Joymoti's tale of sacrifice - A visit to the historic Joysagar Lake
Joymoti suffered relentless physical and mental torture for 14 days straight but never for a moment her love for her husband and country wavered. Rather she chose to endure till she breathed her last on 27 March, 1680 AD. Her Son to honour and commemorate built the massive "Joysagar lake" in 1734 AD at the very spot where Joymoti was interrogated and held her ground till the last dying moments.
Her heroic sacrifice continued to inspire generations of young men and women to be resilient in the face of trying circumstances. As a matter of fact, the first Assamese feature film was "Joymoti" made in 1935 by the revered Assamese film industry icon Jyotiprasad Agarwala.
With splendid views of the lake, euphony of birds chattering and flying across in complete abandon, impressive foliage of the trees, Joysagar lake always has a serene calming affect. While walking on the pier in a slow wavering gait lost in myriad thread of thoughts, Joymoti's inspiring tale also crosses my mind for a few seconds.
