You're killing me! I have been to Albania four times and you are making me want to go again. The food, being all organic and fresh is simple but more flavourful than anything this side of the Atlantic. Faleminderit shume!! (I think the locals would prefer you to say "raki", not "rakija".) I first had raki at 9 in the morning on a Tuesday and never forgot it. It really "opens up the sluices at both ends"! Magical.
@FM-xr5nj3 жыл бұрын
Hey Doug, did you have any issues with the language while you were there, or does everyone speak English for the most part? How were you able to get around? I'm interested in visiting but don't know how to speak Albanian.
@dougtucker47833 жыл бұрын
@@FM-xr5nj In Tirana, you can get by with English. But you should get the Simon & Schuster (sp?) How to Speak Albanian. 10 lessons of 20 minutes each. Good primer and it will charm people as well as being practical.

Raik and rakija are both correct in albanian, they mean the same thing here. The base noun for the drink is raki. U can ad the -ja suffix sometimes. It's interchangeablefor example we can say both "Rakia eshte e mire" or "rakija eshte e mire" to mean "(the) rakija is good/delicious" I guess it depends from the region. But simply "raki" is the "non-the" form of the noun So Albanian - English Raki = rakija Rakija/rakia = the rakija

raki- is popular in Greece, Bosnia and other Balkan countries and is called the national drink of Turkey. Similar to Greek ouzo and Italian grappa, the nonsweet spirit was originally produced from the solid residue of the grape - the skin, pulp, seed and stem - that remained after the fruit was pressed to make wine.
