Dude, it helped! Seriously. Good instruction. I'm not up for a Berkeley Audition (wish I could play like that) but just having you "voice" the parts beforehand was definitely helpful. Keep sending us the online tutorials! Always appreciated. Hope you have a great career, man!

I've been playing drums for about 32 years and I found your video EXTREMELY helpful, JP!! I never took lessons and so would consider myself more of a hack than anything else and I do stuff that I couldn't explain or classify because of my lack of formal training. Be that as it may, as I watched your video, I discovered some of what I do and how it could be classified. For that, I am thankful!! Best wishes to you and thanks for taking the time to put this together!!

"just start with the time and then add things in as they feel right" that is almost the exact quote my band director gave me the first time i played jazz. As simple as it sounds i really think that is the best approach to playing jazz drums. great vid JP keep it up!

Loved hearing your Latin tips. It’s my weakest genre; I learned the basic boss nova and samba rhythm 20 years ago, and still find it hard to improvise over top of the basic back beat. I just can’t seem to internally feel the time which just frustrates me to no end. I’ve always chalked it up as being something unteachable. Basically, you either get it or you don’t. But after listening to your take on it and demonstration I just might get past what I learned in like 7th grade. You play tastefully and I like that you hold back and resist over killing it. And I loved the 2 beat trips. You must like them because I heard you play them a few times. I think most drummers love a well place two beat trip. Well done.

Superb session JP - broad representative style selections, clear explanations, thoughtful remarks and superb performance - your own drumming. Also - SO nice to hear a bass drum with some of its name to it - a 'bass' drum. Your style is fluid and very comfortable. My drumming 'hero' is Big Sid Catlett, so that is how far back my listening goes (1930s - 1940s). Well done, and so nice in HD - thank you!

you don’t go to berklee to learn how to play, you go there to learn how to be a musician if that makes sense. i know those may sound the same, but being a professional musician is much more than simply playing well. you have to be able to work with others, you have to be able to articulate a creative vision, and most importantly you have to know people that are in the music game. berklee offers all of those things, plus top notch instructors and guest speakers. you’re basically guaranteed a place in the music industry when you leave there.
