I saw them seven times, and I saw them twice with Aynsley Dunbar on drums. First time was just Journey, no Steve Perry. Steve Smith was in the opening act, Ronnie Montrose solo tour. I knew that cat was good as I lived Enigmatic Ocean, and Steve Smith was the drummer on that album. Then, we saw Journey with Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. I forced my girlfriend to go with me as I got to see Aynsley and Carl Palmer. Much to our shock, on the second tune, out comes this dude in a red suit, with red tennis shoes, and he was doing harmonies with Greg Rolie and he wa so spot on, he just blew us away, and then they did Wheel in the Sky which NONE of us had ever heard at that time. Lukather and Paich sang lead on several of their songs, and several songs featured 2 or 3 singers exchanging lead vocals on verses and chorus,etc..then, after Kimball left, they got a plethora of other singers to take his place...I always heard Kimball had a lot of personal issues, is why they let him go..a shame, as he had such a great distinctive voice..I feel if Kimball had been able to step up and be "THE" lead singer in Toto, and had sang lead on most of their songs, they would have had more consistent commercial success...lead vocals by committee doesn't do much for a band trying to establish an identity, and is seldom successful, although it seemed to work for Fleetwood Mac, and several successful bands have had 2 lead vocalists...

"Group of unknowns"? "Launched the band to the next level"? "Credibility that didn't exist"? Journey was formed by Gregg Rolie - who was the singer and keyboardist during Santana's classic period - he played at Woodstock. He is the singer on Black Magic Woman. Neal Schon joined Santana for their classic third album when he was seventeen years old, after turning down an offer from Eric Clapton. Dunbar was a respected drummer at the time, having played with Zappa, among others, but, respectfully, Rolie and Schon didn't need Dunbar for cred, or to get them to the next level - just sayin'. Peace🙏

When his solo Albums were re-released and remastered in 2006, he released 2 more unreleased tracks ("Can't Stop" and "Friends of Mine" ) from his unreleased album as bonus tracks on "For the Love of Strange Medicine" album. The album wasn't released because the record company didn't hear any singles or like the musical direction of the 11 tracks he submitted. The woman Perry is posing with at 9:20 isn't Kellie Nash. It's Martha Quinn from MTV.

I do not blame him. The music industry is brutal.

Steve Perry is Journey, the VOICE

Your videos are great but you should really either invest into a pop filter for your microphone, or run your audio through a low cut filter. Your plosives (especially the letter "p") when you talk are subwoofer killers. Still a thumbs up for a very informative documentary!

The way Herbert described it, Fleischman was not kicked out because Fleischman had a poor attitude, but because Herbert liked Perry's voice a lot better.

Journey was good before Perry but you can feel the missing voice. Perry made Journey Great. The music industry, like the "entertainment industry" talked about by David Chappelle, was predatory and abusive. In truth artists are more important than the industry but the pay goes the other direction.

Of all of his solo references, how can you not mention "Of, Sherrie"?

Steve Perry, Dennis DeYoung, and Freddie Mercury are my top three rock vocalists (in no particular order...I can't rank them, I love them all)

Perry does have a great voice which is rare even in today’s artists. Myles Kennedy has similar talent and keeps moving Rock in the right direction
