The 63 km long Bilimora-Waghai track was laid by the British in 1913 at the instigation of Sayajirao Gaekwad. It was a part of the Gaekwad's Baroda State Railways, a railway line owned by the princely state of Baroda, which was ruled by the Gaekwad dynasty. Their main objective was to maintain their relationship with the royal state. The Gaekwad rulers also used this train to transport precious teak wood from the forests. After India's independence, Gaekwad's Baroda State Railways merged and became part of the Western Railways.
