Join me on this comprehensive review of TransWA's flagship and only long distance Western Australia Passenger train service as we hop on board the Prospector Train and journey to Australia's Golden Outback from East Perth to the gold mining outback city of Kalgoorlie which is located some 653km east of Perth by rail. Completing the journey in just 6 hour and 55 minutes means whilst certainly it is not in the same league as many European or North Asian high speed trains, surprisingly the Prospector train service is considered to be the fastest average passenger speed train in Australia!
Whilst much of the attention of great Australia's railway journeys tends to focus on east coast routes, The Prospector is often forgotten about as a contender for one of Australia's best regional train services which transports its passengers from the Mediterranean city of Perth to Australia's golden outback in little under 7 hours!
In today's review of the Prospector Train I seek to showcase all aspects of the Prospector train service with everything from the railway cars themselves, seating, crew, on board catering, entertainment, seating and also practical information such as pricing, booking and route information.
Whilst I'm at it I'll also showcase all all the magnificent scenery that you can expect along the way as the train departs out of Perth and through the lush green rolling hills of the Avon Valley and then through the prime agricultural lands of the Wheatbelt all before it enters the starkly different looking Australians goldfields en-route into Kalgoorlie! I'll also be sure point out and provide some basic history or information about the notable towns and stations that the train stops at as well.
In this review you'll see:
00:00 Arrival at Perth Train Station and transfer to East Perth Train Station
01:00 Arrival at East Perth Train Station (beginning of commentary at 2min mark)
03:00 Pre departures formalities and East Perth Public Transport Centre
08:20 Prospector train and route information +booking details
10:25 Boarding and seat information
12:00 Departure from East Perth enroute to Midland +Surburban Perth public transport overview
16:30 Arrive into Midland
17:00 Departure from Midland for Toodyay +geographical+ information for today's journey
25:00 Arrival into Toodyay
26:00 Departure for Northam and information about AvonValley and Wheatbelt
29:00 Arrival into Northam
30:00 Departure for Meckering + entertainment review
35:00 Journey to Meckering and earthquake information
36:45 Arrival into Cunderdin
38:00 Arrival into Kellerberrinn
39:15 Departure and journey to Merredin
43:15 Arrival into Merredin and Crew change
46:00 Departure from Merredin bound for Southern Cross
51:00 Arrival into Southern Cross
52:00 Departure from Southern Cross bound for Kalgoorlie through goldfields
1:0:03:00 Arrival into Kalgoorlie and final thoughts and verdict on the train journey
**Corrections**
In my commentary about the train services that you can take from East Perth Station I incorrectly said that the AvonLink departs this station, it in fact actually departs from Midland Station, some 16kms from that station

Thanks for watching Phill - yes certainly will be keen to see what the new rail cars are like - I’m sure I’ll do a review as soon as the line reopens! The Australiand was certainly becoming rather aged! You may be interested in my Overland review coming out this Sunday so stay tuned for that one too :)

Long time subscriber here. Great video! As an East Coaster, I enjoyed watching your WA trip and enjoyed it especially as I didn't need to wake up as early as you did ;)

Great video mate! Was surprised about the seat back entertainment! Certainly a trip I’d like to go on and I’m glad it covers distance relatively quick… the last trip I went on (overland - Melbourne to Adelaide) - just dragged on (10 hours)… but this seems more enjoyable. Nice one!

Thanks so much for watching @ Luke Crisp absolutely worth giving a go - a surprisingly modern and fast Australian train and a quite a scenic journey though many landscapes such as the Avon Valley, WheatBelt and Goldfields! Yes whilst still not quick for European or North East Asia standards its much faster than many of the East Coast trains I've done whilst the Northern Explorer in NZ that I did covers a similar distance in more like 11 hours!

I wonder why the first and last doors on the trains next to the driver cabs are for staff only, and passengers are not allowed to enter or exit the train through there?

That’s a really good question actually that I’m not too sure of the answer. Thanks so much for watching hope you enjoy it!

Very true indeed certainly helps! That being said it’s a little hilly departing Perth going through the Avon Valley and then it’s pretty flat after that. Kalgoorlie is around 400mASL so the train does ascend at least some minor altitude!
