This was the sequel to a cartoon series called _Tales of the Wizard of Oz,_ and the character design was simpler than in this movie, but everyone is still recognizable. I also love Dorothy's gumption and positive attitude.

I've seen it, too. It was made by Rankin/Bass Productions after "The Tales of the Wizard Oz" (1961) TV Series in 1964. I still have a DVD with an original broadcast in living color NBC and original sound recording with sound effects and music. Even I remembered some Canadian actors in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964): Larry D. Mann, voice Yukon Cornelius (1922-2014) (Rusty (Tin Man) / Wicked Witch of the West), Alfie Scopp, voice of Fireball and Charlie in the Box (1919-2021) (Sociates (Scarecrow)), Carl Banas, voice of Head of the Elves (1929) (The Wizard / Dandy (The Cowardly Lion)) replaced Paul Kligman, voice of Donner and Coach Comet. Only in Return to Oz (1964) Cast: Peggy Loder (Glinda, the Good Witch of the North) (1926-2005) (Glinda the Good Witch), Susan Morse (1951-2018) (Singing voice of Dorothy), introducing Susan Conway (1952) (Dorothy).

I watched a video from Quinton Reviews about the Rankin-Bass Cinematic Universe. I learned that Videocraft International, the production company behind such classics like Return To Oz (1964) would go on to make stop-motion Christmas/Holiday specials under the name "Rankin-Bass Productions" many years later. At 3:38, I can't help but be reminded of Rudolph when the group starts to sing. Not sure if I'm the only one, but it reminds me of, songs like "There's Always Tomorrow", or "The Island of Misfit Toys", or any other song in Rudolph.

This is one of the Early Rankin/Bass Specials I think before their Rodolph Special make them household names in TV special animation mostly their Christmas ones. My other faves from them are Mad Monster Party, The Daydreamer, and rarely enough The Wacky world of Mother Goose. I do hope for a CD set of all of their soundtracks with a song from these specials and movies. They really do bring the childhood feeling of watching these timeless specials despite their cheap and bad quality in them sometimes. Also, Return to Oz movie from the 80s is a far better movie than the one from the 60s due to better writing and scary sense. Still, Rankin Bass stuff is nice to see.

Except that it isn't; in the series from which this movie sprang, the Scarecrow was named Socrates, the Tin Woodman Rusty, and the Lion Dandy, and they had already teamed up to visit the Wizard and petition him for the things they wanted before Dorothy and Toto ever showed up. And when they did show up, they didn't come in a house, they fell through a dimensional doorway and landed on Dandy. Also, the Wizard was not from Omaha, but was in fact a native-born Ozite.

This film is a follow up to a previous Rankin-Bass production, an Oz TV series, "Tales of the Wizard of Oz". It was produced shortly after the copyrights to L. Actually, two young performers gave Dorothy voice, and they were both named Susan. Susan Conway was the speaking voice, she is 70 years old now, and I can turn up little biographical data on her, except that she's done a lot of voice work. Susan Morse, whom I had the pleasure of interviewing (via e-mail) some years back, did the singing. Sadly, she passed away at the age of 67, and she and her husband never had any children.

It should be mentioned that this Special aired only twice. Honestly, it is not really very good. It was an attempt at upgrading the syndicated TALES FROM THE WIZARD OF OZ from Videocraft. The animation is mediocre and uneven in quality. There are story construction problems, as well as bad, confused, and inconsistent direction in many of the scenes. First of all, The Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion were appointed as the rulers of Oz when the Wizard left in his balloon. But the balloon drifted off, taking him away. So how did he get back to Oz in his previous position? What happened to the force field around the slippers? That seduction sequence between the Witch in disguise and the Wizard is awful and does nothing to advance the story. But most of all, the songs are not well integrated and just shoe-horned in for their own sake. It's no wonder that NBC never ran it after its second broadcast in 1965. It did not become the classic that RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSE REINDEER or FROSTY THE SNOW MAN became.

You're mixing this up with the MGM movie, with which it has no connection. This version of the Wizard was not from the United States, but was born and raised in Oz, where he went to a magic academy to learn to become a wizard. He never left Socrates, Rusty, and Dandy in charge of Oz, because he never left Oz. The "force field" is exclusive to the MGM movie; in the original book, the Wicked Witch was not only able to touch the shoes, but she even managed to secure one and put it on. What you call a "seduction sequence" did in fact further the story because that allowed Wicked West to mislead Dorothy and the boys.

I was obsessed with this when I was a child. The local video (VHS) rental store had a copy of this in the mid 90s (roughly 1995) and I’d force my mother to rent it over and over. Finally we taped it because it was costing us too much money. I lost the VHS tape years ago and it’s surreal to see it again. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Some people (mainly one troll) in the comment section don't get this special. Personally, I love anything Rankin/Bass, especially their animated things. The music is lovely, the singers are pretty decent, and the visuals are so very 60s that to me it's hard not to like at least a little bit. But if you don't, that's fine, but please respect other peoples' opinions. Thank you, have a good day.

I was 11 when this first aired and wanted to like it since I was crazy about anything animated. And I was inspired to be an Animator by seeing a number of television productions like this. While there are some "nice" things about this Special, it was obviously cheaply produced with minimal animation. It was a nice improvement over the syndicated TALES OF THE WIZARD OF OZ series, but the writing is not a good as it was in the short cartoons.

Correct: Susan Conway did Dorothy's dialogue while Susan Morse did her singing.
