Here's the world famous and highly acclaimed American Mezzo Soprano Joyce Didonato giving her definitive performance of the American Folk song classic Shenandoah on the BBC Andrew Marr Show Last Sunday.
"Oh Shenandoah" (also called simply "Shenandoah" or "Across the Wide Missouri") is a traditional American folk song of uncertain origin, dating to the early 19th century.
The song appears to have originated with Canadian and American voyageurs or fur traders traveling down the Missouri River in canoes, and has developed several different sets of lyrics. Some lyrics refer to the American Indian chief Shenandoah and a canoe-going trader who wants to marry his daughter. By the mid 1800s versions of the song had become a sea shanty heard or sung by sailors in various parts of the world.
The song is number 324 in the Roud Folk Song Index.
Joyce DiDonato (born February 13, 1969) is an American operatic lyric-coloratura mezzo-soprano[1] notable for her interpretations of the works of Handel, Mozart, and Rossini. She has performed with many of the world's leading opera companies and orchestras and in 2012 and 2016 won the Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Solo.

She's a mezzo soprano with a huge range - but a mezzo, not a soprano...

DIANA FROM MADRID are you saying sopranos are better? Or that she should not sing this?

Annemieke : Absolutely not, to both questions. She sings it divinely, as I would expect, and there's no way you can say that a soprano is necessarily better or worse than a mezzo; that depends on the individual and/or their interpretation of the work in question. The type of voice you have depends on its "colour", basically where it sits most easily. You can tell a mezzo from a soprano, as a rule of thumb, when each singer has to make a "nice" sound at either end of their range, high or low, but of course it's much more complicated than that.! This song in this key makes no such demands on either type of voice. Nothing wrong with that! Joyce is magnificent, as always, and long may her career last.
