Thank you so much for being honest. I watch so many KZbin homeschool videos that are so regenerated and scheduled - and maybe they really are THAT out together, but seeing someone be raw and honest about these things is so helpful and honestly such a stress reliever to know I’m not the only one ❤️

Thank you! I feel like a lot of homeschool advice is meant for type-A moms, such as "don't stress over checking all the boxes" and "go at your own pace", and while those things are true I think I tend to err on the side of maybe being too laid back, so I needed the perspective you shared in this video. One of my daughters is a procrastinater like me, and the other will actually ask to do school and remind me about subjects we still have to finish 😅

Good tips👍 I am fairly consistent, but I sometimes feel like im not consistent enough, .... Because i compare myself to others. .... yep. I plan out the whole year, not in detail but basics. Sometimes, I erase ALOT and I've learned thats ok. I will write in my planner why I changed something or jot things I'd like to do, or add vocabulary on the fly, and I have a record of it, which I love. (I know thats not for everyone). My daughter thinks is crazy how much I write in that planner spiral. I feel like im getting better at homeschooling by being willing to change things and seeing patterns through this kind of journal planning. We tend to want to skip days during last week of the six week units. This is that ancy-ness before a known holiday or break. I just plan for that and we do school, but just the basics of what we need to finish. That last week includes school 2 tests per unit, but the rest of the week is " not regular school" , ya know, a movie, field trip, life skills, and something fun that relates educationally. I certainly do count it as school.

I can totally relate to what you’re saying. There’s a balance, thorough. I’ve skipped days for whatever reason…..when it’s bc you just want a lazy day….maybe not the best example. 😜 but if you’re skipping bc life is literally happening….somebody outside your fam needs you, a spontaneous day trip comes up, … we know what’s legit and what’s not. So consistency and also grace! Yes!! So many things you said, I was like….”yep!! I’ve been there! I’ve said that!” 😂 (honestly, consistency is why I joined classical conversations for so many years, bc I had to be in order to not embarrass myself on the weekly community day - so adding in things that force you to be consistent, help! Like getting a workout partner….another thing I need, but it always helps!!)

This is so good. Last year I worked on consistency too and it was helpful. I still had some rough days where my 10 year old fought me but I held the line and I think this year will be different. The block scheduling helped a lot. Although I didn't do that for the afternoon so maybe this year I can work on that. I need to block out time for rest for myself. I found myself having so much to do once we were done with lessons. Lots to pray about. We start next week. Praying all goes smoothly and Holy Spirit led.🌻

@bethanyhall15242 жыл бұрын
@@JoyfulNoiseLearning Praying for your free time! It's so important and I read it helps with cortisol levels (stress) to read, or walk, or something for yourself. I don't get it everyday but I work hard to find a good 30 minutes or so of quiet. So far our routine is ok. It's different from last year because my oldest is doing different things and more work. Our flow seems consistently inconsistent. Weird, but it seems fine. The consistent thing is Bible and then I work with my 1st grader while my 5th grader does independent work. I check in on her after I'm done with him. It's funny how this year's routine developed on it's own. The one thing I'm loving that was unexpected is my daughter (5th grade) is taking charge of her education and is so independent this year. I'm really impressed with her.♥️

I'm with you on the curriculum switching. My opinion is that if your child was bored and just going through the motions of the curriculum and not engaged, then a switch should help. Keep in mind what your goals are for your homeschool. What is most important? Using one curriculum all year and finishing it because it is cheaper and makes you feel like a good teacher or keeping subjects engaging and meeting your child's unique needs? A lot of curriculum is boring, and creative teachers and students have trouble sticking with it all year. Schools don't have a choice. but we do. Many great teachers supplement and some barely use their required textbooks. Finishing a book a year doesn't necessarily mean success. Switching a curriculum doesn't mean that you are a quitter. You didn't quit math, etc. You changed strategies. I have a new theory that to prepare for a world of constant changes, it is an asset to
@JoyfulNoiseLearning2 жыл бұрын
Oh, my! I love this perspective! And I totally see what you are saying here. And actually I DO totally agree that there is a time and place to switch curriculum. I know that in this video it may have come across that I meant we should always "finish the book". Actually I do agree that being adaptable and flexible is good, but what I was hitting on in this video is that there is a time and a place to work on discipline and not switch so much. Some of my kids benefit okay from switching, but I do have one that really THRIVES on consistency and routine, and he's definitely challenged my methods. Again, I love your perspective. I think it's the other side to this coin 💖

Thank you so much for sharing this was helpful! I find I struggle with letting my kids feelings and mine be in charge of decisions sometimes. Is there more you can give advice or wisdom on how to overcome that? Also, I like the idea of block scheduling but do you give your kids brain breaks during the school block (like short play time or music videos)?
@JoyfulNoiseLearning2 жыл бұрын
Love these questions! For the Block Question: YES! Our "blocks" aren't actually as strict as this video made it sound, lol! So, within each block there is also flexibility. That's when you can use your adaptability muscle and gauge your kids on what they need. So you can throw in brain breaks, play break, etc when you think like they need it, OR you can think through your day and anticipate when they normally needs those breaks and put them in your routine. I actually do play/brain breaks in between our blocks and that has helped tremendously! As far as the feelings being in charge, that's a tough one. I have been reading a lot of books that have encouraged me in that. I have also done a lot of courses with Mystie Winckler from Simply Convivial. She has encouraged me SO much in this area. I will try to get back to you with a book list. :) The two books that comes to mind easily is "You Who" by Rachel Jankavich, and "Suffering is Not for Nothing" by Elisabeth Elliot. I hope this helps!

Oops! I hit post too soon. My theory is that in a world of constant changes, it is an asset to be able to do things multiple ways and learn new systems easily. I'm not saying that every family needs to switch curriculum frequently, but sometimes us creative types are teaching our children valuable skills through our outside the norm ways.
