The causes, consequences and (sometimes eventual) corrections of being overwhelmed (into defeatist negativity) by the very real problems associated with becoming a good painter and in making pictures: doing our work generally.

Constantly seeing the whole picture and working from the outside in, along with patience in doing this, brings joy to me. :) Good to see you both!

Wow, I was overwhelmed to see you again Paul. So thankful to see that you are better. What I enjoyed most is your references to the Bible and the joy of painting and striving to make something beautiful to the best of what you can offer. ❤ Henrietta

Good to see you’re doing better and I hope you get your voice back soon. I’ve just finished reading Benson’s advice to his daughter and Sargent’s advice to his students. This sparked a couple of questions in my head and made me realize that I don’t fully understand the importance of flatness in a picture! Why would flat tones be something to aspire to and pursue rather than stay away from? How can someone like Benson or Sargent advise to make flat tones and at the same time expect depth in paintings? Did Vermeer use flat tones in the face of the girl with a pearl earring? Does Sargent himself end up with flat tones in the faces of his portraits? They don’t seem flat to me! I’ve read somewhere that painters who first train to paint from life end up with flat tones which is certainly what happens with me when I paint from life but I feel that this is a weakness in my paintings not a strength! What am I missing? And thank you both for this much needed video.

@@PaulIngbretson I have indeed! Thank you so much for clarifying the different ways people use the term. I got so much out of that video so I’m feeling that I’ve asked the right question. I reckon I’ll definitely need to watch it several times until I get the whole of it.

So enjoyed this video. Huge impact on me today!!! As a believer there were a few tidbits in this that I felt were there just for me to hear... funny how that works. Thank you so much for posting this.
