I studied with Thomas earlier this year. For those that are making comments based on this video, you have no idea how good Thomas is. If you sit in the same room with him for three days straight and hear the breadth of his ability you would be truly inspired. The stuff he did in the classroom was off the hook. His independence is crazy. I hear guys say they are four limb independent. Go watch this guy for yourself and then say you are four limb independent. And feel you say? Even this video displays tremendous texture and any speed and and groove. Don't hate on a guy for being the best. If you think the guy doesn't have the skills, post your video so we can all critique your work too.

Michael Foxworthy Yeh I know what your saying and your right he is a monster and he has pushed the boundaries in terms of power and pure technique to another dimension BUT... I just don't feel anything when he solo's , I wanna feel something but I never do with Thomas (I have seen him live). But yeh, wow! he has skills of the like I have never seen.
@michaelfoxworthy32139 жыл бұрын
Micky watnots Sometimes he just hits so many drums it's more like acrobatics but he sure can tear it up. He did this crazy piece where he goes from slow single stroke rolls on his hands and is blazing with his feet. Then he slowly changes the tempo on his hand and feet until the whole thing is opposite. I couldn't believe what I just saw.

Just because TL doesn't play something that you think is musical doesn't mean he isn't. Clearly the man has his own sense of what he likes to play. I loved this performance.

Who the fuck would say this is not musical? He plays really fast and technical and still manages to have a good groove.
@dumpygoodness40863 жыл бұрын
@@ToveriJuri nope. when he GROOVES (like 1:16) he's MIND BLOWING yet also tasty AF. but most of the time he's just showing off and doing muscle memory, VERSUS making it simultaneously SUPER-MUSICAL. EX: i'd tell him to simply REPEAT anything you play, 4 times, so it's like a riff we can hook onto. ALso, NEVER change the groove once you create one. Dance AROUND and over the groove, but do NOT KILL THE GROOVE or beat. It's like taking a lunch break DURING sex!!

James Stone You're not far off. Guys like Thomas have to commit their lives to their craft. You sacrifice your time, your relationships, and your family. It's an "all or nothing" proposition, which is why I accept my mediocre drumming(as compared to him), while I spend time with my wife, kids, and friends instead. Relationships are much more valuable, IMO.

I find the comments that slag him for being so technically outstanding really miss the mark. Yup, he can do accented paradiddle's with his feet. He can combine separate hand/foot rudiments so sound musical. He's obviously achieved things that I don't know of anyone else who has. Of course Weckl, Colaiuta, Harrison, Smith, etc., are outstanding. But he's also a very high demand session player and - yeah - you don't need to be able to do all he can do to play most music. But just because he can do these technically bewildering, precision-mind-blowing things that I don't know of anyone else who can, doesn't mean that he can't sit back and groove. There is a video of him in Stewart Copeland's "Sacred Grove." Copeland says "look, I also have one of the most expensive session players in LA here with me." Know all of what TL is capable of before slagging him for being so technically advanced. Whether being that precise and technically sophisticated costs him in 'groove,' I guess that's open to opinion.

Billy Reynolds really??? Do you even know who Thomas is? You want to see him in a band? There’s plenty of videos her on KZbin of him playing with bands and to tracks. He was the band Falco for quite a while until Falco’s untimely death. Played with Stork, guitar legend Paul Gilbert, plus writes, composes and plays his own music. And if you think he’s just “beating” on drums, you obviously don’t understand what he’s doing. The patterns he’s playing and his four way independence I guess are too complex for most to comprehend?

Lets get something straight. There is not a THING ... not one fill, grove, lick, beat, or roll that Thomas Lang cant do on a drum set. You name the greatest Drummers, and greatest Drum solo's of all time, and Thomas will be able to do it just at well and maybe better. He's a true freak of nature and a power house in the drumming world. However, i do see the other side to it. Some people think he has no groove or hes too flashy and i understand that. He does focus a lot of his playing on showmanship opposed to technique and musician ship like that beat he starts doing a little over a minute in is so simple and yet hes going absolutely bonkers with his stick trick ability. Sometimes hes just fun to watch instead of good to listen to. I used to crown him as the best drummer in the world, but i clearly see that he is not even close. Hes arguably the most talented... but hes also independant and has made a career off of solo stuff. I think is Tony Royster, or Neil Peart or name it WHOEVER, sat for hours and hours a day practicing stick tricks, they would be just as good. To me, for some one who used to idolize this guy and still thinks highly of him, it is not fair to crown a drummer of his style and grace as the best out there. You just cant.
@panzerken10 жыл бұрын
Well said. I just could never spend hours practicing stick tricks! (although I think they are cool!)

Terribly said, on one hand he's the greatest you say but on the other he isn't? Which one is it. You must have only seen him do solos! He's got alot of just songs out there where he plays very musically just holding a solid pocket. Guess what he makes it look easier than anyone I've ever seen. Now add his mad showmanship skills to that, yeah it's not hard at all to say he's the top dog all around in drumming. This is coming from a big Chris Coleman fan and you know how badass he is and still I say Lang is the best of the best

Technique, speed, shock and awe aside, do you guys see or rather hear any music in this? Any melodic concept, dynamic variety, some space or air, and compositional idea? I don't. Definitely, his technical abilities need to be respected. But we are talking about music; drums are part of a musical situation. Honestly... Look guys, there aren't many, if any videos with Thomas on a band stand. Who has he played with, what has he recorded? where is that for us see or better: hear? He didn't end up in Drum Theater, I don't know the story behind that, but I guess he would actually have to drop a great part of his technique because that is something that is not wanted in bands, as it would just disturb the music. Even if you think of powerful hard rock / metal drummers - Lars Ulrich coming to my head - doesn't put on that show. Just my views.
@johncollins408011 жыл бұрын
Seriously? What have YOU recorded? Who have YOU played with? Does every video on KZbin have to be a masterpiece designed specifically for you? It's just 6 minutes of him screwing around with his new sticks. Enjoy it for what it's worth or go make your own video; then you can display all of your awesome holier-than-thou talents.
@strachan140311 жыл бұрын
The guy creates numerous beats within that solo and he uses a variety of dynamics and puts his whole kit to use, he's got some serious control and just because his musicality doesn't appeal to yours doesn't suggest it isn't musical
@d3laiah10 жыл бұрын
Seriously, I'll never understand people like you. If you don't know the facts, at least use google or something, why just go out and make false and uneducated claims? Makes you look stupid more than anything else. He did play with Paul Gilbert, Tina Turner, Robbie Williams, Sugababes, Ronan Keating, half of the Spice Girls, the Vienna Art Orchestra and others. I mean, what do they know, right? They should have just called you and asked you for your opinion before hiring him, they would have spared them selves the trouble of playing with such an unmusical drummer. Some people, I just... I'm lost for words. Oh, and he was voted best drummer and clinician by multiple magazines, but again, what do they know, right? You should publish an article with your opinions somewhere to spare everybody's time, so they don't have to watch this guy. Sheesh...
@DrummerOtto10 жыл бұрын
d3laiah I kind of understand what Mobby74 means. This is definitely not the best solo that Lang has played. My drum teacher once said that a good drum solo is like a good movie. It starts with a scene that makes u want to watch the whole film but then it calms down. The actual climax comes in the end. Also, the film can't be an action movie, a love story, a horror film and a comedy at the same time. You have to have a concept, like a pattern that u repeat. The film can't be filled with action from the start to finish. There must be more contrast. Like quiet parts and louder parts. This solo was kind of an endless flow of super cool ideas, but there was not much repetition. If I could play any of those super-killer-master patterns Thomas plays there I would use maybe one or two and make an entire solo out of them and repeat them more often and then maybe play them with different dynamics... Then again, I have heard Thomas playing absolutely super musical and killer solos that I love and I know he is one of the best drummers out there. I think this wasn't even ment to be a super musical solo. He's just kind of messing around.
@johncollins408010 жыл бұрын
Otto Laakso I agree with your last 3 sentences, but they are a complete contradiction to the first paragraph. I'm not sure what you or your old teacher were trying to say, lol, but regardless, I think the original argument was that trying to over-analyze and nitpick everything anyone records to KZbin is ridiculous. If you agree that he is just messing around, then all the rest of that stuff is beside the point; that's all I'm saying. In the end, he is a better drummer than anyone who has commented on this video. Period.

Actually this is the most awesome drumming I have ever seen from Thomas!

Cool stuff. But where the rubber meets the road is in musical collaboration with other players. You can sit there and blow monster drum chops and do flashy stick tricks all day long. But that doesn't mean you can make music. Play me somethin'. That being said, I love watching him.
@cornbobrimlove78928 жыл бұрын
+Don Thomas......... You want all that in one demo? But that is not what this particular video is about. Watch one that is, then you can be happy and he can have your very valued approval
@spacejazz62728 жыл бұрын
he's a pretty successful session musician which seems to imply he does play well in groups
@maplehappy11 жыл бұрын
i love that hes so completely unpredictable! also love that you can like tell when he hiccups in his improv, just proves that he's human and thinking about what he plays just the same as you or i would...except he has those chops!

Yeah I'm just gonna quit drumming now

i have those sticks they are extremely light. The head is big to make a full sound but the sticks are the same weight as 5as
@rich489610 жыл бұрын
Brandon Taylor Seriously? I use Vic Firth 5A's and they are perfection..so you are saying that his sticks are the same weight, with a better sound? :D
@524coconut10 жыл бұрын
Maybe closer to 5 bs but yeah. Your five as are hickory. His are maple it's a lighter wood
@rich489610 жыл бұрын
Ah ok...Maybe the thickness of a 5B, but witht he weight of a 5A then...that would be spot on, I reckon!

Definitely a different style with Lang! I personally love it but it's good to see people who aren't bashing him for it for once. My respect goes to you guys!

The over use of the double bass drum pedal just kills solos. Those fills sound like a drum machine for me. That's my personal opinion, anyway.
@michaelbauers88009 жыл бұрын
Love this solo and drum machines both :)
@BigBillLucas9 жыл бұрын
arleco12 I can totally agree with you, double pedals is not my thing either but these days all drum solo's are played like this, i guess we just have to accept it as the norm. Once you get past that line it's fun and it doesn't get any better than this guy
@mcorre169 жыл бұрын
arleco12 And i totally agree. TL is very good for sure, but just see Dave weclke before and for me TL is soulless, just a prefect drum machine but no musicallity..
@PeterEnis697 жыл бұрын
arleco12 well, he is a machine
@dorukuysal83726 жыл бұрын
arleco12 since I love most of the extreme metal bands this guy is special among the other drummers lol. And also using double kick like this requires high technique because it means more combination. But you are so right when you said double bass kills solo especially in jazz, funk, blues or any other non metal genres. After a point tastes in music decides which one is better in that persons opinion I guess..

I love to see these comments from people you've never seen or heard of (and never will), getting all critical about Thomas Lang's drumming. Are you kidding? Maybe he will let you shine his cymbals one day - if you're lucky.
@drumz479 жыл бұрын
I love Thomas Lang but I'm just so damn tired of stick tricks. Tricks are for circus people. I'm just sayin. Peace
@samjimenez87139 жыл бұрын
He plays in Vegas like as a live act so I mean he does them a lot because people who watch him in Vegas who don't know anything about drums can still be wowed about the stick tricks
@sulovet9 жыл бұрын
i still don't understand why people have a problem with stick tricks. i mean all it does is make the performance look cooler. like every drum cover i watch that has even like one stick flip in it gets a shit ton of comments of people saying how it ruined it...
@ikshields9 жыл бұрын
+Sulove Tripathee - Actually, it makes it look like a professional narcissist is behind the drums, instead of a musician. Spending more time in front of the mirror than between the ears.
