A young man battling with marriage, epilepsy and depression. God rest his soul. He was an amazing talent. The goth scene would of never of existed if it wasn't for Joy Division and their dark lyrics. Ian was a poet in his early education, but the rest of the band thought his lyrics were about common day matters... His lyrics were actually about his suffering as a human being. It is this honesty expressed in his music that he shall never be forgotten.

Epilepsy often suddenly occurs as it did with my brother. One day after climbing a mountain in winter, he had his first attack. Placed him in the recovery position but he smashed his new watch. It was very upsetting to see this but now he is coping well with medication that has fewer side effects. Wish that Ian had held on and survived what is an awful condition to have.

I'm 19 and I was diagnosed with epilepsy last year. Seeing that Ian fought the same condition I have was a terrifying thought at first, but it's oddly turned around and helped me to cope-- the best music being the kind that reminds you that you aren't alone is only a cliche because it's true. I had listened to this song a million times before, but it's taken on a new meaning to me now and become one of the songs closest to my heart. Rest in peace, Ian Curtis. Three things I have to say about this clip: 1. Stephen Morris had incredible stamina. If I tried to play a drum part like that, I'd get cramps. 2. I love the way Bernard and Peter interact with each other and trade off on playing the main riff towards the end. 3. Ian looks so sad. I can't understand how anybody could watch this and think that he's feeling normal. No. You can tell he's not okay just by looking at him.

I'm sure there are other singers with the same kind of energy out there, but I haven't seen them yet. To assume there is only one is just gatekeeping; there are millions of musicians, you never know. One singer I can think of with a similar energy is the lead singer of Swans. There's the live performance of "Beautiful Child". I didn't see similar dancing and the vocals are louder, but the energy I felt watching it was the same I felt watching the performance of "She's Lost Control".

Curtis is to music what Kafka is to literature. Coming from nowhere, without all this education, money, family backround and security. Creating from scratch some of the most impressive works of art ever. I have a lot of respect for musicians and I wouldn't want to live in a world without technical impressive musicians like Coltrane, James Jamerson, Hendrix etc., but what is so special about Joy Division is that none of them was an educated musician, they all just started to become musicians as tweens and after just 2 or 3 years they came up with something like that. That's punk in the best sense of the word. Kafka and Curtis even had similar jobs. She's Lost Control is about one of Curtis' "clients" that had epilepsy and Curtis wrote this song about her before his epilepsy became evident.

Ian Curtis' dancing has always been tremendously upsetting to me and yet intensely captivating and electrifying. I've always seen so much anguish in his movements. He's a completely unique frontman, and a truly tragic story. I can only imagine the countless hours so many of us would have spent listening to more of their music. RIP.

Yes a piece of history. I saw this live (yeah Im an old git). Spellbinding isnt it as Ian Curtis' eyes tell you everything and, in a blink, they tell you absolutely nothing. Tragically brilliant performance.

The way the guitar merges with the bass creates some really dissonant but also really cool chords that really make this song what it is. What a great band and Ian will be sorely missed. Hooky / Morris thought wow - what is going on with his dancing / arms.. When Ian said they just didn't understand, when i would go out there, I would give it everything that I had and then they wanted to go on tour to the usa! You can clearly see his erratic arm movement dancing is almost like pure energy needing to be released and that's how he expressed himself..

His epileptic seizures were the worst kind. He was having 3 to 4 seizures a week. They disabled him. He killed himself the night before his band was to tour in the USA. He knew he couldn't tour health wise, but did not want to let his band down. A few years ago a Dr. looked at his prescriptions and the side effects were sever depression and that lead to his suicide. His seizures were getting worse by the day. They were Longer and more often. Every time the Dr.s gave him a new medicine he was hopeful his symptoms would get better. But they never did. He was depressed because he knew he was slowly dying. The lights and music on stage often caused him to have seizures, these seizures would debilitate him for days.

@@scorchioD BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! Ian was an honor student and he stole prescription meds at 16 from an old folks' home and had to get his stomach pumped after his Dad found him lying on the floor. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! Ian was sensitive to sunlight and his hands would inflame, swelling up red if he was in the sun too long. This isn't a common condition but there are some people around who are sunlight sensitive (though I can't say their hands swell up too.) As if that wasn't enough, he died the same day Mt. St Helens blew up; he died early in the morning before sunrise but it was after the birds woke up so maybe he died 7 - 8 hours before Mt. St Helens exploded and sent so much volcanic ash 40 miles away that towns had to sweep it up for weeks. I don't think I listed it all but when a person gets into the depths Ian Curtis went through, it's just one thing after the other.

Incredible performance, each of the band members are putting so much into their specific instrument, Stephen with his machine-like drumming, Bernard with his steady but important guitar, and Hooky with his ferocious bass playing. It really is amazing to witness. I remember hearing a quote somewhere from Ian saying he gave everything he had when he was up on stage, and he meant it.

fizro yeah it’s weird. He didn’t really need to, but he chose to play using all bar chords where the finger positions were the same the whole time. It probably would have made more sense to like a more localized area for those chores but he just chose to slide up and down the neck lol. He plays in a weird way alright. Looks completely different to the rest of the band when they perform.
