Can light travel through space that is at absolute zero? in other words, does absolute zero affect photons?
@makismakiavelis5718
@makismakiavelis5718 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting... I don't know the answer. I read that 0 K is impossible because there are always going to be random quantum fluctuations on the fundamental particle level. The photon (γ) is a fundamental particle belonging to the group of the Gauge Bosons so it is regarded as a force carrier. A particle that participates in one of the four fundamental interactions. More specifically the photon is the carrier of the electromagnetic radiation (light). I have no idea what would happen to light in a theoretical 0 K universe but my guess is that nothing would be able to happen. Same as with the thermodynamic equilibrium. When everything, everywhere has the same temperature, be it 0 K or 1 x 10¹⁰⁰ K, then nothing can happen anymore. Everything stops. Energy needs a temperature gradient in order to be able to flow.
@camicus-3249
@camicus-3249 5 жыл бұрын
Since temperature is essentially a measurement of the energy of particles, I would imagine light could pass by just fine. I can't really see why some low-energy particles would actually affect photons. (Not that I know either)

Yes light can still travel. No you yourself cannot travel at light speed because you still have mass, I.E. infinite energy to reach the speed of light.
@BothHands1
@BothHands1 5 жыл бұрын
Makis Makiavelis Yeah, as far as i can tell, as soon as any form of electromagnetic radiation enters an area, it becomes higher than absolute zero pretty much by definition, so the light would move fine. But also the temperature wouldn't be absolute zero anymore. The question is about a physical impossibility. But you're right, either way, quantum fluctuations of the actual vacuum of spacetime itself prevent our universe from reaching absolute zero.

Kelvin is the international system for temperature. While you might not use Kelvin normally, it is rather used in science to be more exact as well as it’s base being the absolute zero and it kinda follows the same rules as Celsius. At least much better than Fahrenheit which is impossible to spell and makes (in my opinion) no sense. Not to mention that the U.S.A. is the only country where they use Fahrenheit for some odd reason. Kinda like the imperial system. None of those two make sense.

There's one thing you failed to mention, that no one mentions, but it's important. Which is, that there is a minimum temperature that the cosmic background radiation can ever fall to.... and that is the temperature of the unruh radiation due to the cosmic horizon that results from the cosmological constant/dark energy. This is the temperature the universe will tend to in the far future, and it is not zero. It is the same termperature as the temperature of hypothetical hawking radiation from a black hole with a schwarzschild radius of 15 to 20 billion lightyears, the static limit of the universe. Considering the temperature of the hawking radiation is 183 microkelvins divided by its radius in meters, take 183 microkelvins, and multiply by the ratio of 1 meter divided by 15 billion light years and you get the final ultimate temperature of the universe.

"Fahrenheit is unscientific." I wonder if that statement will later seem ironic. "Degrees Kelvin." Easy mistake if you're not scientific. "Deserts at night move way further from the sun." LOL. Only 1:30 in. This could be a bumpy ride. "At -18 we reach the recommended fridge temperature." Fridge/freezer. Whatever. "In Finland (in Europe)..." In case you might confuse it with Finland, Minnesota. "On the Moon the average temperature is -53° during the day. ... On Mars the average surface temperature during the day won't get much higher than 63° below zero." The figures I found put daytime temperatures about 100° warmer on both. And finally, "Kelvins." With an S.
