From making sandwiches for needy children to having an older and wiser view of life, this report asks whether they are now coming of age.
New Zealand has one of the highest rates of gang membership per had of population in the world. They have forged a reputation for violence and illegal activities, but many now represent changing times. "We are not exactly the pillars of society. We understand that", explains Jamie Pink, leader of the Tribal Huk gang. But now, a new initiative by gang members is seeing them make and deliver free sandwiches children who would otherwise go without. "It gives you a reason to get up the next day", explains Pink. And while it will be hard to shake off their anti-social image, many like school principal Maria Hamill are starting to come round to the idea: "I think actions speak louder than words."

"Actions speak louder than words". So so true. I got tears in my eyes seeing truly tough men and women that have been around the block a few times, making sure kids have food in their bellies. Not into the gang mentality but I fully understand the social and economic reasons behind their formation and I salute these guys with respect. I am not naive to the knowledge that this gang would indeed partake in other gang "duties", mentality and behaviours but that does not take away the good they are doing in their communities and their effort in reaching out towards better things for themselves and the people around them. Gang behaviour is usually associated with poverty so to me the answers lay in the system that creates these conditions.

I use to starve in school. My parents were awful with money and I would go and scab all the other kids. It was hard and it got even worse when my two baby sisters were born(I love them). I think the problem with these kids comes from parents not being able to budget and run an efficient economy at home. It only takes a few changes in spending from the parents to prevent this. But its such a difficult issue to tackle if you are not motivated. Especially if you have a crap job.

Good hearted people, just what we need to teach our future generation how to look after our own. Best of 2022 to you and your family and extended family. Shame I had not seen this documentary on good ol NZ tv, then some of the nation would be inspired by this. When I was a nipper in the uk, some dinosaur's ago gangs would look after there patch and the people within, same mentality here, can gangs live within the community? YES. All good to have gangs as long as their conflict stays within them, that's when the big man steps in and sorts it out, if it's outside influence try not to involve the innocents, some time's society push's these people towards the gangs, some see them as family and a purpose, the violence has always been there, these BEUTIFUL PEOPLE are changing the mentality.

I just saw on the news a haka performed at a wedding, and I can just about guarantee that it's going to be Tika Tonu. Hopefully I'm right, but this was the first video I saw when I opened You-Tube and I saw the Tribal Huks. Last year I saw the difference they made in a community where many children arrived hungry at school. I'm not here to hold up the gangs as some kind of Robin Hood figures. I've seen first-hand how intimidating some of them can be. However, I've also seen how family-oriented some of these so-called "Outlaws" are, and how concerned many of them are about the growing problem of youth gangs, the type of gangs where a prospect will be told to beat the %&*( out of a random person as part of their initiation. That tells me that many gangs have some concept of what is morally right. I've seen Black Power families supporting members of their whanau at sports tournaments, and chatting happily with the father of another team member who just happens to be a policeman. I've talked to enough children to know that they appreciate the nurturing they have received from some of "these people." Having spent the last 20 years teaching in South Auckland and the poorer parts of the Waikato, I've learned a few things. 1. Don't judge a person by the tattoos on their face or the patch on their back 2. Don't assume that "gangster" means "doesn't know how to care for whanau/aiga. 3. Get to know people before you judge them.... and finally 4. Better not to judge at all.

Frank White I know for a fact gangsters will remove rival drug houses from their territory. But themselves will continue to sell drugs. Small towns are probably where all come from, small towns don't make much money for drugs. It's the larger cities where they make millions. Tell me where does the money come from??? Selling drugs and not from selling stolen property. I know for a fact all major Gangs are in the meth business here in Auckland. Look at all the raids that are linked to gangs and what they are in possession with. It's in black and white literally.

The sad part that is immediately obvious is that most people join these gangs because of lack of acceptance issue they suffer as children. The lack of a united family and single parent households definitely creates a child seeking what they don't have. They then get older and join a gang, they are violent as a way to protect themselves, but they act like this because of the troubles they experienced as a child, it is a way to feel safe and have a "togetherness" feeling they never had when they were young. Now they are older gang members they too have matured, but still seek acceptance from other and IMO is why they are helping the schools. Jamie has a such a great pride in taking the sandwiches to the schools and it is great to see, he is a good man underneath his shadowy past. It is quite sad to see this dynamic happen on such a large scale and I feel sorry for people who feel such a void in their lives that they resort to joining a gang. I hope these older gangs impart their wisdom to the younger generations and begin to heal and repair their family and community pains. The HUK's have done a great thing here and appear to be trying to do good things and I take my hat off to them for choosing what is inside all of us, compassion and caring for others.

I knew a couple that lost their son to a school fight and their son hit his head from a punch and they actually went to court and asked the judge not see that everyone was in the court room because of a tragedy and if he could not send the boy to jail and he could help at their property on the weekends and for as long as the judge felt necessary. Then he sat quite and as he looked up at the parents of the boy who died he had tears in his eyes and said he had never felt the feeling that was all through the court room. He said he would leave it to the parents how long they would need help. Then they started growing fruit trees and planting them in parks close to schools so if any child was hungry they could always go and get something to eat. The boy stayed close by the parents house and every weekend for the 15yrs I lived in that area he would go and pot trees. The sad thing I have heard from volunteers is the council want plant fruit trees because the government here thinks homeless people and kids shouldn’t be able to get free food and if they can’t work to earn money why should they get things free? We need to see people as people not race or religion and realise humanity is being led by our government when it’s humanity that chose the people to help the people and countries grow and stop kids homeless elderly and families wondering if and when they aren’t able to have food on their tables and stop filling the pockets of people that really don’t care or probably need it. I think all of the people involved in the sandwich club are both selfless and honourable your story touched my heart thanks for sharing. I hope the story I shared reaches the hearts of people that have the resources and friends to make a change in someone’s life or many lives thanks to who reads my story

The government keeps people frrom thriving. We need communities to help and support each other. Community farming to make sure everyone gets fed. Making sure people have a home. Education in smaller classrooms as the communities will be smaller to support people. Trading/barter rather than money is the solution. For example: teacher you educate our children and we'll give you food water and electricity. Electrician, you help our homes, we'll give you food water and electricity. Chef, you make our meals and we'll give you food water and electricity. Etc, etc. That way we dont have to pay for things and we get the basics as our right. We dont have to work souless and joy crushing jobs just to survive because our basic needs our covered. Now, for a homeless person it can seem a bit tricky if they dont work. Easy, hey homeless person we see you're struggling, so let us help you with giving food, water and electricity (and a home) and try to help improve your life. Because sometimes, a homeless person just needs help and hope.

Jamie Pink is currently serving a 7 and a Half year sentence for the violent de-patching of his Sergeant at Arms on the main street of Ngaruawahia (Allegedly for selling meth). Rex Timu got a sentence of home detention in 2017 for assaulting his nephew and standing over an associate after the nephew lost a loan for 6.5k that was supposed to be used for the bulk purchase and on selling of cannabis. Since then he has stayed out of trouble and continues with his community activism.

Yes yr feeding them but you are feeding the cycle of violence. Thats what causes all this hunger.

+Alan Boase A gang is a support unit bonded by blood and the patch is a focal point (like a God of a religion) It can remind people that are straying or in doubt of their loyalty just why they are stronger together! A gang with a gOod honest leader is a formidable thing! I almost 99% do not believe this good work would be happening without the bond of the gang and the respect for the leadership that is being shown. And I 100% KNOW, it will not continue if the gang dropped it's identity and purpose... Gangs like this will inevitably bring in new recruits, without this gang that does some good, it could be another gang led by a psychopath! And broken individuals generally stay broken!

I've always had great respect and compasion for gangs and their members. True, some are just moronic violent thugs, but far more are just youths who started off wrong, rebelling against senseless and oppressive authorities. They saw the deceit and hypocricy and prejudice in the system and vowed not to conform. They just gravitated to "clubs" of like-minded brothers and then got trapped and labelled as "outlaws", a downward spiral. Sadly and truthfully, illegality ain't the way to either change the system OR improve the trajectory of their personal lives or their family. Perhaps these wiser elders are beacons of better example to other gangs and young blokes. More than just sandwiches, which is a great cause, these guys should go counselling young offenders against lives of crime. But, THE BIGGEST MISSING FACTOR is how to cater for so many young folks who hate the fucking system and who don't want to join it. An alternative life narrative is needed for many young people innately disillusioned with modern society. My path has been opting out to a self sufficient, hippie type existence. Get off the treadmill, live cheaply, frequent nature, live cleanly (off drugs and grog), work for just enough money to survive moderately. Live and die in peace.
