If you watch the utube video of Steve sing Still They Ride in Japan concert vs Philadelphia, both were just off the charts excellent but the one in Japan he was really into it and his voice just soared. Favorite band ,Journey. Favorite singer? Steve Perry ! I know you wrote your comment years ago, did you know he was just voted best rock vocalist ever by a huge margin ? Yeah, it's surprising (or maybe not) how many musicians respected Journey, especially Schon. Back in the day, you could find quite a few hard rock/metal players giving props, even if it wasn't their cup of tea. Maybe it wasn't generally perceived that way.. and certainly not like today where everyone knows everyone else's opinions 24/7. But it was out there.

Taking nothing away from any of the other "arena rock" bands from this era that had major success (eg REO, Styx, et al) but this is an ALBUM CUT for crying out loud. This was their idea of a "filler track" on the Escape project and it packs a major WALLOP! First rate playing, solid writing and and awesome recording. Thanks for posting this!

Two songs from Infinity, one from Evolution, three from Departure and Eight from Escape. Only songs missing from Escape were Still They Ride and Lay it Down both of which they played live. At this date the group was peaking because they could still take their time and choose and/or play extended versions. By the time Frontiers tour came around, they started to rush songs to get in all their hits. Then in 86 on Raised on Radio tour, the shows were a sprint to get in all the songs plus Oh Sherrie and Strung Out from Perry's solo album. I still consider Departure tour Journey (1980) to be the best version of the band.

Steve Perry-era Journey is the best ever! Their song catalog is so diverse. Perry's voice is one of the rarest voices in rock - a Godsend. Schon's rocking guitar riffs, Cains' amazing keyboard, Valory's bass lines, Smith's drums! I also loved Dunbar on drums and Greg Rolie's voice in combination with Perry's. The writing team of Perry-Cain-Schon was unmatched. They all work together for perfection. Although we love listening to many of the other bands that are (so far) rated higher on this list, how many of them do we like to sing along to? Journey just inspires you to sing along. You get into the emotions in the song, sing along, and feel like it's your own mantra. I never get tired of their music. I love them because their lyrics are inspiring or sentimental at times, and other times they are suggestive without being nasty or vulgar. I love that... and I love Journey!

I totally agree with your comment. I have been a journey fan since 1978 when I first saw them on the midnight special show as a 15 yr old sneaking to stay up and watch the show. Steve Perry mesmerized me with his voice the first time and I was hooked. what a voice!! Steve is still handsome to this day.
