Centuries after Sun Wukong had been imprisoned beneath Five Elements Mountain, the Buddha observed the people of China acting cruel and uncouth to one another. To remedy this, he declares that someone must be chosen to make the pilgrimage to India and return with the sacred scriptures. The chosen one is the monk Tang Sanzang, also called Tripitaka, who will need the help of the disgraced Monkey King, as well as a white dragon horse, a Pig demon, and a Sand demon in order to survive the many dangers that lay ahead!
MYTHOLOGY HAS BEEN TOLD AND RETOLD IN MANY FORMS ACROSS TIME, STORIES AND ACCOUNTS MAY VARY.

Story on Sun Wukong is a story of an extremely outstanding person shifting from fighting against a corrupt system to eventually learning to take advantage of a corrupt system. Most of the monsters they faced along the way of journey to the west are relatives of the gods in heaven. Like a son, a daughter, a nephew, or even just a heavenly coi fish. For all of these monsters with connections Sun Wukong was really holding back. And these monsters were always eventually spared by the heavenly gods at the end. But for the few monsters that didn't have a heavenly background like the skeleton monster, Sun executed them. Sun learned that by rebelling against a corrupt system you gain nothing in the end, but by playing by their rules you get everything in the end. This is the true moral of the story, a sarcasm on the Chinese society at the time. Lots of Chinese people know about this theme.

I think it was important to add that once the entire group is assembled, all the adventures throughout their journey to the west are not linear, but are more like isolated episodes that almost never connect one with another. This is because most of these adventures were a compilation of fantastic stories told by buddhist monks in China passed through oral tradition. What the author did, was to compile most of those stories and assemble them into a lineal story (similar to what happened with One Thousand and One Nights, which is actually a compilation of stories, not a linear story). This is also why some stories are even very similar one to another and sometimes fight very similar monsters or happen in very similar environments (villages, mountains, forests, caves, rivers, etc.), sometimes one story is a variation of another, this also explains why there is no such thing as a climatic battle (the closest one being vs the Bull Demon King which happens around 3/4 of the main story), or why when they are in the last village before buddha they don't even mention anything about it.

I'm not sure I see much of a difference between history and mythology. Pretty much the same things. If we weren't there for it, then it simply could all be made up... besides, it's like the telephone game. Anyhow, after so much translation, it becomes way inaccurate. However, it doesn't matter it's still good stories with morals/virtues.

Sun Wukong is my favorite Chinese mythology monkey god.He is arguably one of the well known mythology characters in Eastern Asia cultures At the end of his journey he obtained nirvana state Buddha hood make him nigh Omnipotent if not an Omnipotent being.I hope Mythology Unleashed would do a video about the characters Sun Wukong beings influenced by non other than Hanuman the monkey from Hindu mythology or others monkey deities Sarugami,Howler Monkey Gods,Ciudad Blanca.

Sun Wukong was the last child of the Earth Goddess. He hatched from a stone egg. Hanuman is son of Anjana and father Kesari, but is also known as the son of Vayu, the wind god; so perhaps Kesari is not his father after all. I don't see much connection between the two as Hanuman wasn't transporting scriptures nor are their tales of the Hanuman rebelling against heaven or eating the peaches of immortality. On the other hand, there are no tales of the Sun Wukong carting an entire island around because he doesn't know which herb he needs to pick. I will agree with the fact that they both had very long tales.

There are 4 mystical monkeys in Chinese myth and Sun Wukong is the most famous out of them given he’s the Victorious Fighting Buddha and one of the main characters in Journey to the West (one of the four Chinese classics). There’s also a second mystical monkey called Six-Eared Macaque which pretended to be Sun Wukong in the tale but the other two mystical monkeys are not mentioned at all in any of the other popular myths.

Actually, Tripitaka didn't put the circlet on Wukong's head, on Guanyin's instructions, he tricks Wukong to place it on his-own head-himself, inadvertently giving it power over him--likewise this is how the Buddha had gotten one over on Wukong 500-years-earlier, Wukong *agreeing* to their bet, inadvertently giving-himself into the Buddha's power. The moral of this story: *ALWAYS* read the fine-print before you sign-up for something.

The thing that always strikes me about "part 1" and "part 2" so to speak is how much weaker Sun Wukong is in the rest of journey to the west. In his dedicated part he fights the entire heavenly army to a draw, but in most of Journey to the West he's constantly challenged by fights that rightly shouldn't trouble him at all. granted he's 500 years out of practice, and many of his "losses" are due to environmental factors or weird loopholes (it's not fire, it's Holy Fire, totally different). Side note, I love these videos, but don't do a premiere notification 5 days in advance.

That's the underlying theme of the story. He's been massively holding back this entire time because he's on his own true journey to learn to be humble, instead of abusing his power just because he could. Same thing as Kratos in GOW 4. Underlying canon is that he's been holding back massively in all the fights while his true fight was to control his rage.

such a great video. when I was a kid we used to watch this tv thing about a monkey guy on a pink cloud with a pig and a dragon guy as well as this strange figure on a horse. Its great to watch your video since I can now fill in all the blanks. I remember monkey turning himself into a flea in one episode and another where they were running out of food so they were trying to decide who would draw the short straw! I never knew the dragon guy was the horse or that the monk was a guy since the actor must have been very beautiful. We all thought he was some kind of princess since the translation wasn't very good. It was so action packed with martial arts, magic and all kinds of crazy stuff. Thanks for solving this mystery for me. Now I know what the show was all about! I've really enjoyed your content of myths from around the world. Superb so I've subscribed and am very eager to see more. What will you cover next?

There used to be a mobile game called "Dragalia Lost". While it had its own main story, it often featured side stories in the form of events. Often these stories, as well as the characters that could be obtained, drew inspiration from folktales around the world. "Journey to the West" was one of these, and even got two events. Instead of scrolls they hunted for Qi Lin relics, magical artefacts that could cause trouble if improperly used. A few of these relics were based on items found in the story such as the gourd, Wukong's headband, and the one that created the flying cloud. I wonder how many players noticed.

You know, it's funny... People dont connect the dots to Dragon Ball beyond just names and idea basings and think it's just foundation. It's literally the depth of Wukongs mind.. Vegeta and Goku, their names, abilities and conflictions and iniability to face eachother represent the depth of the Great Monkey King.. Who they reflect when they combine/fuse... Gogeta.. at Once.. Every cosmic entity down to the cute names (bibdi babidi buu or kamehameha and the turtle island.. Puar, Oolong.. Everything) reflects something in sinewave energetics, vast native american/indigenous and pacific islander knowledge and a whole lot of Sanskrit knowledge.. ...Toriyama blessed us in ways we have yet to see or spiritually comprehend publically. The same with Naruto and the american anime based animation Avatar The Last Airbender (excluding Legend of Korra) Though not specific to the SunWukong/SonGoku in depth repainted myths and cosmic movements.. These are satill Buddhism/Sanskrit (cosmos as consciousness at once, the massive movement of which we are all apart) understandings significant to most ancient ppl once upon a time. Anthropomorphics and zoomorphics is unbelievable once you "see it".. it's everywhere.. and the ppl who come from deep cultures around the world that know how to write these things in modern ways while being so entertaining.. My absolute Heart... Ometeotl.

The Buddha did say that China had accepted Taoism and Confucianism and only needed one more school of thought to reach enlightenment and purity. If Buddhism was in China and Taoism was removed for example the state would revert to barbarity. Wu Cheng'en himself was a Daoist but had deep sympathies for Buddhism and Confucianism which is shown clearly in the book. One of the greatest books I've ever read its up there with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, the Bhagavad Gita, War and Peace, the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Iliad as well as the Odyssey. Too bad there isn't much audiobook stuff for it but you can still buy it and its highly recommended.

That story is base off from a different variant of the monkey king book where the stone give birth to 3 monkey king and not 1. Which is the strong monkey king. The six ear monkey king and the smart monkey king

I think Sun Wukong was the first Human king (homosapian). The jade emperor and the other gods are like Atlantian humans (denisovans)

The real journey is for all of them to reach enlightenment. Sun learned how to control his rage and power, and not destroy everything.

5:55 - I didn't like that gold band and I obviously don't like the equivalent I have in my head today!!! Either way, I MASTERED both the gold band and this otherworldly torture tech because I AM THE MONKEY KING!!! The main difference is that today I am a mere human being. I had to master this otherworldly tech with just above average strength for a human being these days and I did it at an EXTREMELY YOUNG AGE. Talk about TOUGH!!! But I did it and so can all sentient beings!!!
