Your right but lets not forget the fact that Steve's drumming has come along way since his time with Journey. There is a huge difference in his playing now and then and for anyone to say that its not true is simply a lack of knowledge in drumming and a lack of respect for Steve's years of perseverance to be a better drummer. CHEERS!

That's part of the reason he was "kicked" out of the band. Steve's talent expanded the limits of rock along with his personal interests in other styles.

Horrible camera work. It's a drum solo, not a face solo.

Yeah, but Steve had much more finesse than Tommy Aldridge. Tommy was great for metal, don't get me wrong. But Steve can do so much more than just hit the drums really hard and be flashy.

@joanmesa Right, and I'm calling you out as being ignorant and suggesting you may look at other performances to maybe no be so ignorant. Seeing as how it's been over 30 years since this performance, you'd only assume a drummer to mature/get better..

Machine gun fingers? Does S Perry think he played drums with his fingers?

@joanmesa you're obviously very familiar with the entirety of his work then? This was pretty stupid, sure... I'd suggest watching other Steve Smith videos before you make a blatantly ignorant assumption such as that.

Journey was a great progressive rock band that put out 3 albums. then some other teeny bopper took over vocals and ruined the band. too bad Steve sold out. Ainsley was smart and split.

Classic stupid 80's drum solo. He's WAY better than this, this was totally bland. All these drum solos from 80's supergroups had all kinds of double bass with extended cymbal crashing. A lot of show, not much substance. I couldn't stand his snare sound. But he was way more talented than most arena-rock drummers at the time.

Not much substance? I guess you didn't notice the implied time playing, the extended augmented improvising on a conceptual idea, the over the bar line phrases and the sheer heart and fire in his playing, he is a superior musician now and he was a superior musician even back then period end of discussion.

Neil Pearts' YYZ solo in 1981, I believe? On Exit Stage Left, and ever other solo he did after that are some pretty good 1980s live solos. Not to mention his crafting of the songs/drumming each song of every concert in its entirety. Steve Smith grew so much from the 1980s as a player. Never stopped taking lessons. Especially jazz oriented. Always tried to improve; as Neil did..........🙏🏆

This was just the ending, but casual concert fans just want something that sounds complicated and loud and sweaty. They don't actually know some less-flashy things are a lot more complicated. The groove he plays in the Party's Over is a hell of a lot more complicated than this, but casual music fans think it's a simple 4/4 beat, they don't notice the hi-hat rolls with the floor tom beat. Highly original in those days. Nowadays, Todd Sucherman is my fave
