You know what you just taught me??? I just learned to make the neckline center with the 1/2" straight center or I get a V neck!!! That has driven me CRAZY!! I actually gave away my Curve Runner on a Christmas Sewing Swap several years ago when I gave up garment sewing. Do you think I got a Thank you? NO. (sigh) Millenials. Anyhoo, I have never in my life seen the calculator used like that to determine distance. Wow. Thank you Joy! You are a gem!

Beautiful job on the new neckline of the dress. It is more flattering to you. Even though many of us have been sewing for decades, it's always nice to see someone taking the time to show others the correct way to do changes. Bless you, you're doing a wonderful job!!!

It's perfect. I really thought the neck was going to big, but you worked miracles on it. I love the dress. Seems like it fits really well, and I love the length. If I could wear the short sleeves, I'd wear that to a wedding I have to go to soon. You're teaching me a lot about making adjustments. I'm really grateful for your videos.

You did such a nice alteration on your neckline. Opening it up like you did makes it less matronly, makes your neck look longer and seems in better proportion with the long length. Great job!

Joy, it has been a year since my husband passed away. It has also been the most difficult year of my life. My Doctor's office had a program they felt I should sign up for so I did. The program was called... Finding 'Joy' in your life. Well, let me tell you there was nothing said about you and there wasn't much 'joy' in the program. I just want you to know I have found more 'Joy' in my life since I started watching your videos. I guess you could say you are the 'Joy' in my life. Thank you. I love the dress and I have to tell you I learn something new every time I watch you sew.

❤🍒 My oldest daughter had a math teacher in 8th grade who was really a difficult teacher for the first week. Many kids were able to transfer out in the first few days. After a week, the teacher became quite reasonable and likeable. It turns out she wanted students who wanted to learn, so she figured whoever was left after that first week were the exceptional ones. My daughter thanked me later for not letting her transfer because she learned to LOVE that teacher and math.

I should probably get that french curve. I have one but I think it's for quilting? It's about half that size and twice as wide. You probably have one just like it 😜 Thanks for the "lower the neckline" lesson. That dress looks unbelievably comfy. I am always amazed at the way you can make some adjustment on the fly and it always turns out beautifully. It is a glorious day here where I live and I have been inside working on doing fit adjustments to a pattern all day. All. The. Live. Long. Day. I swear I am going to lose my religion with this dress. I got the wrong size and missed the sale on Simplicity patterns at Joann's, so I had to size it up my own danged self. Then do an FBA. Then increase the waist. Then do a sway-back adjustment. OMGosh this better be worth it. I'm taking a lunch break on my "lanai" - I have no idea why they call them that here, it's just a screened porch, no need to get all fancy. It's 87 and sunny and the humidity is only 35%! I even thought about bringing my Pfaff out here and doing some sewing. I don't think I will, though. Honestly I want to get that bodice cut out just to see if all these changes work. I've already made 2 test bodices and neither of them fit. Ugh! First world problems!

You are as determined as I am Jen. I'll keep trying until it just is not possible to continue. Then the fabric goes to the Teddy Bear Lady. I was quilting today and made the loooooooooooooooooooongest video. I cut out about 20 minutes of it and I'm uploading it now. I'll try to piece the rest of it together into another video tomorrow. It was me quilting those house placemats.

I ordered both of those books yesterday for 99 dollars. Thanks for the tip. I have a Baby Lock Solaris and I traded in my baby lock Ellisamo and my Destiny for the Solaris. Love the Solaris for embroidery. Then I went to the sewing store and bought the Bernina 570Q because it had the Dual Feed foot. Plus the stitch regulator , which I haven't tried yet. The only thing I don't care for with the Bernina is it doesn't have a manual pressure foot to go along with the automatic one. Can you do a video on how to make the neck line smaller after you made your top. If I bend over you can see my belly button. BTW you made me laugh so hard again today. Hi Joy, just a hint. I notice that occasionally hesitate when giving the content of your fabric when using from your stash. I, like you purchase on line, and had the same problem. I now save the content sticker(really like the ones from Fabric Mart) and after washing the fabric and putting it on fabric boards attach the sticker to the fabric before storing it on my shelf. This has helped me know what I'm sewing with immediately when choosing fabric for a garment. Hope you like this hint. Really enjoy your channel.

So figuring out that width for the new neckline. Instead of adding 1/2 and 3/8 and then doubling it. Double them before adding together. 1/2 + 1/2= 1 and 3/8 + 3/8 = 6/8 which is 3/4. The band should have been 1 3/4 inches wide. Guess what my day job is? Yep, a math teacher. This is a perfect answer to when my kids ask when am I ever going to use this.
@Joy4650B

Absolutely. I figured it was 1 3/4 inches right after my comment. I used 2" anyway. A little extra doesn't hurt in that case. Thank you for the simple way to figure it!!! I will certainly do it from now on.

Great adjustment Joy, I just bought a Bernina 475 QE they are having a 20% off sale till 4/30. Although I don't have time to quilt I bought it mainly b/c I'm sick of the cheaper machines I have going on, the mechanical Janome, a Singer 740? I got from HSN, and a very limited Brother. I do have a Juki 1181N , a walking foot industrial for purse makingwhich is my favoriate , but my Husqvarna Lily keeps needing frequent servicing, (after 20 years) I thought this Bernina may last awhile (Imainly got this model b/c it has a 1/4'" foot), etc. Have been doing some sewing for my 3 and 5 year old granddaughters, and just finished a pattern for a jean jacket for myself (from the Islander sewing patterns) from Blueprint along with video. Was pleased with fit except for shoulders, don't know why I didn't adjust. Was fun to use jean jacket buttons on it, though. Can't wait for the Bernina. Do have a Bernina embroidery, but haven't used that in a while, Well thought I would share. I know you have some beautiful machines. It is so enjoyable to sew, takes away the blues, people you miss, the whole virus issue. Keep those videos coming!.

There are things I don't like about my Berninas, but I like them better than the other brands I have used. They are quality and the dealers are usually very helpful. Thanks Joy for your step by step. I have a question about the 7/8's for calculating a binding for the neck. I got the standing upright neck binding instructions, but the 7/8's has got me stymied!!! Can you explain to my mathematically challenged mind please?
@Joy4650B
@Joy4650B 4 жыл бұрын
I wish I would have explained that. It is just what I learned from other teachers. You MUST have the band SMALLER than the neckline or the neckline will sag and bag away from your neck.

@@Joy4650B Yes, I know that makes so much sense. I've done bindings with woven fabric and it's not as good as with stretch fabric, but how do you calculate the length needed for the binding for stretch fabrics? You took the measurement of the neck, then you multiplied by 7? Why? And then you divided by 8. What does the 7 stand for and what does the 8 stand for? It's probably something simple and I will laugh at myself afterwards for not figuring it out. I thought dividing the 4 points was great....I have been doing it by shoulder seam instead of 4 equal points with stretch fabric. I will change doing it the 'old' way and make sure I do it your way. It makes it lie so nicely against the neck and shoulder the way you do it.

love your tutorials they are so helpfull but I'm not sure why you used 7/8 on on that calculation ? The dress is very cute. Had some good laughs to day with the video.

You have to reduce the band. It cannot be as long as the neckline is or it will sag and bag.

@@Joy4650B I understand the length of 29.5 inches but then you multiplied by 7 and divided by 8 I don't understand what the 7/8 is
@Joy4650B
@Joy4650B 4 жыл бұрын
@@robincook4349 You take 7/8 of the FULL neckline length, and that gives you the length of the band you are applying to it. The band has to be shorter than the neckline. 7/8 is the magic number.

What kind of fabric is the pants outfit you have on and where did you get it? Love that big flower and how it works on the pants. Also the lower neckline is way more flattering on you.

Thank you Sharon for the compliments! I made the outfit with the big flowers. That is why it is not hemmed or finished at the neck and armholes yet. I used a wide leg pant pattern and Peggy Sager's tank top pattern to make it. I bought the fabric long ago. I'm sure it is all gone. It was probably from Fabric Mart Fabrics as that is where most of my fabric has come from for the last two years.

I just had 2 necklines grow and grow with a jersey knit. That was before I could even get it stay stitched. If I can save the garments the next time I am going to use fusible staytape as soon as each piece is cut out. I am cursing myself for buying so much of this crap.

By "crap", you mean the jersey knit? It really is great to wear once you learn how to tame it. Try cotton knits. They are much nicer to get along with. They do not stretch as much though.
