DIVISION OF LABOUR. To the centre of the city in the night waiting for Joy Division. Thursday night & the hordes pour out of the Apollo after Iggy Pops yearly extravaganza & head towards the newest optimistic venue..The New Osbourne Club.Spacious ,seedy...to being perfect. Just a Stones throw away from the deceased Electric Circus. The people pour in expectations run high & the atmosphere is warm. They've come to witness Joy Division the band who.????. to supply the most moving music in the country today, but the bands brilliance tends to be eraticand rarely do they perform to full power. To catch JD when they're peaking is to view rock n roll at its biting best would tonight's crowd be lucky..(...Section 27 & a Certain ratio reviewed .)... The Manc audience have finally begun to enjoy the primal rhythms of this strange band. Visually they still edge far too close to JD for comfort..the drummer Donald Johnson deserves to be heard, their set is promising though hardly stimulating. The same can almost be said of the remarkable Joy Division. Ecstatic receptions aside ,they fail to cash in on the advantages given them by their fanatical following. The set is 90% new material. Without doubt this is a favourable sign & I'm relieved to find the new songs steer clear of that threatening area of self indulgence. They have managed to retain their punchy pressure. However despite a couple of moments of pure nostalgic magic Joy Division are unable to capture the essence of their passion . Ian Curtis ' dance spurts attempt to whip up an atmosphere, but it's not enough .they have for the time being, lost their arrogance, their urgency, their commitment & their essential sense of feeling. They needn't worry ,in fact they always were prone to playing below par gigs at the worst possible time, but in true r 'n'r irony they are forced into an encore situation. They tried to sound full of purpose ,but nobody is perfect. Not even Britain's finest rock band. ( review by Mick Middles -Sounds magazine .1st March 1980)

The Dopenhagen thing is not uncommon. There is a breed of people who are very insecure and try to denigrate anything heartfelt. They tell themselves they could do this if they wanted or write a great novel or be a great painter - but, unlike Curtis and co, they never do it for a string of tenuous reasons and so the bitterness deepens. Worst of all Dopenhagen wasn't even able to take the piss in a funny way so it came across as actually jealous of the people it was mocking. Sorry, Dopenhagen.
