@@CP-ux9zd It seems like a lot of rock stars get hooked on drugs and alcohol. I wonder if it is a way to cope with the highs and lows of being on the road. You have people screaming your name and clapping. But then you go back to your room or on the bus and it is so quiet.

I saw them seven times, and I saw them twice with Aynsley Dunbar on drums. First time was just Journey, no Steve Perry. Steve Smith was in the opening act, Ronnie Montrose solo tour. I knew that cat was good as I lived Enigmatic Ocean, and Steve Smith was the drummer on that album. Then, we saw Journey with Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. I forced my girlfriend to go with me as I got to see Aynsley and Carl Palmer. Much to our shock, on the second tune, out comes this dude in a red suit, with red tennis shoes, and he was doing harmonies with Greg Rolie and he wa so spot on, he just blew us away, and then they did Wheel in the Sky which NONE of us had ever heard at that time. Pretty amazing stuff.

Which Toto singer? They have had several of them...Bobby Kimball the main lead vocalist at first, with Steve Lukather and David Paich singing lead on some songs, and frequently all 3 sharing lead vocals on songs...then Kimball left, and was replaced with 2 or 3 different lead vocalists, one of which was Joseph Williams...also, didn't Kansas have a couple of different lead vocalists at different times?....@@davenero8243

Maybe Bobby Kimball? Lukather and Paich sang lead on several of their songs,and several songs featured 2 or 3 singers exchanging lead vocals on verses and chorus,etc..then, after Kimball left, they got a plethora of other singers to take his place...I always heard Kimball had a lot of personal issues, is why they let him go..a shame, as he had such a great distinctive voice..I feel if Kimball had been able to step up and be "THE" lead singer in Toto, and had sang lead on most of their songs, they would have had more consistent commercial success...lead vocals by committee doesn't do much for a band trying to establish an identity, and is seldom successful, although it seemed to work for Fleetwood Mac, and several successful bands have had 2 lead vocalists...

Saw them in '83...and because of our seats (me and my girl...we were in our early 20s) Steve would grab this pole and sing to me and my girl! Like 3 feet away. SO close I heard him not him over the sound system. I'll never forget they were so perfect..so spot on, I couldnt tell if it was the album being played. I am so glad I lived in a big city back in the day of good music. Ive seen almost EVERYONE. Even Led Zeppelin at the ASU Activity Center when I was 14! I remember buying my girlfriend a Journey T-shirt for Christmas. If you didn't life back then, you'll never understand howe big and popular their iconography was. Their Scarab/wings//Egyptian inspired logo and album art was so cool looking that is was a really cool image for t-shirts.

Awesome story. We saw Huey Lewis in a small club in Okc before anyone knew anything about him. We sat in club table closest to the stage. I walked right up against the stage and took pics with my macro zoom lens 35mm. Had to cover the lens until I clicked the shutter cause the spit and sweat was flying. They were PERFECT. Every song went on the radio and shot up the charts. Live was even better than the album. Which is almost never the case. Amazing and perfect.

Suzanne is a good one...probably my favorite song on the whole album was "It Could Have Been You"...from the catchy groove to some of Steve's most soulful vocals..."Girl Can't Help It" would be second...I remember buying the album as soon as I could get it, listening to it all the way through, and asserting it was one of their best albums yet, if not THE best. And I was certain "It Could Have Been You" would be a top 10 single at some point...and perplexed a year or two later, that it was never even released as a single....@@Jonasbarbury

The significance of Aynsley Dunbar joining the band is completely overlooked in this piece. He launched the band to the next level and took a huge chance joining this group of unknowns. He changed the trajectory of the band and gave them huge credibility that didn’t exist until he joined,
@kcewing1

"Group of unknowns"? "Launched the band to the next level"? "Credibility that didn't exist"? Journey was formed by Gregg Rolie - who was the singer and keyboardist during Santana's classic period - he played at Woodstock. He is the singer on Black Magic Woman. Neal Schon joined Santana for their classic third album when he was seventeen years old, after turning down an offer from Eric Clapton. Dunbar was a respected drummer at the time, having played with Zappa, among others, but, respectfully, Rolie and Schon didn't need Dunbar for cred, or to get them to the next level - just sayin'. Peace🙏

In 1994 on his CD singles for "You Better Wait" and "Missing You" he released 8 songs( 4 songs on each CD) from his unreleased "Against the Wall " album. The other four songs ("Against the Wall" , " When You're in Love(for the first time)", " Summer of Luv" , and "Once in a Lifetime, Girl" ) were released on the "Greatest Hits" Album in 1998. When his solo Albums were re-released and remastered in 2006, he released 2 more unreleased tracks ("Can't Stop" and "Friends of Mine" ) from his unreleased album as bonus tracks on "For the Love of Strange Medicine" album. The album wasn't released because the record company didn't hear any singles or like the musical direction of the 11 tracks he submitted. He hasn't reunited with Journey because his voice can't handle the touring they would want to do if he returned.

He went away to take care of his wife. She had cancer and he disappeared to take care of her and was done with music. He came back to keep a promise to his wife to not hide his talent and to get back out there and share his talent. I was THRILLED to death when he released his latest solo albums. I was so happy that he did not disappear for good.

Are you sure it wasn't his mother instead of a wife? I remember hearing back in the day that he left his re-joining with Journey because he needed to spend time with his mom who was ill and/or dying. It's been a long time. I could be remembering it wrong.

@@marvinmartian8746 The final split came in 1998 when Steve was hiking in Hawaii and injured his hip. The band members tried to force Steve to get hip surgery and Steve wasn't having that. The band waited for him for awhile but decided to go on without him.

That was an Interesting note about Perry being with the band during a sound check in Long Beach in 1977. My dad said he saw Journey in 1977 at Long Beach Arena. They opened for Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Steve Perry didn't perform but it was interesting what was going on behind the scenes right at that time.

Your videos are great but you should really either invest into a pop filter for your microphone, or run your audio through a low cut filter. Your plosives (especially the letter "p") when you talk are subwoofer killers. Still a thumbs up for a very informative documentary!

Journey was good before Perry but you can feel the missing voice. Perry made Journey Great. The music industry, like the "entertainment industry" talked about by David Chappelle, was predatory and abusive. In truth artists are more important than the industry but the pay goes the other direction.
