This is one of the oldest and most historic Masjids in Albania. The Masjid is located in the Skanderbeg Square, Tirana. Construction was started in 1791 and was finished in 1819/1821, during the Ottoman rule. The Masjid played a significant role towards the independence of Albania.
After World War II most of the Masjids, Churches and other religious institutions were completely destroyed by the communist ruler. Practicing any religion was forbidden and anyone found doing it, was persecuted.
While most of the Masjids and Churches were destroyed during the communist era, somehow this Masjid wasn’t destroyed. It was closed down and declared a historical monument.
On January 18, 1991, despite opposition from communist authorities, 10,000 people gathered around the Masjid and the surrounding Skanderbeg Square area and the revolution for independence was started. That was the beginning of the fall of communism in Albania.
The Masjid today is fully functional and one of the major tourist attractions in Tirana. We visited this Masjid several times during our stay in Tirana. Alhamdu’Lillah, the Masjid was almost half full during all the prayers.
In 2021, the Masjid was restored by the Turkish government.
