Hey Jeff, Sorry to here about your best friend. Just remember the good times as life goes on. Just a thought, over the years of crawling around trucks and heavy equipment the one thing that really gets me is sh-t sticking out and ripping my shirts and pants or worse ripping MY skin. The point being when I put clamps on, I always rotate them so the studs are tucked out of the way. Your clamp stud on the exhaust is up on top, sticking out, just waiting to rip YOUR hide. Maybe if you move that one so the stud is sticking out just above the waist gate cylinder, it would be less likely to get you. Same with the inlet clamp, and the housing clamp. All of those look like they could be under the turbo so they are out of the way too. Love the videos. Cant wait to see some smoke from that bad boy. Dave

You forgot the never seize on the exhaust housing to center section. That makes life so much better someday in the future. Sorry to hear about your pup. My shop boss Baily(pit/lab mix) is like my shadow, I would be lost without him. If you had tapped that manifold you could have a drive pressure gage too which really tells you a lot about how well matched your setup is. You can actually drill and tap it while it is all together as the exhaust will blow any shavings that fall in out on startup. Just don't blow down in it with an airgun as you could force some chips towards the valves where they could do some damage. They will blow right thru the turbo no problem when it starts, you could even vice grip the shaft from turning for security if it worried ya, I usually do anyway so it is all well lubed with pressure oil before it ever turns.
@stanpatterson50337 жыл бұрын
I don't know about Jeff, but I would remove a manifold and drill/tap it, then reinstall. That way nothing would be in a position to do any damage. I don't know about you, but my luck is such that if I drilled on the manifold, the damn drill bit would break or crumble, and then that would be inside the damn thing, and then I'd be forced to remove it, and at that point I'd be really angry. And you know what can happen when you're already angry and something else goes wrong..... "Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry." -- Bruce Banner

Where you should read your egt's at ,is the cylinder that runs the hottest.it seems that there is always one cylinder that runs hot,be it timing,compression ,or fuel mixture,to cooling.also for example cylinder 1 at 800 rpm heavy load could be hot ,then raise rpm or increase load ,cylinder 5 might be the one too hot.you have to tune to the one that will melt first.great fun tuning on the edge!expensive too.
@michaelbrown85457 жыл бұрын
Dale olson you are correct but that reading is only relevant if you can adjust the fuel setting of each injector, it is also handy when diagnosing a bad injector. All Cat performance specs state after turbo exhaust temps as generaly that is the hottest exhaust temp. If you have a cylinder that is not burning all its fuel the pre tubo EGT will be cold but the after turbo EGT will be hot because the unburnt fuel leaving the cylinder will cool that cylinder but as it is still burning in the manifold it will increase the exhaust temp. Cheers mate🍻

A retarder model will always have a remote mount filter, you can also get a remote on a non retarder, but the issue is the way they went from hoses to metal lines on the ACERT so the drain line for the turbo will not fit an ACERT with a single turbo and a retarder, It was never meant to be

Sorry to hear about your dog. German Shepherds are the best. I've enjoyed seeing him in some of your videos. I turned my C-15 into a C16 during overhaul. A couple of my friends turned theirs into C-18s. Once you get over 800 horses they start to get better milage. It seems 600 horse is about the worst milage. I take it that your visitor will be reflashing your ECM. Nice job.

You already know you’re going to drop a few hundred degrees going from exhaust side in, to exhaust side out. Skip the first thermocouple and it can never burn off and go through the turbo. 😢
@bcbloc027 жыл бұрын
Been my experience the pistons always melt and blow thru the turbo long before the thermocouple does. Maybe there are chinesium ones that are the other way around but that is how the isspro ones are.
@ralphsmithco17 жыл бұрын
bcbloc02 When dad lost one in the sixties, Isspro was the only brand available. Even fire brick burns out and needs replacement. Why risk it. There’s a reason OEM goes in the exhaust pipe. I’ve never had one in front of a turbo since.
@bcbloc027 жыл бұрын
If you are messing with stuff outside stock parameters you can have an 800deg post temp and an 1800deg pre temp if you have a lot of back pressure from a small turbine or housing or both. The pyro would say no worries but you would have already put holes thru your pistons so the gage didn't do you any good then.

If that air compressor is the original, with 620,000 miles on it. I suggest that it is time for a new or rebuilt. I have seen a number of CAT compressors fail after 500,000 miles - the bearing at the rear of the compressor shaft fails, allowing the compressor shaft to wobble around and destroy the drive gear at the front of the compressor. The drive gear for the compressor runs off a very expensive gear train at the front of the engine, and a wobbling compressor drive gear will tear up the whole gear train. Replacing that gear train can cost $8,000 to $10,000.

Might want to consider taking that short radius boot off the charger and clean the inside surfaces with alcohol. Hi Jeff, Gene Groby from Austin, Mn and I started driving commercial vehicles back in 1987. I personally feel trucks should not have an automatic transmission as it takes away the professionalism of truck driving. With automatics, any Tom, Dick or Jane can jump in and not worry about having to learn on how to drive a semi truck.
@Romans--bo7br6 жыл бұрын
Eugene Groby..... Hi Eugene, First... I completely agree with your sentiments regarding transmissions and the degenerative effect it's had on the "quality" (or rather, the severe Lack of quality in relation to today's so called "truck drivers" / steering wheel holders). However, I would just like to clear up One thing in relation to the transmissions these days, especially those utilized in todays large (and Not so large as well) fleets... and that is, calling the ransmissions "Automatics"..... they are Not, "automatics".... automatic transmissions are "fluid drive"... like in a car or pickup truck, etc, etc. What Semis have are... "Automated MANUAL transmissions"... a huge difference. These are still manual 10, 13, 15 and 18 spd boxes... and still retain the shift tower, but the shift lever is now actually controlled by an electro-magnetic servo motor which is controlled by it's own ecm which is attached to the engines ecm, and the same goes (in many cases) for the clutch, it's still there... but it is actuated in the same manner as the shift lever.

I can't for the life of me. Remember what road we got on north of there. That took us to I-90? I have a feeling it was 87 to 287. But not sure, just know in the winter time. it was better and shorter when heading to Bismark ND. I just remember when It was my time to drive. And it was daylight. That was a nice drive. We ran team back then. 7200 miles per week. So had to have a nice ride sometimes. LOL
