Why are people upset about this? If there's a respectable way to go about something, that was it. He shook the guy's hand for fuck's sake.

This dude probably saw so much shit on tour.. If you follow his tweet he saw girls getting concussions, broken noses, etc. from stagediving. To be honest he probably could have gone about saying what he said in a different way, but it's not like he was a dick about it. He shook his hand, and he said "please don't do that again." He probably just snapped. You were not in his shoes, so to say "Fuck you Joyce Manor, you should break up" is just fucking stupid. If I was in the singers shoes I just would have went up to the dude after the show and apologized and given him a free T-shirt or something. I respect what he did to be honest.

As a girl who consistently attends shows, I DO NOT expect special treatment just because I have a vagina. If you don't wanna get hurt, you should have the common sense to stand somewhere besides the fucking front. Stagediving/crowdsurfing/moshing is an expected part of a fucking show. The fact that men like the lead singer of Joyce Manor think they are doing me a favor by pulling shit like this, makes me pretty angry. It makes it harder for females in this music scene to be taken seriously which is, very unfortunately, difficult enough as it is. So yeah no f this dude. I can take care of myself thanks.

Barry is a really good hearted person. I've met him a numerous amount of times and he always is extremely kind towards everyone. I've seen Joyce about 4 times and their shows have gotten crazier to the point where it's complete chaos. This venue is beyond small for any of that I mean come on, it's common courtesy towards everyone around you. Don't hate on someone for simply caring about their fans.

Then why go to a punk show. There is literally a trillion other hobbies that don't include this kind of crowd reaction, why choose the one where people jump off stage. Its literally like joining the NFL but complaining about how much you hate being tackled and lashing out on someone for tackling you

I see nothing wrong with what Barry did. It's his place as the band's frontman to speak against things he doesn't want to happen at his shows. If he doesn't want someone to stagedive onto a tiny girl in the front of the crowd, then he has the power, right, and responsibility to tell people not to do that. Also, it's nice to see someone in a band speak up and take action against something they're against instead of just making a blanket statement at the start of the show and then ignoring it if it happens.

While I agree with you, I don't think that stopping mid-song and having the guy up on stage to call him out was necessary. She was in the part of the crowd where stage diving is inevitable, after all.

You guys are taking so much offense to him reprimanding him on stage when all it was, was a bit embarrassing for the guy. They shook hands and the stage diver went back to the crowd. Barry was polite about the thing. Also, I wouldn't want someone 200 pounds landing on me if I was a 5'2 110 pound person either.

To be honest Barry is a fucking saint. When I went to see this band called Shannon and the Clams some tall ass guy stage dived and fell right on top of me and I fell into the middle of the pit (I weigh 97 pounds) and I ended up having two broken ribs. Personally, I think that it's great he's doing that shit because he's not wanting his fans to get hurt. People have died in shows and concerts because of that shit so this shit is so fucking punk of them.

I love joyce manor. There one of my favorite punk bands. The guy (stage diver) was cool, said sorry, and had a great time. I say this as a musician myself , I love stage diving crowd surfing moshing the whole 9 yards you name it I love it . But as a musician I have to say you have to respect his choice he's probably not against stage diving or nothing they even said it " we love crazy crowds" but the guy jumped on a group of small girls but either way you have to respect his choices is he doesn't like crowd surfing or stage diving respect the guys choice and just don't , yes I know he got mad and shouldn't have put the guy on blast the way he did but we all make mistakes you don't have to like this band but if crowd surfing and stage diving are the only reasons you like a band really you need to find new reasons

What I can't wrap my head around is the fact that the singer more than likely ruined the experience of one single fan of theirs who was obviously stoked to be there because he did one thing that the singer didn't like, yet something that is almost guaranteed to happen at punk/emo shows. If the smaller people really had a problem I'm sure that they could defend themselves. This is bullshit. Never even got into this band but all respect lost.

People are overreacting. He simply made the point that you have to be considerate about other people at shows. If you're 10x bigger than most of the people in the crowd, why would you stage dive if they probably won't be able to support you??? And for those of you saying that this is what "punk shows are like", get over yourselves. Yes you can get all hyped up about the music, but think about people around you. People that intentionally do something harmful to others at a show are ruining this scene.

Apparently Barry has been telling people before shows now that he doesn't want to see anyone stage diving. If the crowd doesn't listen then who's fault is it really? They did take it one step further by publicly shaming him, but he levelled with the guy at the end instead of going more overboard. He wants people to have a good time and not get hurt.

Stage diving is pretty dangerous regardless. A kid went to the hospital doing that at a Miss May I show. Everyone becomes responsible for catching a person diving off stage solely for his/her enjoyment. The majority of the people at shows like this usually enjoy pushing and jumping around and what not because its not as if someone is guaranteed to get hurt. But I feel like every time someone stage dives, someone is always on the receiving end of a kick in the head or an excessive amount of weight abruptly thrown on top of them. I mean it might be fun for people engaging in the act itself because they're caught most of the time, but it could potentially make the vast majority not stage diving pretty uncomfortable. He probably did go about confronting this issue the wrong way, but I'm sure it wasn't his intention to demean anyone in the first place.

I fucking love Joyce Manor, and though I've only seen them live once so far, I've been a fan for a long while. And yeah, it's kind of dumb to not have stage diving at such a super high energy show where you play songs noticeably faster than the already super fast studio versions. However, it's still completely up to the band. The way Barry, Matt, Chase and Jeff want to control their shows is totally justified and I find it respectable that they want their audience to be safe and have a good time doing so. It's kind of hilarious how stupidly pretentious some of you guys are with your "fuck everyone, if you don't want to get your skull crushed in don't be near the barrier" rhetoric. And yeah, Barry did go about calling the dude out in a douche-ish way, but it's extremely forgivable, as is the stage diver for stage diving. (The dude even said sorry.) It's in the moment, he's out of breath, and he's thinking on his toes when someone does something like that. It's useless arguing over something as simple as this, I just thought I'd add my two cents.

I like stage-dives too but it's not like stage-dives are ALWAYS a good idea under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Probably only people at this show (or even only people near the front) can justly evaluate if Barry made a good call. I imagine that he did because he could see what was happening pretty well.

I used to not be against stagediving until my friend got her piercing ripped off at a show. Made us miss the last songs while we had fucking travelled to another country for it. As for me, screaming the lyrics, jumping around and moshing are already more than enough energy shared with the band and the crowd without hurting anybody.

He shook his hand afterwards in a "no hard feelings" gesture, handled the situation like a gentleman. I don't see the humiliation part. But Americans tend to be oversensitive about how you approach them, so no matter how polite your gonna be a "please don't do that anymore" even said extremly polite, might hurt their feelings. Don't get me wrong, I've travelled across America and I have a lot American friends who are good willed, smart, articulate people, so that excludes me from being racist. But from what I've experienced this is how it goes. And it's not their fault, it's the agressive, not forgiving any mistakes, American culture they been brought up in plays the main factor. But on the other side this mentality inspired a lot of creativity and beautiful things that made impact all around the world. So there are up's and down's of it. But the "not so good" part of it inspires this senseless gossiping and shit talk, which is the part that I facepalm myself and it makes me sad, not even mad, just sad... (i'm not going to reply to trolling, hate speech cause it's wasting time which those kinds of people are not worthy of.) Have an awesome week, everyone ;)

You're all so concerned about needing to be so punk and hardcore and having a great time, but if you want to stage dive and be violent then do it at another show. Obviously you go to a show you can't expect to leave in the same condition you came in be that you're sweaty and possibly bloody. But JM is a great band and they do not agree with violence so have some respect for the bands wishes, if you don't like it don't go.

Some people might like to be close to the front without having giant idiots jumping on top of them. Stage diving is pretty stupid. But I'm also not part of this "scene" so what do I know anyway. Also saying that these things are expected is stupid. Sure, the majority of the people there may understand what's going to happen, but some people may not know.
