How does a deeply spiritual offering from India 's poor become a must-have accessory in the salons of Europe?
Every year, millions of Hindus shave their heads in offering to the gods. It' s called tonsuring, and it 's big business. "On average we are getting in excess of five tonnes ," says hair dealer Mayoor Balsara as he finalises his latest purchase from the temples. It 's a classic globalisation story: the sacrificial hair is cheaply sourced in the developing world, and is lining the pockets of those in the west. David Gold is one of them. Each year his company turns over $150 million selling hair extensions sourced from India 's temples. He deflects questions of ethics, arguing that the temples pour profits back into local welfare projects. It 's a dubious claim, and yet many Hindus seem happy for their hair to be spun into gold: " We gave it to God, and it' s come back like this. It' s beautiful. "

As a Black American woman, I'm glad I've never worn weaves, lace front weaves or wigs. I learned over the years how to take care of my hair and what products my hair likes. Seeing this documentary is so tragic. These women are sacrificing their hair for religious purposes but being taken advantage of so that money hungry business people can feed hair to women who have an addiction to wearing other women's hair instead of their own....SHAMLESS!!!

So if the indian people are worshiping their gods for their health wealth prosperity, how does that worship/sacrifice affect affect Christian women in western countries or other christen countries that wear wigs/weaves/extensions especially if they are practicing/ attending church isn't this a falsehood and vanity. I would be wondering if it affects them My heart goes out to the indian population , if hair sellers can make so much profit why isn't their lives being improved drastically...

Jacqueline Eze to some extent it’s hair that’s full of spiritual burdens, they cut it off and sacrifice it to their God for something better of relief. When a Christian woman goes and buys it to wear, she is automatically taking on those burdens spiritually. I for one would never wear another persons hair because spiritually it’s wrong. Also as a Christian woman, God have us all hair it’s up to us how we nurture it to grow.

The women don't want money for their hair. Don't you think you're taking you're views onweave and wig wearing a bit too far. Its not that serious. Besides women in the Philippines and Vietnam do sell their hair for money and poor American women would sell their hair money back in the day. I heard of a lady who is a farmer and she uses shapleys to grow her hair out and she sells it online for about $450.00 regularly. You should also read the story called "The gift of the Magi" by O Henry. Its about some of the same things that's being talked about. Just remember; Hair is as important as you make it!

Jacqueline Eze I wouldn't think a true follower of Jesus would put so much importance on purchasing hair extensions. The Indians who sacrifice their hair are deep believers in God and feel they're doing the right thing for God's favor.. The flashy entertainment/fashion industry has Satanic roots......no pun intended. I'm not here to judge, just learn what goes on in various places in this world. It was an interesting, thought provoking documentry

When we sacrifice our hair at the temple. Its mostly signifies we are letting go of our ego. We don't want any money out of it and we don't care who sells it to whom. Of course it would be nice if the temple authorities use the money coming out of it for better infrastructure or donate it to central government relief fund. But still an Indian devotee would never attach a monitory value to the hair they are giving up in the temples.

mittie rowland - is that your own hair in your pic? Straight, long, shiny .... it really is pretty (foreal I think so) ; unfortunately the worlds opinion of conventional hair beauty today would agree with and not waver from this aesthetic... it has been a trend I've seen since early 2000. Ppl go to great pains to get THAT style of hair just bc society deems it the most aesthetically pleasing. The bar was set and the sheeple wanted to comply. Fortunately, I've begun to notice a change in this and a revert back to natural beauty ,consisting of natural curl, shape, wave, texture etc... Personally, I think it's sexy and I'm glad to see it catching on and 'growing'. But there still exists the residual trend of the ideal "pretty" straight hair.

I would just like to add that it’s not always for the sake of pure vanity. Many women purchase hair toppers and wigs for medical reasons that cause hair loss. I guess you could argue that it’s still vain to be concerned with hair loss, but for women, it’s especially devastating to lose your hair. It affects every aspect of your self confidence. Human hair is the only hair that looks natural, and as a person who benefits from such hair, I can’t tell you how very grateful I am for this option, and to the women whose hair I am now wearing. It’s important that the hair is ethically procured, and anyone who purchases the end product should make every effort to ensure that is the case. I just wanted to point out that it’s not always to have longer hair, such as extensions, many times it’s to have any hair at all.

Say what you want but for me this whole idea of collecting tons of human hair and feeding people's vanity around the globe with it is totally creeping me out. It has something of an uncomfortable science fiction novel for me. And I really can't understand how people can support this. If they are healthy and have normal hair, there is no reason to glue stranger's hair onto your head, the thought alone is totally odd to me. Apart from that this creates another totally unrealistic and artificial beauty ideal that has nothing to do with reality. The pictures of the extension ads the woman showed the pilgrims who gave their hair, were totally artificial and no woman has such hair naturally, it's just not how it's supposed to look but people get used to this hyper-perfect dummy looks and unconsciously start feeling insecure about their natural healthy hair look they have as a given. It's just another perverted chapter of our totally sick times.

This comment really hits home as a Haitian American woman. I grew up all my life with my mother telling me my hair is hard, unmanageable, and ugly. I have kinky hair like most Haitian people. She encouraged me to process my hair chemically and to wear hair extensions. Since I have decided against that my mom judges me every time she sees me. Even judging my decision to wear natural hair to my grandmothers funeral. Of course this is an issue of vanity and a confusion of your outward appearance having anything to do with your inner beauty. But in the case of the Caribbean, many African countries and black US people there is a deep rooted shame that people experience in showing up the way that they are. I’ve felt it and It breaks me heart. I remember as a teenager I got lice and I had to remove my hair extensions for treatment. When I went to school with cornrows I felt so ugly and like everyone was watching me. Even though I just looked natural. It’s taken me a long time to be able to just wear my hair with no shame.

At 13:30 the reporter asks David A. Gold (called father of the hair extension industry) if the Indian women at the temple aren't being exploited? He replies that because they believe they are sacrificing their hair they absolutely wouldn't want money for it. I wonder if the woman who donated her 0.5kg of hair , worth at least, £1200 before processing, knew that the hair would be sold from the temple for western women to satisfy their vanity, would rather just have kept it?? Deceptive & disgusting. How can women do this to each other (with the complicity of greedy men)? That amount would feed her family for 3 years!!

@@kellygreen5367 That is true. But if I am willingly giving hair for free I would rather the wigs go to people undergoing chemotherapy at subsidised rates, rather than see leeches like Gold making huge profits from it. And btw, my parents donated my hair at the very temple this video showed when I was a child.

Now, I decided to keep it long and it will stay that way until otherwise, and I will not take part in said rituals…all of which are harmful, no matter how they’re seen as. as an indian i dont see what all the fuss is about. it wont be a sacrifice of ego or whatever if a monetary value is attached to the hair. We should be glad that a person understood value of something discarded and gave job to someone, so what if he is earning shitloads. As we can see the couple who gave up their hair are fine, they have earned something even this rich guy or the celebrities cant have.

I'd be curious to see the sorting process, seems with all that hair lumped together in a bag it'd be impossible. Is there different values on different colors of hair? For example, say a person wanted blonde or red or light brown-would there be a difference in price between dark hair that was dyed, & hair that was just naturally the color they desired?
