Byron, you are a master film-maker and story-teller and have just quite possibly posted the best ever video about Mana Pools on KZbin! But more than that, you are a super human being - having you along on this wild wild journey was such a pleasure and we can’t wait to share more sightings, beers and jokes with you in the future, hopefully in the wildest of places… Until next time 😉

Zimbabwean here .This is really one of the best videos I've seen on Mana Pools. Nicely done. Old people in the rural areas will tell you, big tuskers like Boswell were once very common. Trophy hunting plus poaching have both had a devastating effect. We have to find a way to rebuild that gene pool

Beautiful photography. I was there for the game count and have to correct you on one comment. It is NOT for free. We paid a lot of money to do that game count. 250USD per person. The money is supposed to go to infrastructure but as you stated, the camp is rundown and the management of the game is lacking. Having said that, it is a memory I will never forget and am blessed to have been able to go there twice in my life. Astounding film making.

Byron, I (Ian) echo all the praises that other subscribers have heaped on you, your quiet commentary and wonderful camera work lets us viewers sit back and take in those beautiful scenes of a very magical place. Takes me back 50 years when I lived in Rhodesia and had to undertake border patrols along that magnificent river. Walking in that bush, under those big trees among the animals was quite spiritual. Rammed home the beauty of nature in all it's glory. Unfortunately my tour of duty was cut short when a hyena wandered into our ambush site one night and took a bite of part of my scalp leaving part of my soul forever in Eden. Thank you so much for this video.

Hello from India! Beautifully made video. I am an avid watcher of your videos. Mana pools is one special place. I have been lucky to visit Mana twice, once in 2016 and then in 2019. However, both times I stayed in few of the private camps in the park. I am not brave enough to do self camping, yet! The memories from both trips are special and still fresh in my mind. Watching Boswell doing his trick, trying to catch up (actually running) with the wild dogs as they chased and killed a kudu calf, watching a herd of buffaloes coming down to drink at Chitake Springs, their thundering hooves raising clouds of dust in the air, lions drinking from the spring late in the evening and their roars reverberating at night while lying in my tent, are memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you for virtually taking me to this special place, for I don't know when I can visit again.

Fantastic video, well done. I have spent three months at Mana Pools during the Rhodesian Bush War in 1971. I was in a South African Police camp. The vegetation was much dencer and grener than in the video. I can hardly believe that it's so dry. We came across a lot of lions. Sometimes walking through our camp. Wilddogs were plenty. We counted about twenty snake slither markings in about a kilometer distance. We saw plenty black and green mambas. Clemence Coetzee was the head game ranger there. There was "hotel" , more a wood structure, it was called, "The Tree lodge Hotel" if I recall correctly, it would not have lasted until now. I would love to go back there again. Keep up the good work with the cameras.
@WildWildJourneys3 ай бұрын
Thank you! Wow, it’s quite fascinating to hear about what it was like back then. I often wonder how certain wild places looked and felt like a while ago and what would’ve changed… the effects of the drought were very visible, especially with the lack of good vegetation for many of the species. Would also love to experience Mana Pools at the end of the rainy season.
@lesviljoen12893 ай бұрын
@WildWildJourneys I can assure you that the bush was so dense that when we rounded a corner the elephant was standing 10 meters in front of us, and I can assure you that they were not even close to as "friendly" as the ones you encountered. The previous groups for some reason ordered honey. When we took over camp there was possibly 15 boxes of honey x 24 per box. (Those riffled bottles) Every night when I was on guard duty I fetched 3 bottles or so and emptied it in a plastic tray because the Badgers visited our garbage hole. So I put that out for them. Very soon I was fetched as I approached and escorted with the tray by 5 Badgers pushing against my legs impatient to get to the try. I would go back to my post and watch them playing with the bottles I left for them to get the last of the honey out. I remember that I could read a paperback in the full moon. I eventually did four camps in Rhodesia and two in the Caprivi. Really enjoyed all of it.

Absolutely stunning! The wildlife and landscapes in Mana Pools National Park are breathtaking. It's incredible to see such a pristine ecosystem. Thank you for showcasing the beauty of Africa's Eden! 🌍❤

Great video. To clear up any misconceptions the game counts are organised by WEZ (Wildlife and Environment Zimbabwe) - not the Zimbabwe National Parks - since the 1950s. Volunteers from all over the world go to Mana and Hwange to take part - all mammals are counted not just elephants - over a period of 24 hrs. The national parks do reduce conservation fees for the 72 hrs by 50% ditto camp fees. We drove to Hwange and participated this year (from Australia). Extraordinary experience - we counted over 1400 mammals at one waterhole of which about 400 were elephant. It's usually held in late September/October - WEZ announce dates early in the year.

Thanks for letting me know about that, Richard. I must’ve heard the wrong info. Yes, all animals are counted - it does sound like an amazing experience. Good to know for next time that dates from WEZ must be checked before booking with Zim Parks. Thanks again

What a beautiful video Byron 👏👏👏. You have captured the magic and majesty of what I believe to be one of the most magical places on earth. To me, Mana Pools is the beating heart of Africa and I fell in love with this place on the very first time we visited in 2019. Your videos just keep getting better and better and I can’t wait to see your next production.

Thanks so much, Joe. To be fair, the beauty and magic of the place made it very easy to capture. Agree with it being the beating heart of Africa 💯
