Amazing to think I was at that gig ! JD were contained in a tiny blue circular ring where the acoustics were naff ! Really enjoyed the evening especially as we were lucky to get in ! A big West In Dian chap was on the door being very selective about who was allowed in . As we got closer I recognised him as I’d played cricket against his team the previous year ! My girlfriend at the time was really impressed that we were able to get into the Warehouse ! Happy Days!

Wasn't that with Husker Du as support? I know the Huskers were going to support them on some of their US dates. Thinking about it hurts my heart - what could have been. Can you imagine, seeing JD and an early hardcore thrash-y Husker Du on the same bill? Maybe there's an alternate universe out there where he got proper help after his first suicide attempt, took a break from the band and was rejuvenated following the moderate success of Closer and LWTUA, resulting in a successful and celebrated US tour. This is starting to sound like fan fiction.
@vv2476 ай бұрын
@@snottersofsnot8644 I don't recall if Husker Du was supporting but sounds quite possible they were definitely on the scene then. I was devastated when I heard it on CFNY as a 16yr old kid. I went down to the BASS outlet because I wanted a souvenir ticket at least but the bastards wouldn't give me one.
@snottersofsnot86446 ай бұрын
@@vv247 That's a pity - I'm pretty sure the tickets for the cancelled shows are worth quite a bit nowadays. Bob Mould refers to them being booked to support JD on their tour in his autobiography. Not sure if it was for the whole tour - I think they were just going to do the east coast.

Great effort with the video/audio. We take it for granted these days that this bootleg exists - back in the day, we only had a very poor copy of this source (which some comments here have mistakenly referred to as the "audience tape"). Despite the poor quality, and as much as I love the power of the performances at Bowden Vale, Russell Club and Eindhoven, this tape was always my favourite. This version of The Eternal is my favourite live JD track - when the echo kicks in on "watching them pass like clouds in the sky" it gives me chills, and I only wish they'd used echo on his vocals more often. I was never aware of the Shadowplay bootleg (I'd given up collecting in the 90s) so when it was released officially it was a dream come true. Despite the official release, the Shadowplay bootleg is a better copy - probably one generation up in the stream. Fage did a great job with this - he also did a great job cleaning up the Eindhoven tape.

I was in attendance at this and to say it changed my life in an understatement! Stood there in my 'The Who' t shirt with my mouth wide open, what a fucking gig. Shadowplay has to be the best and most powerful live recording I have ever heard, smashed it. Interestingly, Hooky's version of things that night don't really stack up, I ask Stephen Morris about this on a live 'Ask the Drummer' podcast that he did. Check it out on here somewhere. Stephen is and will always be my greatest ever musical influence, i'm still playing drums now in original bands aged 60 fucking 2 !!

i love listening to gigs where it all goes to shit for a while , reminds me of playing in bands years ago , not every gig is perfect , sometimes shit happens and you have to deal with it , ive played gigs where the monitors didnt work and none of us could hear anything apart from the drums , we got through it , played a gig where the singer asked for more vocal in the monitors please and she decided "fuck this " and turned all the faders up deafening everyone in the venue , it kicked off that night and we were banned from the venue , good times

Went to Raiders in 87 i think, alternative disco, some twat chinned me from the other side of the mosh, fell on my arse and cut my elbow on some broken glass. Looked at my mates who saw it and was pointing to who did it then flew over the top of the pit of people and levelled him. Ended up on Preston station that night in the room with the heater but my head was throbbing by then and couldn`t sleep on my arm. Good times . Came over from Accrington. Also bought some shoe polish from the pub as hash, we were only kids getting into it.

@@eugenemclemmont4045 well Preston was never the high life but there were certainly 'experiences' to be had in that town full of silliness and shenanigans. I never saw any fights in all my years of going out on Preston nights, it was surprisingly peaceful 1988-1991 I thought.
