Hi Ross, Well done! Your story brought back a flood of memories. We did this exact climb 33 years ago. My son Aaron Lamb was 16 at the time and this was his introduction to Africa. We did the climb in April, lots of rain, snow and fog. The assault the peak in the middle of the night was clear, above the clouds and as you said, the sunrise was worth it. Thank you so much. I appreciated the great editing and every agonizing step the last thousand metres of the assent.

This is much luxurious than other videos/route. You still sleep in proper building right up in the foot of the mountain, while in other route hikers were camping on day 1. No wonder there's less porter in your tour since everything has been built, other route were brutal, they even bring tables and chairs, not just tent.

Many years ago I would be in South Wales ,UK , Brecon Beacons every other weekend in my school days and some routes were challenging and you have to push through mental and physical barriers , but Kilimanjaro , which I have actually seen from Nairobi , is absolutely something else . Fantastic video Ross. One of the best on the net. I climbed Kili via the Rongai route several years back. I descended on the Marangu route. Your videos brought back many great memories. As you described in the story, one cannot capture just how emotional reaching the top is, how great the guides and porters are, and how one forms an incredible bond with those that have done it with you. This video obviously didn’t touch on the descent down the Marangu Route, but I will say the first time I felt “like a human being” after summiting was back at Horombo - the sleep that night was fantastic (and much needed). Thanks for watching! Have a blast in February, and enjoy the hotel! One big tip for the climb is to count your steps on summit night - when your body starts shutting down and you can’t think straight, go back to basics and focus on just putting one foot in front of the other (really helps!) As for things to do around the hotel, we had a great guided tour from a local resident to a nearby waterfall - it was lovely!

Thanks Shweta! No one from our 4-person group has done both (yet!). I’ve heard the difficulty is comparable (in terms of altitude), but the trekking distance to Everest Base Camp is much more substantial (~130km vs. ~75km on Marangu Route up Kilimanjaro). Hope that helps!
