What lies at the heart of our galaxy? For twenty years, ESO’s Very Large Telescope and the Keck telescopes have observed the centre of the Galaxy, looking at the motion of more than a hundred stars and identifying the position of an otherwise invisible object - the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy.
![](www.eso.org/public/archives/el...)
Embark on a Journey to the Centre of the Milky Way and during seven minutes travel faster than light, from the driest place on Earth, the Atacama Desert in Chile right to the centre of our own galaxy, where a black hole is consuming anything that strays into its path. 84 million stars will appear in front of your eyes, each hiding mysteries waiting to be solved. Are there planets around them, perhaps with moons? Do they have water? Could they harbour life?
Journey to the Centre of the Milky Way is the first fulldome planetarium mini-show produced in-house by ESO for its Planetarium and Visitor Centre, the ESO Supernova, due to open in spring 2018. Available for free in 4k resolution, the mini-show can be downloaded and used by any planetarium in the world. More free fulldome clips are here.

The introduction sequence of the milky way baffles me: When rotating the telescope with respect to earth, I would expect the galaxy to remain in position, while earth's surroudings rotate. Otherwise, when fixing the telescope to earth, I would expect the earth's surroundings in position and the galaxy to rotate, like it happens in 5:56. But in the introduction sequence 0:56 both the earth and the galaxy rotate, allbeit with slightly different speeds. How's that? Otherwise very nice and good presentation on the heart of the galaxy.
@michaelhoste_
@michaelhoste_ 3 жыл бұрын
The Milky Way seems to rotate around the sky over a period of 24 hours due to the rotation of the Earth. In the first view the telescope only takes minutes to rotate to a new position so the galaxy is in almost exactly the same position or angle in relation to the Earth - so they will both rotate in the telescope’s view. Later the telescope also rotates but much more slowly, tracking the galaxy’s apparent rotation around the sky - it would take the telescope 24 hours to go all the way around (although in both cases the sequence is sped up in the video. )
@agerven
@agerven 3 жыл бұрын

Gravity does not influence (travel) faster than light. This is why the galaxy has spiral arms. As the gravitational influence spreads out away from the black hole there is a "lag" effect on stars that are light years away from it and the further you get away from the black hole the more spread out the lag is. Similar "lag" occurs during super novas as the expanding explosion spreads out over light years the impact on the gas in the path of the shock wave distorts and "bends" the arms and twists them.

Luther Ransom, Jr. No it isn't. That is very old school idea. The rotation curve of the galaxy is relatively flat due to the dark matter halo. If it were caused by differential rotation the arms would wind up, they don't, if they did they would be transitory.

What do you mean a star that doesn’t emit light? That is basically what a black hole is! - a collapsed star with so much ‘energy’ (gravity) that light can’t escape. Which is what you have described.
