April 1999
Millionaire Doug Tompkins wanted to save a rainforest, so he went out and bought one in Southern Chile. Many Chileans though are not so keen on his philanthropy and regard him with suspicion.
The self-made millionaire of the Esprit clothing company now languishes in an Eden of lush forest, deep rivers and abundant wildlife. His massive reserve, Pumalin Park, is an oasis of biodiverstiy. Conservative politician Jaime Orpis regards the swath of land controlled by Tompkins as a threat to national security. His reserve is a strategic 100km long corridor from the Argentine border to central Chile. For a nation still on the periphery of economic success having such a staunch anti-developmentalist tying up resources is also deeply irritating. Many would prefer him to take his high ideals back home. Tompkins though, came to Chile with a dream and despite the knocks he's staying until the government agrees to protect his park themselves.

Most of the chileans are deeply grateful to mr&mrs Tompkins for save our nation nature's treasures from destruction. There are some suspicious people... like everywhere else, but they are a minority making noise.

Of course it is your country and you can do what you want with it, but he is only trying to help give futur Chileans a nice place free from factories and electricity plants like they want to put in patagonia already. I've been to Chile 4 times and what you have is very special and it seems like anyone that want to help protect your land there should be welcome, no? no all gringos are trying to take from you.

This interviewer/narrator seems amazed that anyone with money would want to preserve nature. There are far richer people in the world doing their part to destroy the earth as quickly as possible. Give Mr. Tompkins the credit that he deserved.

This is not in fact. Chileans was in favour of Tompkins to 2001, when Chileans Colonizers were expulsed and 2009, when the case of Aisen- Chaiten was relationed to the Jewish plain "Andinia"

the number of Israeli tourists to Chile is 16000 every year(Israel population is 4 millions). Moreover, It is not logical that one man is able to buy these lands which do not bring him income if he does not have support from someone. Believe me, Tompkin is trying to found a Jewish state in South America.

@healtheplanetfirst Do you really buy his story?? so they know how to take care of the eco system , look at all the first world countries, especialy the States, do they look like well protected reservations of natural life? Why do you think they come here, to get what they dont have anymore at their own countries.
