Lowell Mason is considered the father of music education in the United States. In 1832, Mason co-founded the Boston Academy of Music, and in 1837, he began teaching music for free in the Boston public schools. Over the course of his life, Mason wrote around 1,600 hymns and tunes, including "Joy to the World," "Mary Had a Little Lamb," "Nearer My God to Thee," and many more.
While the words to the poem "Joy to the World" were written by English hymn writer Isaac Watts in 1719, Mason paired the words with a tune of debated origin in the 1836. Lowell Mason attributed the tune to George Frederic Handel, some argue that traces of the tune appear in his oratorio Messiah, but others see no evidence for this.
