Good video work Jeff. Brings back my ownen n operatin days. My Pops, Bro, and myself ran N model small cam then big cam Cummins from the 70's into the 90's. Larry Fyke out of LA did most of our performance work then. He retired out of Cummins rebuild in Montebello Ca. and opened his own shop. Took me in like an uncle and taught me quite a bit hands on about our Cummins in them days. Larry tuned Bob Wilsons KW "Ironsides" every year before it went to Yancey Bros Caterpillar dyno drags in San Diego. He could make them run but last as well. My last BCIII 400 was a 1985 cpl 0614 engine that ran over a million miles by 96. I have a buddy that had an N14 in an over the road Pete that ran 1,250000 miles without rebuild. Them N14's like yours were the peak of development for N model engines prior to the Signature ISX stuff. One thing among many Larry always did with a set of heads was replace all the valves. Intake and exhaust both got new stellite exhaust valves. Guides and seats were done as well. Be a shame to see you go through that ole girl and then have it swallow a valve. You already know to watch out for chinese parts.

Myself being involved some years ago with engine make swap outs found the cost to be prohibited. I dont think most people realize how costly that option is. First up the cost and condition of the replacement, then onto the modifications for mounting...hook-up...posible alterations to the cooling system and the list goes on. The three that I was part of were very costly and time consuming. My old trucking friends had N-14's that matched my 550 Cats mile for mile, they also followed the same service routine as i did with my Cats. You are very astute with all things mechanical and fussy with servicing Jeff...watching you operate is very gratifying.

Seeing you struggle with the hoist makes me feel lucky to have a 10 ton one at work. Done hundreds of engines over the years. If up-grading the trans, go to an 18 speed, only way to go. Keep up the good work, we know Jeff wins.

Absolutely! But 'ya gotta remember, Jeffy and the monkey and the football. You just can't have one without the other. Jeff's a hoot and the nice thing about it? He has no memory of me whatsoever and that's probably a good thing! Remembering the 1980's at this stage of the game is damn near impossible. The years just seem to stack up on top of each other. Lol...

Hi Jeff You did well, 2 years of use with a wore out engine and trannny. Old come-a-parts and GMC : jimmies are tough and don't know when to quit. I had both engines in log trucks here in VT that ran far longer than they should have. I liked them because I could start them when it was -30 degrees. Good video. I remember the first videos of Petey.

Hey Jeff as a long time engine mechanic When you have to order new cam follower gaskets you have to order them as per each item part number that is on the gasket and not by combined thickness Or you may have to reset the base timing and that is a pain in the rear

Couldn't help but notice that the engine mount bushings were shot. I switched my Peterbilt to the high performance poly bushings. They last way longer. I haven't noticed it being any rougher. It took a while to find the cause of the vibration when the rubber ones went bad at only one year old.

That ol' girl is well worn. At least when you rebuild it, you absolutely know what you have. In frames have a habit of not getting everything they really need like tanking the block to clean all the oil passages. Sadly, all the tight spot work you did was for naught when you pulled it to do a complete out of frame Overhaul. But it'll be right. Snap On used to sell an Air Powered Gasket Scraper for those tough gaskets. Rrrrrr

Ole Petey is a nice truck and you will be much happier with a full rebuild on the motor and with the close ratio trans. I know it's hard to make that decision, but it kept getting worse at every step of the process.

Thank You Sir for the video.saw someone use a small torch on the difficult gaskets.heat em up abit so it liquifies the glue.would rather petey was good to go and didn't need major surgery. It will be done right when you get him back together. The vacuum part well i won't risk trash in any engine going in or out.never.

Roller bearings we heat them up in grease in a pot less chance of blueing bearing Hopefully liners are tight in bore or counter bores haven't been cut because you might need different size liners, might have to shim up liners to get protrusion to seal fire ring.
