Back in the 80s my mum really liked this song. She was not into my music at all generally but she really enjoyed this. I lost her by suicide just over 20 years ago after she had suffered many years of mental health issues. I always think of her when I hear this and have always wondered if she felt connected to the song or some empathy for the singer. I truly feel for all the tormented souls that suffer mental illness and hope that they find happiness.

When routine bites hard, And ambitions are low, And resentment rides high, But emotions won't grow, And we're changing our ways, Taking different roads. Then love, love will tear us apart again. Love, love will tear us apart again. Why is the bedroom so cold? You've turned away on your side. Is my timing that flawed? Our respect runs so dry. Yet there's still this appeal That we've kept through our lives. But love, love will tear us apart again. Love, love will tear us apart again. You cry out in your sleep, All my failings exposed. And there's a taste in my mouth, As desperation takes hold. Just that something so good Just can't function no more. But love, love will tear us apart again. Love, love will tear us apart again. This song and video captured Joy Division's outward musical ethos perfectly. Four young men, dressed in formal wear in an empty room nearly devoid of color. Peter Hook seeming angry while playing an incredible riff. Bernard struggling to play the ethereal perfectly. Steven hammering a tight, flawless driving beat. And Ian, with an exhausted, but soulful delivery of a beautiful melancholy summary of love that is nearly dead. Aurally captured and enhanced with the musical production talents of Martin Hannet. This is how Joy Division will be remembered.

To be fair, the post-punk and gothic rock of that time period were major influences on the indie rock scene, and they are influences that continue to be heard in the music of the underground. [Verse 1] When routine bites hard And ambitions are low And resentment rides high But emotions won't grow And we're changing our ways, taking different roads [Chorus] Then love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again [Verse 2] Why is the bedroom so cold? You've turned away on your side Is my timing that flawed? Our respect runs so dry Yet there's still this appeal That we've kept through our lives [Chorus] But love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again [Verse 3] You cry out in your sleep All my failings exposed And there's a taste in my mouth As desperation takes hold Just that something so good Just can't function no more [Chorus ] Then love, love will tear us apart again Love, love will tear us apart again Then love, love will tear it apart again Love, love will tear it apart again

Atmosphere is more affecting musically, but the lyrics to this are probably the best that Ian Curtis wrote: so much said and conveyed so articulately, and with such economy (which is the essence of poetry, I suppose). It still beggars belief that a working-class twenty-three year old from a backwater town could come up with words as mature and dignified as this. Love Will Tear Us Apart's stately, resigned foreshadowing retains the capacity to plonk you on your backside blinking in wonder every time you hear it.

Even though there's a drone on the tonic note, somehow the song never resolves on the tonic until 2:56. Then it stays resolved, even with some small chord changes around it. A quiet little bit of magic contributing to a very compelling song.

One of the most underrated bands ever. People completely underestimate how much of an influence Joy Division had on music (in all aspects) at the time, even though their tenure was a short one. For example U2 themselves owe Joy Division a lot for their sound. Nevermind other artists and bands of the era.

Joy Division are anything but underrated, they are one of the most iconic influential post punk bands ever. if you think they are in any way underrated then you know nothing about music!
@abcun172 жыл бұрын
@@paulph12002 I meant relatively to their outsized influence they are fairly underrated as most people aren't aware of them. And you could have just replied without being a dickhead. If your knowledge of music is made up of being an arrogant ass, then you may want to reassess that "knowledge".

I totally agree. I hear Joy division in so many of my favourite bands. The impact they had on music is absolutely massive. One of the things that blows my fucking mind with this band is the maturity they had at such a young age. Atmosphere is one of my favourite songs and it sounds like it came from a mind that had been writing songs for decades. It's incredibly elegant and heartfealt songwriting and the world will never be ready to tire of them I think %
