Hey guys, if you would, please take a few minutes and watch this very educational video from my shopping experience at Macy's department store the other day.
If you want to learn how to give helpful directions to someone who is blind, in this video you will see/hear Real life examples of things not to do and things you should do in those types of situations.
Video description… In the first part of the video you'll hear me ask a sales associate for directions to the elevator. Listen to her response! She gave me directions that were not possible for a completely blind individual to understand. Next, you'll see/hear a very polite customer who offered me assistance to the elevator. Then, after Antonia and I found our way out of the elevator and downstairs on the main level, you will see/hear other individuals who tried to give us helpful directions to where we were wanting to go. Some of the directions were very helpful and others were not.
Let me just say, when you are helping someone who cannot see anything, words like "over there", "on the back wall", or "Go straight and turn right", are just not detailed enough for a blind person to understand.
Remember, if you are completely blind, it is very easy to be disoriented, especially if you are in an unfamiliar place, that is why it is very necessary to give the blind individual orientation to the area when giving detailed directions.
PS. To truly understand what I'm talking about, you need to watch the entire video. If you have any questions after watching this video on how to appropriately assist the blind, please feel free to comment Below. And I believe I can speak for everyone in the blind Community when I say… If you do not know how to help or give us assistance, there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking. In fact, if I were you, that would be the best place to start! Thank you :-)

I want to add a few tips on how to give verbal detailed descriptions to a blind individual in case you find yourself needing to assist someone like me. So many of you have asked what is the correct way to guide if you can’t personally guide someone to their destination yourself. Hopefully the answer below will give you a better idea, I so appreciate all the interest thousands of you have been sharing with me and wanting to know the appropriate way to help the blind. In addition, I am also linking a list I created to help you understand the appropriate way to guide someone who is blind and visually impaired. My top seven tips! I love to hear your feedback! PS. My beautiful Antonia Hope you’ll see in this video passed away recently, if you go to mid December 2018 on my channel, or go to my playlist “my first guiding angel Antonia Hope“, you will see her last moments before my angel went to heaven! She is now my guiding angel for sure, and in case you’re wondering, God has blessed me with a new guiding angel on earth named Arabella Faith! Even though I am missing my Toni girl more than words can say, she is in a better place, she will forever live on in my heart, and through my videos for many years to come! Using verbal descriptions are awesome! When you give detailed descriptions, it helps so much. For instance, you’re going to head down this hallway directly in front of you, go about 20 feet until you here the escalators. When you hear the escalators you are going to turn right, walk another 10 or 15 feet, the women’s clothing department will be on your right. You will know you’re in the women’s clothing department at that point when you walk from tile to carpet. But let me also add, in a large department store like Macy’s, too many descriptions in addition to what I described above, with more turns, more steps, more landmarks, can be completely confusing, disorienting, and overwhelming to understand. If you know that the destination the individual is trying to reach is too far away from where you are, if you can’t personally guide the individual, please do your best to find someone in the store who can. Be assertive with helping the individual find assistance. Your kind service will be greatly appreciated by the individual for sure! 💛 facebook.com/651792834911143/posts/2164229400334138?sfns=mo

I was wondering, even though you’re a KZbinr, so that’s why you record yourself, Do other people that are blind or do you, record where they’ve walked, and revisit their recordings so that they can get their sense of direction again? I know I have bad memory so if I was blind I would need to go back to a store many many times to get an idea of where things are located. So I was wondering if recording is helpful for that purpose???

Nice video. Amazing, beautiful, brilliant dog you have! You seem like such a sweet person too. But I was wondering, do you tell people that you're blind when you first ask for directions? I didn't hear you ask the cashier. She may have walked you there herself, or have gotten another employee to walk with you.

That’s why I memorized turns. I’m not completely blind, but it is hard to see. I get to go into my school early to learn my way. I can’t see the signs like “ 400 “ and the arrow pointing. The first few weeks of school I had to veer off and get close to the signs. I had constant anxiety because i could be goof to be wrong way and I wouldn’t be able to figure it out until I’m at the door.

Mars Pikapy in most shops dogs are not allowed (at least in my country) so having a guide dog would be a dead giveaway of a disability or condition. Different types of guide dogs also have slightly different vests/equipment. Her guide dog had a handle on its back. That would be different to a guide dog that helps with anxiety or other disorders. Also, if you can see their eyes you would see that they probably aren’t trained on your person, but rather have a spaced out look. Not trying to pick a fight, I’m just sharing my observations

What if someone made an earpiece that could do that, so you'd basically just listen to the directions, given in angles and distance?

Helena Hades I feel like in school (physical education or health) it should be taught how to give directions to a blind person. In my PE class we had a unit where we were put in pairs, and every day we would switch off from wearing a blackout blindfold or being the person giving directions to our temporarily blind partner. It was hard at first, but it was easy enough to grasp. There are multiple ways to direct a blind person even if they don’t have a guide dog, you just have to present options to said blind person if they prefer one option more than the others.

Emily Hutchins I agree, I see some people trying to defend her saying that she just deals with rude customer that’s why she’s rude but that logic is so flawed. I’ve worked in retail and unless the customer is rude to me first I always try to be polite and kind, you never know how a persons day is going and you have the opportunity to make them happy in some way why not try? When I was having especially tough days I just pretended that the customer was my mom (kinda weird to say lol) so I still remained as nice as possible.

@@flyingpsych91 when I worked in retail, I saw multiple service dogs nearly every work day. On a recent trip to the airport I saw about 10 service dogs. I believe they were travelling to or from the same place, possibly as part of their training, but you're off the mark if you think the most guide dogs a person working in a mall might see is 2-3 a month. Of course, seeing actively working guide dogs is not as common as seeing any service dogs, but without being told it's not that easy for any random person to tell the difference. Regardless, it's true that her customer service skills were lacking, and it's unfortunate that you've had to deal with that sort of attitude.

I remember a blind man called out to me and my bf and at first. A simple, “Hello?? Somebody there? Hello? I just need a little help.” I almost kept going cause there’s a lot of crazy people in the area so it didn’t seem like a good idea to respond, but I’m a sucker for helping people so I looked over quickly and noticed his big shades and red extended cane. I was like, “Oh! Hi! Yes? What can I help you with?” feeling bad that I almost didn’t say anything. He wanted to know if he was close to 7/11 or not (he was but it was on the other side of a metal fence that separates the different parking lots). I was going to explain where to go but I thought about how dumb I’d sound and then I figured, I don’t mind helping so let’s just take him there. I said, “We can walk you there if you’d like.” He was surprised, “Oh? Really? That’d be so nice/wonderful.” You could heat the relief and happiness in his voice. I offered my arm for him to hold and he held onto it and we slowly and carefully made our way to the 7/11. My bf and I took him through the lot (cause people just blow right through there and don’t watch for others ever :(( )and to the sidewalk that led him up to the door and finally, we are at the doors for 7//11. We tell him. He feels around with his cane then he figured out where it was and he thanked us and we said you’re welcome and we were happy to help (cause we truly were :)) ) And he went inside and we left for home feeling good about helping someone out. Now someone might say WHat iF HE Was A faKe? Eh Doesn’t matter to me. Regardless of who he was or if he was blind or not, I can at least say that I decided to help someone and did. Not for goody points but because it’s the right thing. Always keep an eye and ear out for people who might be asking for your help. Be aware and be kind and do your best to better another person’s day or yours always💙

Hi. I’m a guide dog trainer in Scotland. I’m the one who teaches the dogs left and right, how to find doors, chairs, crossing buttons, elevators etc, how to avoid all sorts of obstacles while ensuring their handler avoids them too (this is one of the most difficult tasks for the dog), I teach them to ignore the “forward” cue if there is traffic approaching, how to cope with a handler who may have poor balance or an awkward gait, how to walk past food, litter, cats, dogs, birds and smells without being distracted. This video was so beneficial for me, as I do not teach my dogs to “find the counter”. I teach them to find all sorts of things, but not that one. And seeing how useful it was for you, I’m going to be sure to teach all my trainees how to do that! Thanks for the video! 😃 PS. Which school did you get your guide dog from? I was under the impression that all schools in the USA had stopped using chain collars.

Interesting to read this, Winday. I noticed in the video that in several places, she gave the dog the command to, for instance, go right - because a person had said to - but the dog did not until there was an actual passage. It sounded like, as she gave her dog the repeat command, she understood that it was waiting for a clear passage to follow the command.

Whitetiger333 hi! Yes, the dogs will be taught to ignore all sorts of cues if it is unsafe or difficult to do them. Eg if I’m working my dog down a narrow street and another person is walking towards me, I teach the dogs to stop and wait until the people have passed and there is space for my dog and I to move again. Once the dog has learned to do this I will then teach them to ignore my “forward” cue until the way is clear for us. It’s pretty cool to see how much they can learn and how quickly! 😃

Because it was frustrating for not only me to watch but for her to go through. And I may have exaggerated about how it went down but I'm sure people are like this regardless. And it surely felt like the clerk was being this way.

You can see good girl Antonia getting upset "I don't know where I am, I don't know where to go, how am I going to do right, how am I going to help?" And then the utter relief when she gets praise and a treat "thank goodness, we did it!" This video definitely made me think and learn. My direction-keeping brains are very non-verbal and I usually have a hard time guiding _anybody_, but it shouldn't be quite impossible.

Dog is so smart. I hate when people say service dogs get no love. Their owner will give them so much love and the stimulation they get from learning and following commands doing all their service dog things. I would argue that service dogs are happier than a lot of dogs.

people who say that are just upset they can't pet the cute doggy they see while out and about -_- those dogs go home with that person too, and that person probably wants to sit and relax at some point too, and guess what happens- same thing the rest of us do with our dogs while relaxing, rub the dog lol.

They really are! My significant other has a service dog and compared to other normal dogs and their owners, they have such a strong bond. It's a beautiful friendship where they get to help each other. :)

I’m not visually impaired at all, however I find it so frustrating when Old Navy rearranges every time I’m in that store. I’ve always wondered if guide dogs get confused by that.

I mean the guide dogs go to different places all the time so even if they change it up they probably treat it like a new place
