@TheMrDarius almost. They have more power, but these are ridiculously over engineered and can last forever. Germans don't do things that way....like dumb Americans lol, they even admitted to over engineering this engine.

I believe that when you where talking about pulleys around 3:30, gale banks advice was referring to using the turbo as the low pressure compressor and the supercharger as the high pressure compressor, in this mode the optimal rpm for the supercharger falls as the turbo feeds it denser(or maybe higher pressure not sure which is the key variable) air. Where in this application using the supercharger as the low pressure compressor and the turbocharger as the high pressure compressor you do not need to slow down the supercharger as the turbo spools.

I believe that the optimal speed for the large pulley of the compressor would be about 10% lower. This is because, at 6000 RPM, the gear ratio should not result in the compressor exceeding the speed allowed by the specifications. Furthermore, as I see it, the pressure on the exhaust side only becomes higher than on the intake side at very high RPM. Therefore, it would be very efficient to increase the overlap duration of the camshafts. I hope this was understandable; this is a translation made using ChatGPT.

I love what you have done with the Kenne Bell, I have been kicking around some ideas like that for a while now. OM606s are a bit rare in the US, I was thinking about a solution to make a larger turbo usable on a 4BT Cummins, a 3.9L Isuzu, a Navistar VT265, 6.9/7.3 idi, 6.5 Detroit or something like that. Because a big positive displacement blower is so expensive, I have been thinking of possibibly less expensive ways. There is a channel called AlexLTDLX, he has taken a Vortech style centrifugal supercharger head unit, I tbink he is actually using the knockoff Speedmaster unit that goes for like $650 and he is running it with an electric motor designed for remote controlled helicopters and a lithium ion battery pack, it's capable of 600-700hp, he is using this system on a 363ci 8.2" Ford Windsor stroker engine, there is almost zero lag, it spools instanty. I would imagine a system like this would be incredible with a big turbo on a diesel because it would only need to run for a few secinds at a time to spool things up. The only downside is the batteries, one could use a nice sized pack and put the weight back near the rear wheels for traction. Having a nice sized battery pack could also open up the pissibility of using things like electric power steering, electric fans, electric water pumps, electric vaccum pumps for brakes, electric air conditioning, removing the accessory load from the engine and allowing more power to be made. All one might want to do is install a big alternator or two. One could also use a plug in at home system like a hybrid. One could also explore the possibilities of electric fwd for harder launches, re-gen brakimg and low speed/short trip electric use which is not ideal usage for a diesel engine. My other idea is to create an anti-lag system that ignites fuel between the engine and the turbo. Probably a system using propane and forced outside air whuch would also clean up sooty exhaust and spools the turbo. I feel that the batteries would be a better system than re-filling propane/CNG tanks all the time. Great video, I love how you guys think, I always have crazy stuff kicking around in my head as well. I really need to get back home to Tennessee from Brazil so I can work on some projects. You definatly earned my sub.

@nicolasp73953 ай бұрын
Its no legal there? Whu
@Drosba3 ай бұрын
@@nicolasp7395 Let me clarify, it's legal if you pay. Here you can't modify nothing, so for example changing the turbo is illegal and if they find out your car would be taken by a tow truck, but most of the time the ones checking are ignorant and don't find out. With the supercharger they would for certain find out. To be able to have this changes done to your car, firstly you can't do them yourself, it has to be an approved workshop $. Then you would need to pay for a lab to do extensive emissions and noise tests for the intake modification $, then the exhaust modification $ and that's assuming your car already has a OM606 stock. Changing the engine need more test $ and you can't modify the chassis, so no welding new engine mounts, for example. You would probably spend (just in paperwork, not counting the parts nor the workshop) about 6000€, about 5000GBP. And that's not counting if you want to do changes to the suspension, brakes, bodywork... It's literally a dictatorship. I love cars, but I love my country too, that's why I didn't left. My dream was to make my own motorcycle, but here they treat you like a brand, so you would need to provide several identical units for crash test, and you need to have traction control and ABS as well as a euro 6 compliant engine.
@nicolasp73953 ай бұрын
@Drosba omg thats crazy just to think all that and the amount of money that requires to make something to simple that all over the world is just normal. That is an insane setup and the graphs show it. So much more driveability at the cost of a smidge of top end power. Are you going to test if you can increase the top end, maybe with the bigger fuel pump like you said? Would be very interesting to see if similar flaws can be solved with a more mainstream and cheaper supercharger. As for the pulley, obvously a diameter increase has a huge increase on circumference so would there be a middle ground size pulley that increases that low end power but keeps the supercharger rpm at a reasonable level?
@jasonbirch11823 ай бұрын
Ok, so the supercharger is feeding the box which passes through the turbo correct? Once the turbo spools and is consuming more air than the supercharger is feeding then it is essentially freewheeling and the turbo sucks open a valve in the box and feeds from the air filter on the right side correct? Is that box or something similar available? Id like go do similar on a slightly lower power scale for longevity (and affordability) with a tvs1900 blower from a jag/landrover/ctsv.

I rev my edc unit 605 to 5800rpm without defueling and it sort of peaks the power before 5000 but it holds it in more or less up until the rev limitor 😄 Using an old holset hy35 10cm Maybe if the pump was set a bit more agressive you would have more peak power and potentially even longer curve. But this is bonkers too 💪🏻 EDIT: Just listened to the end and heard what you said, so.. No questions haha

few questions 1- do you have a graph of the boost curves for the respective combinations? 2-any chance you'll test having the turbo feed the supercharger with a large pressure actuated bypass around the supercharger? 3-since you seem to be maximizing mass-airflow potential will you try another larger roots or screw blower set up to make the same boost?

A clutch on the supercharger would be added complexity, but it would be very helpful in any sort of normal driving. Cruising down the highway you would probably want the supercharger disconnected. Above 3800rpm it should probably be turned off. Below ~25% TPS it could probably be disconnected. A nice 3D map to control it would be nice.

A more simple way to control a supercharger clutch would be a deactivating above a specific boost pressure. So once the turbo spools and pressure is above what the supercharger pushes, then it disconnects. Though the added wear item of a supercharger clutch is less than ideal.

If that's a Kenne Bell supercharger, that's a Lysholm/twin screw, yeah? You'll want to feed it with the turbo rather than the other way around - the turbo is your "air mover" and the supercharger would really be most-efficient as your high-pressure analog in a compound setup (if however it's a Roots, it doesn't like to compress, and would likely be better feeding a smaller turbo) - but then I realized this is a serial setup not a compound.....maybe try a compound? You'll probably get more efficiency & power out of it, especially if you keep the turbo compressor in its high-efficiency range on the compressor map With any compound setup though, the high-pressure stage effectively increases the engine's displacement for purposes of calculating the math on the low-pressure side A bar is a bar, *if properly waste-gated and piped*, and in fact the turbo would be better off because it's using waste energy

@danieldimitri61333 ай бұрын
At first I thought the screw supercharger over the turbo was all sorts of wrong. The problem is that turbo would just be flow limited by the supercharger speed. It made much more sense to me to have the centrifugal especially it being variable in speed should go over the positive displacement because you can just pull flow through a centrifugal and it's flow isn't decided by its speed, it's boost is and as he turbo finds speed the boost can go quite high when the pressure ratios compound. This compounding of pressure ratios gets weird when the variable flow of the turbo is in the middle and the fixed flow of of the screw is In front. Its fine if they are both fixed because you would just make one charger flow more volume and it would compound the pressure ratios fine. But with the turbo in the middle as it's boost gets higher the incoming flow goes up and the screw being relatively fixed in displacement (yeah there is leakage yada yada..) it just subtracts boost from the screw. If you were building a pulling tractor and wanted 75-200psi boost you would absolutely want the turbo blowing Into the supercharger. But this flap valve thing is kinda like the progressive setups on an rx7 or supra handing off the on demand boost of the supercharger over to the high flow and theoretically more efficient turbo charger when it's ready. It's about the simplest way and if you know you're power targets or available fuel pump parts are a certain size this might just be the best, most streetable way serving as antilag and a stand it untill the big low drive pressure turbo housing catches up to the fuel. Sure a wastegated turbo would be cheaper but perhaps per fuel flow might lose a bit to exhaust drive pressure. Understanding what you want out of something can radically change the design. Good stuff.
