I am very fond of this level for two reasons: 1. It was one of the first megawads I completed after a long Doom hiatus. I loved it. 2. It showed me that the Doom community is global and there is as much skill on this side of the world as the other.

I feel like every part of your videos has improved drastically since your first WAD review. Your commentary on the levels' combat, art, and general experience is much more clear, memorable, and informative. Your comedic efforts are much more defined, and I quite enjoy them, and find myself audibly laughing at times. Any of your videos make me want to immediately play that WAD. Your reviews are exactly what a WAD review should look like. Thank you for making these videos.

Here's another megawad recommendation: Hellbound. It's not for everyone, the premise of the wad is creating huge and complex maps somewhat "realistic", with hundreds of enemies, but I really liked it, every map feels like an exciting adventure. I know you get many recommendations, but it's your fault for creating an awesome series =)

Oh hell yes I am excited to watch this one. This wad holds a very special place in my heart. It was a huge part of making me a better Doom player as I was (and still am) quite casual, and the maps are just so much fun and brimming with personality. EDIT: Well I am validated with MAP26 being the hardest... Thought it was just me, but I spent forever trying to beat that one. Nanka and Toooooasty's maps have to be my favourite overall. Nanka has a versatile style but everything she makes is a marvel in some way, and I'm a sucker for the surreal so Toooooasty hits that sweet spot for me.

Ah yes, I've been waiting for this one. I realized while watching that the maps that stood out for me were the more visually distinctive ones (I'm lowkey disappointed with Woodexial's "D" since that's one of the more memorable maps to me), and I don't really remember how hard the levels are. I remember HeLLport being tough, but that's about it. I think Maps 27 and 29 are my fav (pun kinda intended), and it's mostly due to the striking visuals. I love Map 27's use of green, and 29's insanity. Maybe since I've played so many DOOM maps since 2004, I go more towards the aesthetics of a map instead of the combat since the combat doesn't really change but the level design can, especially with the use of custom textures and source ports allowing more creativity. Still, this is an incredibly solid megaWAD and it's really fun. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I know Japanese sorta well (I'd say at an intermediate level, by their own testing standards for language proficiency) and I'm still trying to figure out what the pun with 54 pit is. It's probably something to do with the Japanese pronunciations of the numbers, either as "gojuuyon" (fifty-four) or "gojuushi" (another way to say fifty-four) or "go yon" (five four) or "go shi" (another way to say five four). I 100% get why you say Tyousen's name the way it is, his spelling is a quirk of JP keyboards. It should actually be pronounced like "Cho-sen" which means start of hostilities or competition. He writes his name as Tyousen because in the "ta" set of Japanese syllables, they don't have "ti," they have "chi," and you can modify "chi" to be "cha, cho, or chu" for other syllables, so when typing on a JP keyboard, you'd just type in "tyo" and hit tab or space to get it converted to "cho." I'm actually still using my keyboard I got from when I lived in Japan! Anyway, thanks for the review! I just like when I get to use some of my language knowledge with one of my all time favorite games.

13:24 they are literal English translations of "mood-invoking" phrases in Japanese. Those phrases are called "kimochi", I believe, and there's another word for the practise of literally translating them into English, which Google refuses to help me find right now. As for the .wad itself: I literally got stuck on map 5 (repeatedly dying by getting stuck on the environment) and did a rage quit. One definately has to have an appreciation for the community aspect of it, because it's definately not a slick Doom experience.

Another great analysis, and you've looked at nearly all of the maps that got weaponsets from Final Doomer too! Unfortunately, the remaining two, Hellbound and Whitemare 2, don't quite reach the highs of this, BTSX, or Ancient Aliens. I enjoyed Hellbound for what it was worth, but some people have docked it for boring combat and, while my memory is fuzzy, I can say it's not the most impressive-looking megawad all around. Whitemare 2, I still haven't played much of yet, but it seems to be a bizarre mishmash of various ideas that look great but play mixed, particularly the infamous map 20. I did play through the first Whitemare, though... it's pretty damn amateurish. I digress. While I commented on episode 13 that I wouldn't suggest ideas (since you've probably got a mountain of suggestions already), since you've lauded viewers for suggesting this and Going Down, what the Hell. The above-mentioned HB and WM2 are Cacowards runners-up, so while flawed, they might be worth a check. Allow me to add five more suggestions that I can happily recommend: 1: Revolution!: Thomas van der Velden's classic 2001 map provides a mostly-easy challenge but a well-rounded look at level design for the time. Don't forget Jimmy's MIDI pack for it! 2: Epic 2: Alexander "Eternal" S.'s Egyptian-themed (at least to start) tour de force may have some nasty moments, but the aesthetics are more than worth it. You can also play the first Epic, but it's only five maps, so I'm not sure how it would be covered unless you're open to minisodes and/or grab-bags of single and/or single-digit mapsets. 3: Whispers of Satan: Paul Corfiatis and Kristian Aro's hugest contribution (and their individual accomplishments are nothing to sneeze at), this classic-feeling megawad does start out slow but eventually opens up into a grand set of Hell levels that are worth sticking around for. Been awhile since I've played this one, but I recall finding it worthwhile. 4: Resurgence: I've no doubt you have Speed of Doom on your list, but I might argue this latter megawad from Joshy (which also won a Cacoward) is even better and no less brutal. I think map 31 might have broke me a bit (probably just due to me being a mediocre Doom player), but it's on Doomworld's top 100 maps list with good reason. 5 (and this is the most obscure of the bunch): 1994 Tune-up Community Project. I admit the project leader of this one is a great friend of mine, so I apologize for the bias, but I'm not expecting you to rate this one highly since it's a jumble of old Doom maps that were punched up in an attempt to be more palpable. Whether or not they are is up to you, but it IS at least an interesting idea for a Doom project that I'm not sure has been done elsewhere, so consider giving it a go and be as merciless as you like with it. Apologies for this mega-post, but I wouldn't have spent twenty minutes writing this up if I didn't really enjoy your work. After all, you finally motivated me to get around to Eviternity and I don't regret that in the least... although I don't think I liked Dehydration as much as you did, haha. But I digress again. Keep it up, Dean!

Seriously, though, Cybersky would be a great WAD to review as a minisode. It's made by the same guy as Epic (Eternal) so it's quite expansive with surprising amounts of detail. Also notable for having one of the highest monster counts of any user-made WAD up to that point (2009ish). Plus, it uses the awesome E1M1 track from Heretic as its theme!

So would you say JPCP is better than Community Chest as a whole? Because I like Cchest... well, Cchest 3 and 4 at least. If it's worth my time, I'll download it for sure. BTW, from your very much correct mini-description of Ribbiks, I absolutely can't wait for you to review Sunlust. This project is something truly special. Most community packs without a set theme like this can be all over the place in terms of quality and consistency. Sure, those are issues that are still here in JPCP, and yet... there is something undefinably charming about what was compiled here. There are spots in this megawad that it barely even seems like youre playing doom anymore, and there are also portions that are just purely solid Doom gameplay. Then there are Tooasty's maps. I have no idea what they were trying to achieve, but it is clear to me that they achieved it. Completely confounding and nonsensical, and yet I just... like it? It's a disorienting trip through environments that can't or shouldn't exist, and every new corridor or room is a complete surprise. There is no possible way to predict what comes next while you're playing them. The Dean said it best, these aren't maps, they're modern art.

Nice! I do have some recommendations for the next wads should play. You should probably covered Hell-Revealed. I'm surprised you haven't covered it yet, but I think it would make a good special, like how you reviewed Doom 2. Make it Episode 20 There is also Doom: The Way Id did it, and Doom 2: The Way Id did it (DTWID for short). It might be the first two parter videoes on the series, because even though they are meant for Doom 1 and Doom 2 respectably, they were made in the same way and resigned all the levels in their games. I think you should download their Midi tracks to, atleast for Doom 1's version(I haven't found a custom trackset from D2TWID yet). The versions I played just had the Original music. Doom 2: Reloaded is a good alternative for DTWID as well. There is also Plutonia 2 and TNT: Revilution if you want something like DTWID and Reloaded, but for, you know. But my most recommended wad to you is Unloved. Very interesting set of levels. Has a horror theme to it and a hub map. Can be somewhat compared to Silent Hill and other horror games. Doesn't change the gameplay of Doom much. It has less maps then other wads on this show, but you should go check it out regardless. But these are just my recommendations. I just hope you enjoy them!

Hilarious coincidence there's two back to back wads with final fantasy music LMAO Map 26's use of "The Legendary Beast" from Final Fantasy 8 is masterful; in ff8 it was used as one of the four final boss themes, when the second boss uses its ultimate attack; however it's also set to use this attack if it were to die and hasn't used it at all yet; this means most players probably only ever heard the first 20 or so seconds, and it's a damn shame because the song is so dramatic the further in you get. Glad to see map 26 used a midi version of it, and it seemed to have fit in expertly.

Which is funny, because MK isn't very popular in Japan

I loved that perfect dark midi reduction

Map 03’s MIDI sounds like an anime opening theme. Makes sense since the wad comes from Japan.

Almost any map by Burabojunior has that feel. Especially the space base maps.

BlooM.WAD, Hurt.WAD and MMDCXIV.WAD All of these are some of the most awesome wads I've played, any of these are beautiful and would make for some great commentary

Is 54-Pit supposed to be a slightly cryptic Doom 2 reference? 5+4=9, Map 9 of Doom 2 is the Pit? Love your videos btw, keep up the great work! 🙂

You can also read it as 'Go Die'.

You should do InnocenceX and Resurgence :) Innocence is basically Doom64 in DoomII and Resugence is a normal megawad but backwards, you start in hell and go back to earth.

13:37 It's actually a payday 2 reference to the overdrill safe to make simple in this heist with your friends you need to put in a certain position to be able to do overdrill to make simple you need to wait 30 min i think to wait the dril open and do a puzzle to have all the gold who bring a lot of money but it's very long. I know this is a very late coment but better later than never

Looking back on it, I'm pretty sure Blood Fund Gang is a reference to the First World Bank heist from Payday 2, they have remarkably similar layouts.

Oh good, so I'm not crazy and Hellport actually was an incredible level. Riminshi Valley was probably my overall favorite, because it just had such a beautiful combination of map design and music.

Are you planning to do TCs in the future? I want to see your take on Pirate Doom.

54-PIT is most likely a Japanese number pun/wordplay (goroawase). I can't think of any meaning using just the 54 but it may be a pun when combined with Pit. Perhaps the map creator has made notes or comments about it.

Only 8 maps in so far but absolutely love both Toooooasty's maps especially map 8. Okay just finished, great wad cant imagine what it would be without Toooooasty, burabojunior and Nanka Kurashiki. Not to make light of the other contributors but those three delivered many maps all of which i enjoyed greatly without fail. Toooooasty especially blew me away with insanely creative intricately detailed maps(even if the combat in some is a little lacking).

I always assumed Tatsurd made levels for this, but I guess I was wrong. My memory is hazy at times with some WADs. Have you thought of reviewing the Memento Mori WADs and their sequel Requiem? While there are better WADs out there today, those 3 have a special place in my heart as they were the first megaWADs I ever played through.

Is map 32 really just payday's "first world bank" but in doom?, The secret gold loot vault seems oddly reminiscent of the overdrill secret and the overall structure of the level is almost identical to the heist itself
