In a book called, The promise land: a novel of Cape Breton, by Bill Conall, this lament by Neil Gow was mentioned. Thankfully, I looked it up and heard this beautiful rendition of his work -Thank you both!!

Went here on a class field trip as a kid in the 90s. So happy to see it's still around, I'll be bringing my kids around to experience it for themselves.

It appears to me that the doodling on the back of the painting of the young girl in satin appears to be a preparation for a painting of a water wheel that would power a grist mill.

I love these videos that welcome the public into the archives and areas that for the preservation of the items would not make it wise to allow visitors into. Thank you for taking us behind the scenes to see that which would typically not be available.

This is a fantastic video! Though, If I may give advice, I would have mentioned the field music (fifes and drums), which were very important and participated in parades during the era. Also, brass bands were militia bands as well. The instrumentation of a militia band could vary. Woodwind bands (with horns and trumpets) were usually referred to as "harmoniemusik," though that name was falling out during the 1830s. Brass instruments would take their precedence in military bands by the 1840s because they projected further than woodwind instruments. I say this just to share the knowledge of music during the era and not pick at anyone. Thank you for an informative video!

As a spinner, I love that you guys have all these wheels and keeping them maintained! I have a 200+ year old great wheel that I need to do some fixes for, as it was just not as well loved as it needed to be. I started spinning in my 20’s and just fell in love. I’m only 39 now, and where I started with a drop spindle, I now have several different types of spinning methods, and weaving looms. If they had taught us how to do stuff like this when we were kids I’d have known at a young age how much I love it. Wouldn’t have wasted decades finding my niche in the world.

A really clear explanation. I remember watching the dam and sawmill built when I worked there. Seeing it run for the first time was very exciting. It's so informative to see three different historic water-power technologies at the three mills that share the millpond.
