Our trip to the Emperor Penguin colony at Snow Hill Island, Antarctica. This is our journey on the Kapitan Khlebnikov icebreaker ship traveling to the Antarctic Peninsula. We had three full days observing the penguins raising their chicks. Penguin footage starts at 5 minutes.
Includes photos mixed in with video. Filmed October 20-27, 2018. Most photos and a few of the video clips are by Scott Sobel.
This includes the short Emperor Penguin clips posted separately on my channel.

I'm sure you're not allowed to pet them, but something about the way their coats look makes me want to see what they feel like. The adult plumage is probably really slick for the water.

16:00 Incidentally, some record-hunting penguins are struck down by the extreme latitude. It is rather insignificant whether the affected penguins are "flat earth penguins". The azimuth angle and in some cases the gliding tendency of the entered terrain on which the tailcoat bird slipped away is more essential 🐧⛷.

I have to admit that I was very curious about a few instances of the video that I saw. From all of my readings, documentaries and basic research I've done on the various penguin species, I know for certain that Emperor Penguins only lay one (1) egg during the breeding season. If a chick loses one or both parents during this time, especially early in the season (when both parents must take turns eating/fishing..one parent feeds while the other parent stays back and watches over the chick.), they become an orphan. It's been well-documented that parents with a chick will not entertain the idea of even remotely tending to another's chick, let alone feed one as their one and only goal is the survival of their own chick. They will immediately shoo away the orphan chick, and may even get downright violent with said chick to convey the message that the chick is not wanted in their vicinity. In this video, during multiple parts, I viewed what looked like a parent entertaining two chicks. I did not actually see one adult feed two separate chicks, but I definitely saw what looked like the same adult providing general protection/security to two separate chicks. Did anyone else notice this? It was really interesting to me, and I'm really wondering if I saw what I think I saw.

Thank you for the comment and interesting observation. Once the chicks are big enough to form creches I think it is normal for one or a few adults to oversee an entire creche. I'm not sure about an adult and two individual chicks but that doesn't really surprise me, as long as its not about being fed. As far as I know you are correct that an adult will only feed his/her own chick. Its amazing how they find each other by the calls in that noisy colony, and the chicks move around so much!

2:43, algae under ice forms base of food chain. Your icebreaker boat broke this ice, at the same time did you destroy the food chain for penguin? The less people visit the penguin colony, the safer the penguin will be.
@unmonitored_object
@unmonitored_object 4 жыл бұрын
No, it doesn’t really break the food chain. There are more algae under the ice than in that one scene.

What do the adults eat? They probably have not eaten anything for months, how can they still regurgitate food?
@InSearchofWildlife
@InSearchofWildlife 5 жыл бұрын
The adults go out to sea frequently to eat fish and krill and bring back food for the chicks. The colony is on sea ice and they walk back and forth between the edge of the ice to go into the water and the colony. Its only in the winter that the males do not eat while incubating the eggs.

@@bvsd4396 It would be bad for them to be petted and have human contact. It wouldn't be an immediate danger, more of an issue of losing being wild. It would also certainly ruin the experience of everyone on the trip who is there to observe them going about their natural activities.

@@bvsd4396 The birds themselves have no smell that I noticed. Of course I didn't stick my nose right up against any. In walking around near the colony some places had a bit of a guano smell where many have been pooping on the ice.
