After a week, the teacher became quite reasonable and likeable. It turns out she wanted students who wanted to learn, so she figured whoever was left after that first week were the exceptional ones. My daughter thanked me later for not letting her transfer because she learned to LOVE that teacher and math.

I should probably get that french curve. I have one but I think it's for quilting? It's about half that size and twice as wide. You probably have one just like it 😜 Thanks for the "lower the neckline" lesson. That dress looks unbelievably comfy. I am always amazed at the way you can make some adjustment on the fly and it always turns out beautifully. It is a glorious day here where I live and I have been inside working on doing fit adjustments to a pattern all day. All. The. Live. Long. Day. I swear I am going to lose my religion with this dress. I got the wrong size and missed the sale on Simplicity patterns at Joann's, so I had to size it up my own danged self. Then do an FBA. Then increase the waist. Then do a sway-back adjustment. OMGosh this better be worth it. I'm taking a lunch break on my "lanai" - I have no idea why they call them that here, it's just a screened porch, no need to get all fancy. It's 87 and sunny and the humidity is only 35%! I even thought about bringing my Pfaff out here and doing some sewing. I don't think I will, though. Honestly I want to get that bodice cut out just to see if all these changes work. I've already made 2 test bodices and neither of them fit. Ugh! First world problems!

Hi Joy, just a hint. I notice that occasionally hesitate when giving the content of your fabric when using from your stash. I, like you purchase on line, and had the same problem. I now save the content sticker(really like the ones from Fabric Mart) and after washing the fabric and putting it on fabric boards attach the sticker to the fabric before storing it on my shelf. So figuring out that width for the new neckline. Instead of adding 1/2 and 3/8 and then doubling it. Double them before adding together. 1/2 + 1/2= 1 and 3/8 + 3/8 = 6/8 which is 3/4. The band should have been 1 3/4 inches wide. Guess what my day job is? Yep, a math teacher. This is a perfect answer to when my kids ask when am I ever going to use this.

Great adjustment Joy, I just bought a Bernina 475 QE they are having a 20% off sale till 4/30. Although I don't have time to quilt I bought it mainly b/c I'm sick of the cheaper machines I have going on, the mechanical Janome, a Singer 740? I got from HSN, and a very limited Brother. I do have a Juki 1181N , a walking foot industrial for purse makingwhich is my favoriate , but my Husqvarna Lily keeps needing frequent servicing, (after 20 years) I thought this Bernina may last awhile (Imainly got this model b/c it has a 1/4'" foot), etc. Have been doing some sewing for my 3 and 5 year old granddaughters, and just finished a pattern for a jean jacket for myself (from the Islander sewing patterns) from Blueprint along with video. Was pleased with fit except for shoulders, don't know why I didn't adjust. Was fun to use jean jacket buttons on it, though. Can't wait for the Bernina. Do have a Bernina embroidery, but haven't used that in a while, Well thought I would share. I know you have some beautiful machines. It is so enjoyable to sew, takes away the blues, people you miss, the whole virus issue. Keep those videos coming!.

Thanks Joy for your step by step. I have a question about the 7/8's for calculating a binding for the neck. I got the standing upright neck binding instructions, but the 7/8's has got me stymied!!! Can you explain to my mathematically challenged mind please?
@Joy4650B4 жыл бұрын
I wish I would have explained that. It is just what I learned from other teachers. You MUST have the band SMALLER than the neckline or the neckline will sag and bag away from your neck.
@noreenskousen19054 жыл бұрын
@@Joy4650B Yes, I know that makes so much sense. I've done bindings with woven fabric and it's not as good as with stretch fabric, but how do you calculate the length needed for the binding for stretch fabrics? You took the measurement of the neck, then you multiplied by 7? Why? And then you divided by 8. What does the 7 stand for and what does the 8 stand for? It's probably something simple and I will laugh at myself afterwards for not figuring it out. I thought dividing the 4 points was great....I have been doing it by shoulder seam instead of 4 equal points with stretch fabric. I will change doing it the 'old' way and make sure I do it your way. It makes it lie so nicely against the neck and shoulder the way you do it.

I just had 2 necklines grow and grow with a jersey knit. That was before I could even get it stay stitched. If I can save the garments the next time I am going to use fusible staytape as soon as each piece is cut out. I am cursing myself for buying so much of this crap.

By "crap", you mean the jersey knit? It really is great to wear once you learn how to tame it. Try cotton knits. They are much nicer to get along with. They do not stretch as much though.
