I'm so very happy that you're getting into Journey's embryonic days. The first 3 albums are what Journey meant to be - jazz & rock pioneers. Greg Rollie was Santana's keys player until he joined this version of Journey. This is off their first album.

Just a brilliant album. I know you really appreciated & loved Aynsley Dunbar on those drums. Those Journey fans who never listened to the first few albums have really denied themselves a piece of music history. 🔥❤️

Anyone who's a fan of the pussy-rock Journey era of Steve Perry will probably hate the first 3 albums.

Their first album is their best! Every track is fantastic. My teacher used to play this album during my junior year art class. Ah the memories!

No this is not a concept album , this was Journey in all its instrumental glory, free of pop hinderances. You indeed need to do the entire album and the next two after that to see exactly what these musicians were capable of.

One of the great debut albums of all time, in my opinion. I don't begrudge them making a ton of money by changing their sound later, but THIS is some real music.
@toddstevens132 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree, it was so superior to anything else new coming out at that time. If only their record label had not screwed them over so badly with terrible backing, there may have never had to be a LA LA, NA NA takeover.

It's pronounced 'ka - hoo - tek'. The instrumental is structured to have the slow, melodic intro to coincide with the comet's approach, then the chaotic middle as it passes by Earth, then back to the slow, melodic outtro as the comet fades into the distance. At least that's how I interpret it. Do more on this album - every song is worth it! "Of a Lifetime" is my all-time favorite.

When Journey was just starting out in 1973, finding "gigs" was not easy for a new San Francisco based band. In the Fall of 1973, before their first album "Journey" was released in 1975. I saw them perform in a small dining hall on the campus of the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. They brought ALL of their audio equipment. The speakers were stacked floor to ceiling and out to the walls on both sides of the small stage. The audience was not more than 200 people. Blew us all away!! Guitarist Neal Schon, what can I say...One of the best and most underrated guitarist of our time...Journey would (should) have remained a jazz-influenced progressive rock band to further the "Prog-Rock" genre, had it not been for the more profitable "Pop-Rock" influence of Steve Perry. From then on it was just so many pop tunes to sell records, and Neal took a back seat. Too bad. Don't get me wrong...I like their "Pop" vocal tunes...But I LOVE progressive rock...(Yes, ELP, Genesis, etc.)...Saw them all back in their early days. I just wish that band I saw at the dining hall in '73 had remained in the progressive rock genre of those times. Ahh...what could have been...

This was the Journey I loved before Steve Perry. Different lineup and different type of music, but the one constant all these years is Neal Schon. As well known as he is, he is underrated. He can do it all. And of course the rest of this band was killer.

Unfortunately I never has heard of them at that point. Being a big progressive rock guy, I would have surely gotten into them if I had been exposed.

Like others, I was a huge fan way before they became superstars. I wore out those first 3 albums, saw that band with Ronnie Montrose, freaking killer show. Neal Schon is truly one of the best, from Santana to early Journey, becoming a superstar and stints in Bad English and Paul Rodgers, the man has had an amazing career and still has it to this very day. Try Look Into the Future from their 2nd album, another utter classic. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Sing was written for the comet Kohoutek which was to visit earths orbit in the 1970s and only visits us every 75,000 years. Many cult groups were actually in fear of it's appearance in Earth's orbit. The sing was written and released to coincide with this universe event. Wild.

Now you're on the right track! I tried suggesting Al Di Meola, Allen Holdsworth, Return to Forever & a few others a long time ago! This is a fantastic album but these other bands have masters degrees while Journey is still in high school! Stay on this jazz/fusion road and you will be smiling the whole way but may not get the numbers you need. You will find that you have heard many of these artists on huge hit songs as session players and not known who they were.

1975. Some friends and I were going to see Kansas at the Eureka Municipal Auditorium. Bad news, the generators on their truck were too loud and they couldn't play. Do we get a refund or just see the opening band? Journey played at least three hours and blew all our minds. Food times, been a fan ever since.

There is not one bad track on this album. Look into the Future and Next are similarly great, but this really was a singular debut album. Like others, I also enjoy a lot of material from the Steve Perry era, but these albums are in a class of their own, a higher level. No disrespect to Steve Perry, but on these first three albums, everyone was a legit player on their instruments, including Greg Rollie, whose singing was as good as his keyboard playing. Neil Schon, the guitarist, also had a great voice. Ross Vallory (bass) and Ansley Dunbar (drums) were a solid backbone. These guys were top-notch!

To watch them live back then, doing this material, was truly a treat... I saw the 1st show with Perry at the Old Waldorf a club in SF. Journey opened that show with Of a Lifetime, they brought Perry out at the end for the encore. The crowd reaction was pretty muted...didn't really know what to make of that change cause it was so different. But they certainly made the right career move there. Glad to see a knowledgeable artist as yourself appreciate what you just heard, that was a great reaction.

Hey Wilburn, I am juuuuust a little late to the party but, you just reacted to my favorite band of all time: pre-Steve Perry Journey! I have not read all the comments so I am sure others have talked about this song and this album. I will be checking out your other reaction from this album directly after I post this man! hehe Just in case...what you have here is Journey's first album featuring Greg Rollie (Keyboards and vocals), Neal Schon lead guitar, George Tickner (rhythm guitar), Ross Valerie (bass) and Ansley Dunbar (drums). Greg Rollie was prior to Journey with Santana (Black Magic Woman, etc..) and a very young Neil Schon was with Greg in Santana prior to them forming Journey but, George has also died so the first member of Journey to leave us is GT. George Tickner only appeared on this first album but, was an original member of Journey. Ross Valerie has played on many of Journey's albums though he left the band or was booted but, later came back and then left or was booted again? Ansley lasted through the first two Journey albums with Steve Perry then he left or was forced out for what ever reasons (disagreements with SP, alcohol abuse...I have heard both. No clue but, he left and was never back). Greg Rollie also left after the second SP album and has never come back). The first 3 Journey albums (Journey, Look In To The Future and Next) were all like the first album in that the music was of a hard rock progressive style of music though they were put under increasing pressure by their record label because they were not selling enough records and after Next their label told them if the next record didn't sell they were getting dropped from the label. Journey manager Herbie Herbert knew Steve Perry and convinced SP to come up to the San Francisco Bay Area where Journey was based to jam with the band and see if they were a fit. Well, SP turned Journey's fortunes around and they all became famous, made a lot of money and are now in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame because of what SP was able to do for Journey. Unfortunately Steve also broke my favorite band up and I cannot listen to any of the stuff they did after Journey Infinity. Infinity is a unique record for Journey. Infinity is a bridge album from what Journey had been to what it was about to become. I think Infinity is a remarkable album but, I rarely listen to it preferring the first 3 albums. If you are looking for more really interesting bands to react to let me suggest the following: Kansas-Carry On My Wayward Son Jeff Beck-Blue Wind Pat Travers-Off Beat Ride Robin Trower- Too Rolling Stoned Return To Forever-Vulcan Worlds Jean Luc Ponty-Egocentric Molecules (live version) Santana- All I Ever Wanted I apologize for writing a book here but, as you can tell I am a freak about music man. hahaha Totally respect what you are about. Life long learning man. There is just so much out there today. It's like an endless smorgasbord! Cheers, Peter St. John Clovis, CA

This (and the next two albums) IS the real Journey, and it is their first album. Those of us that were around then and were in the know, had (and probably still have) the vinyl of these. It's the only ones I bought, and the only ones I play. Yes...I've heard their later stuff (saw them when they introduced their new singing addition)...and their fourth album isn't terrible, as Gregg Rolie wrote and sang some of the songs. The duets were ok...but they were already changing. Eventually, they were just another pop band (albeit with better guitar work than most).
