd couldn't make a deal with an animation studio until the early 70s. LIza was only in her teens when she recorded this!
@JohnnyGNV5 жыл бұрын
You can tell it's an earlier Liza Minnelli recording because her voice took on a deeper tone by the 70's and this sounds more like the Liza who occasionally sang on the Judy Garland Show.
@Sydyoon094 ай бұрын
If she did this in the 70s Dorothy would’ve sounded much more different here

This is done so well compared to the return to oz (by changing actress and not making the movie as dark.. however I did enjoy return to oz, this Dorothy is very similar to Judy Garland in the original, both with her voice and portrayal, this is exactly what might have happened if Garland did a sequel to the original movie.

I used to see this in the spring the locol tv station aired.Back then I would want to go oz with dorothy.That is until the tornado showed up.Then I never mind I will take a cab or amtrak. Tornado can be very bad to ones health.
@Inkyminkyzizwoz11 жыл бұрын
They started making it in 1962, but the production was halted for some years due to financial troubles. It was copyrighted in 1971, released in 1972 in the UK and 1974 in the US, so Judy Garland would've still been alive when they started making it, but not by the time it was finished!

Yup. It's a piece called "The Awakening" by James Pearson, which ITN was already using as it's News at Ten theme when this was made. Such are the risks of delving into the Stock Music libraries. I've seen a couple of horror films unfortunate enough to have picked out the same stock music as the Monty Python movies
@sallyb16899 жыл бұрын
It's weird for us Brits to hear "The News At Ten" theme music in the opening credits sequence WITHOUT the hour chimes of Big Ben at the end :-D

Sophie A I remember Ronnie Barker doing a spoof of "News at Ten" in which he started to speak right after the music, but the chimes cut him off and he looked off camera with an annoyed expression. :-)

I remember seeing this in 1980 on 'The SFM Holiday Network'. My Mother even sent for the sou dtrack album for me, offered during the commercial brealks, free for five labels from Texize products (which we already had in our apartment). The production is magical and the songs are phenomenal.

This was Filmation Associates' very 1st full length animated movie in the late 60s and early 70s,when it was being produced,during the studio's Saturday morning productions,and was released by Warner Bros. in late 1974,with Liza Minnelli as the voice of Dorothy,whose famous mother Judy Garland once played,in MGM's popular version! in November 1976,ABC-TV first aired this movie,which was hosted by Bill Cosby,who was still at Filmation,doing "FAT ALBERT" for CBS-it wasn't a bad version,,but Filmation's version,was still no match for Rankin/Bass-Videocraft International's 1964 cel animated special,"RETURN TO OZ" which NBC originally aired that year-it was actually,the better version,although the Filmation version stayed true to it's higher animation values,as well as Liza Minnelli's great singing,or even the voice of Margret Hamilton,the original "wicked witch of the west",who was voiced by Ethel Merman in the cartoon-still an enjoyable cartoon!
@joehill96719 жыл бұрын
This was Filmation Associates 1st animated full length film,which was in production throughout the late 60s and 70s-Warner Bros. released the movie in Nov 1974,and was later aired by ABC-TV in Nov 1976,and eventually syndicated in the late 70s and 80s,as part of "The SFM Holiday Network Special". Filmation Associates later did "FLASH GORDON:The Greatest Adventure Of Them All" (1978) "PINOCCHIO AND THE EMPEROR OF NIGHT" (1987) "The LEGEND OF BRAVESTARR" (1987-never released in the US,until the DVD came out in 2009) and their very last full length animated film,"SNOW WHITE AND THE LAND OF DOOM" aka "HAPPILY EVER AFTER",which was theatrically released by First National in 1993.and released on VHS tape by Worldvision Enterprises later the same year!

Apparently, on the day Judy Garland died there really was a tornado in Kansas!
@Inkyminkyzizwoz11 жыл бұрын
That's the one - it didn't receive a particularly good crit when it first came out (possible because it is quite a bit scarier than The Wizard of Oz), but it did gradually grow in popularity. The girl who played Dorothy in that one (Fairuza Balk) was 11 at the time, so probably a lot closer to the age Dorothy was originally supposed to be!
@MaskedMan666 жыл бұрын
Actually, she was nine. Dorothy may have been as young as six in her first Oz adventure; certainly no older than ten.
@Bobsheaux11 жыл бұрын
Huh... Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland dated for a while, now Rooney is playing the Scarecrow (who kinda-sorta had a romantic subplot with Dorothy) opposite Judy Garland's daughter... Anyone else creeped out here? lol
@MaskedMan666 жыл бұрын
No, he didn't have a romantic subplot with Dorothy.
@ilovefatguys125 жыл бұрын
MaskedMan66 Actually, in the MGM version, it was going to be planned for Dorothy and the Scarecrow to have some sort of romance, but the idea was taken out of the movie. That’s why when Dorothy says to the Scarecrow that she’ll “miss him the most of all” during the end.
@mommymeow325 жыл бұрын
@@ilovefatguys12 Yeah, and there was going to be a scene at the end where Hunk promised to write to Dorothy since he was going to college. I'm glad they dropped that since Dorothy is supposed to be only about 12. It would have been kind of disturbing.

Are you talking about "Return to Oz" being a better film than this one? "Return to Oz" is my personal favorite OZ film. Movies today are just not the same as they used to be. Always flooded with CGI and all that useless crap. I didn't even bother seeing the new one that just came out.

Hi! First off let me apologize on the fact that my last respond's does come across as though I'm attacking CGI. I have no beef with CGI. I took up Computer Animation. My issue isn't about CGI being used. It's about how overly abused CGI is being used in movies. I blame it on Lucas. The art of film-making started going on a slow, but obvious decline ever since Star Wars episode 1 came out. CGI is VERY useful, WHEN used PROPERLY. Does this make better sense to you now? :)

I don't understand why some people ridicule CGI so much. You can do a lot more with it! The one criticism I might have of The Wizard of Oz is that the scenery in it does look very artificial, whereas these days with CGI you can make it more convincing.

Peter Heimsoth it was when the scarecrow was being blown around in the wind. I have heard that same sound used in other cartoons. it has been used in "the jetsons" and flintstones cartoons and it has also been used in ducktales cartoons and scooby doo cartoons and it was also used in the "captain planet" episode "who gives a hoot". I have known that sound ever since I was a kid and I still don't know how it was made
