I learned the Egyptian Sphinx is known as an androsphinx when I was doing some research for my own mythos. Chimera, the Sphinx, the Manticore, and the Androsphinx serve as the first-created chimeras (named for Chimera herself by the one who mercy-killed her, Genbu, the High King of the North).

Fun fact: Both the Lernaean Hydra and the Chimera were usually depicted as being female. Ladon being killed by Heracles wasn't in the original mythos, as he was too powerful and dangerous for Heracles to take on. That is why he got Atlas to take the golden apples for him, Ladon's retainers were daughters of Atlas, and even though they were aligned with the gods, Ladon still extended some attachment to Atlas enough that he let the titan take some of the apples
@beastmaster09342 жыл бұрын
The latter being female is weird, since she has a male lion’s head Then again, some lionesses can grow manes if they have enough testosterone in ‘em. So perhaps that was the case with Chimera. It would also explain her high aggression.
@goomba81702 жыл бұрын
@@beastmaster0934 In case you didn’t notice, the chimera is an amalgam of various types of creatures. Her being female is perhaps the least odd thing about her, or at least in line with how strange she already is.

What if Cerberus is our mouth!? =) 1- Hades reigns on the depths of the realm of our body "our belly", Hades can symbolize our appetite, our eating instinct. 2- The entrance to Hades' realm is guarded by Cerberus, a three-headed monster with a snake tail that only lets the dead in and never lets anyone back out. 3- The entrance to our belly starts with the mouth ! =) Cerberus is our mouth with three heads (lips, teeth and tongue) it devours the dead (dead food in the sense that it is inanimate and doesn't move), the snake tail represents our throat that swallows food. The swallowed food no longer comes out of our insides, just as the dead no longer come out of hell. 4- Cerberus is also found in Dante's Divine Comedy, where he is the guardian of the third circle of hell. and guess what! =) It's the circle of the sin of gluttony! =) So, in Dante too, Cerberus is associated with the food! =) 5- Cerberus also appears in one of the 12 labours of Hercules. Hercules, who symbolizes the will, have to curb the animal desire to eat all and a lot =)

It's fairly understandable why ancient cultures would find dinosaur remains and other fossils and need a way to explain what they find and put a shape to their unknown fears. It's much easier to stop being afraid of something you understand and have a meaning, explanation for and knowledge about the way they behave and act. Have you seen the skull of a Mammoth? If so you'll see exactly where they get the cyclops idea from.

I wonder if the coat of the Nemean lion was brass or bronze? Since gold was too malleable to be useful as an armor, it would make sense.
@25Erix3 жыл бұрын
Ask yourself how old brass is and that might give you the answer. According to some quick digging, brass was first used in the early Roman Empire. So depending on how old the Twelve Labors are as a story, it's possible for the story to predate brass entirely. Gold is a symbol of wealth so it was likely for aesthetic purposes in regards to the Lion, rather than any use in armor. Its coat being near-impervious could easily be chalked up to the fact it was, at the end of the day, a monster born of primordial giants.
