Personnel:
Gregg Rolie - vocals, keyboards
Neal Schon - guitars, vocals
Ross Valory - bass, vocals
Aynsley Dunbar - drums
George Tickner - guitar
Summary:
This is among the earliest known professional recordings of Journey, from long before it ascended to the top of the AOR radio charts with a long string of FM hits. The group had formed eight months earlier when young guitar superstar Neal Schon decided to form his own group after departing Santana in 1972. He eventually convinced singer/keyboardist Gregg Rolie to follow suit, making Journey the Bay Area's first handpicked supergroup. Also on board were bassist Ross Valory (best known for his role in the artsy psychedelic band Frumious Bandersnatch) and drummer extraordinaire Aynsley Dunbar, who had spent the previous few years working with Frank Zappa and David Bowie (during the Diamond Dogs period). Dunbar was a new addition, since the band's original drummer, Prairie Prince, had left to form a new group-The Tubes.
Although the band (whose name was picked as the result of a listener contest on KSAN-FM) would spring into its most lucrative popularity after the fourth album, Infinity, was made with new vocalist Steven Perry in 1978, this recording shows a musical group searching to find its place in the burgeoning rock marketplace.
The material here appeared on the band's debut Columbia Records album, and appears to be more of a marriage of progressive rock and jazz fusion than the pop-driven hard rock format that it would later embrace with Perry.
The Journey heard here was more about musical acrobatics and frantic solos than it is about melodies and well constructed rhythms. That skill would come later, after Perry joined, Tickner departed, and Dunbar, who had bolted to join Jefferson Starship, was replaced by Steve Smith.
The hit making version of the band would remain together until 1987. Today, Schon and Valory remain in a version of the band that has virtually no musical connection to the band recorded for this show.

I first heard this song on Time boxed Cd set that came out in the 1990s. Like most Journey fans I became familiar with the band through the Steve Perry era. Still, I was blown away when I first heard this song.

I’m actually embarrassed as huge fan of music and of all things awesome I never realized how good early journey was prior to Steve Perry I knew certain things Antidotal things at the the beginning they were at their best I can’t say this about too many bands but I’m speechless they were absolutely incredible I honestly wish they would’ve went on this way they could’ve brought Steve Perry on and still carry-on with this yes they made Classics with him but I just got a feeling that whatever Neil Schoen was became better after being with Santana in my opinion it made him greater and in my opinion they should’ve never changed their direction they were on the precipice of something better than anything in music I honestly believe that Rollie Had a melodic perfect voice for that music and honestly they could’ve taken on Steve Perry and capitalized on that for a long period of time believe they did that for one maybe two albums But they couldn’t burn on the level of living Led Zeppelin oh beyond I absolutely love love love this music and I wonder if there’s a live performance is on CD some sort of compilation it’s so good dammit

Before the ballad boy that band aspired to real muscular instrumental oriented music like this. And like my favorite, the Look Into The Future title track with all that fabulous soloing by Neal. It looked like they were going to carry that late-60s early-70s concert oriented music forward into its next evolution, which would have been great, but they took the Perry off-ramp and ran smack into a pile of money. Aah, whattaya gonna do?

These awesome displays of musicianship from early Journey never fails to bring out the Perry haters. Well this version of Journey would never have been known to most people if it hadn't been for the "ballad boy". They were damn lucky to get him.

This is the band I saw several times back then, before anyone ever heard of Perry. There would be no Steve Perry had it not been for this lineup. Just about everyone in the Bay Area wasn’t happy with the direction he took them - I know I wasn’t.

@@BiggeDiehl I feel that if Robert Fleischman had remain their lead singer they would have been more of a straight up rock and roll band. They wouldn't have become too pop oriented and we would not have had Raised on Radio.

Every one of the first three albums made the top 100, and each successive album charted about ten or fifteen spots higher...they were on the verge of going big without him...the record company and manager ruined it. Great music is not always about how many records you sell. They did get rich...most of them..if they "needed" a front man, I wish Sammy Hagar would have joined, not Perry...they would have been just as big, but much harder edge. The HSAS album with Schon and Hagar was kick ass.

@@chrisb8655 well I don't believe he's a troll because I am a troll and it takes one to know one however I do believe he's just a little ignorant on early Journey. After all he does compliment Ansley Dunbar and a troll would never do that we would totally destroy anyone's opinion. Also obviously he knows about music because he brought up mahavishnu Orchestra who early Journey did sound like. No my friend the true troll would have totally destroyed the other person's opinion adding laughs and obnoxious phrases. Trust me on this because I'm the troll that even destroys other trolls. Hahaha other trolls Boogie the hell away from me fast and very rarely come back for more. A true troll wants to humiliate you so they can laugh at you and it gives a sense of power. A true troll is enamored with their own command of the English language and their ability to insult you with catchy digs insulting and vulgar language. However we can be serious about something like music and as long as you don't disagree or insult us you'll be okay. Just a little lesson because you tried to help me. Thank you
