Same.... Emo decades before emo even existed. Back then I tormented myself for not being "normal". Now, I'm so thankful I'm not and that I made it through all the darkness. Could not have done it without Joy Division, The Smiths, bauhaus, The Cure, Cocteau Twins, etc.

Back in the 80s my mum really liked this song. She was not into my music at all generally but she really enjoyed this. I lost her by suicide just over 20 years ago after she had suffered many years of mental health issues. I always think of her when I hear this and have always wondered if she felt connected to the song or some empathy for the singer. I truly feel for all the tormented souls that suffer mental illness and hope that they find happiness.

When routine bites hard, And ambitions are low, And resentment rides high, But emotions won't grow, And we're changing our ways, Taking different roads. Then love, love will tear us apart again. Love, love will tear us apart again. Why is the bedroom so cold? You've turned away on your side. Is my timing that flawed? Our respect runs so dry. Yet there's still this appeal That we've kept through our lives. But love, love will tear us apart again. Love, love will tear us apart again. You cry out in your sleep, All my failings exposed. And there's a taste in my mouth, As desperation takes hold. Just that something so good Just can't function no more. But love, love will tear us apart again. Love, love will tear us apart again. Love, love will tear us apart again. Love, love will tear us apart again.

This song and video captured Joy Division's outward musical ethos perfectly. Four young men, dressed in formal wear in an empty room nearly devoid of color. Peter Hook seeming angry while playing an incredible riff. Bernard struggling to play the ethereal perfectly. Steven hammering a tight, flawless driving beat. And Ian, with an exhausted, but soulful delivery of a beautiful melancholy summary of love that is nearly dead. Aurally captured and enhanced with the musical production talents of Martin Hannet. This is how Joy Division will be remembered.

If any musician deserves a place in heaven, it was ian curtis. He suffered terribly with epilepsy, and was tormented by the heavy, early medicine they used to try treating this horrible condition, and to ian, suicide was eventually preferable to continuing to suffer. He didnt overdose, or lose his life to hedonism. He literally couldnt take the pain any longer. God rest your soul ian Curtis.

@@gabrielceballos8789 he was also allegedly extremely controlling over Deborah by limiting all her contact with men, forcing her to sever all lifelong male friends in her life and being mostly unsympathetic and cruel to her throughout their marriage. But people forget he was just a man, not a good or bad one but a person who was severely tormented in such a short span of life. His suicide monumentalised him as a post-punk icon rather than a complex, flawed human being. Ian deserved better than what happened

But it just makes me feel so much like home. Like sitting with really really close friends together and feeling like a human being experiencing absolute beauty and bliss. To be fair, the post-punk and gothic rock of that time period were major influences on the indie rock scene, and they are influences that continue to be heard in the music of the underground. There's also this solo act who kinda reminds me of Joy Division; it's called Harsh Symmetry, whose style captures the spirit of the post-punk and goth culture.

Atmosphere is more affecting musically, but the lyrics to this are probably the best that Ian Curtis wrote: so much said and conveyed so articulately, and with such economy (which is the essence of poetry, I suppose). It still beggars belief that a working-class twenty-three year old from a backwater town could come up with words as mature and dignified as this. Love Will Tear Us Apart's stately, resigned foreshadowing retains the capacity to plonk you on your backside blinking in wonder every time you hear it.
