Your analogy between different endeavors is very smart. I'm a pro musician and a starting cuber, and what you outline definitely applies to playing music. Learning the technical stuff and theoretical stuff, up to the point where you don't have to think about them, and that's where the real music starts. Thanks for your great videos!

@@JeffHendricks How long have you been practicing? If you have been practicing for a few weeks or less, then you may just need more practice. For me, it took around two months to get my hands close to the speed that they are now and I started when I was around 17 or so. Depending on your age, it may just take a longer time to develop those speeds. However, if you have been working on it for maybe six months or so, and haven't noticed a significant increase in TPS, you may want to give roux a try. Roux has a lot less moves in a solve on average and you would be able to get your times faster with less TPS. I don't know your specific situation so I can't recommend much, but I hope this helps. Basically, if you are limited by your hands, try to make your solves as efficient as possible, and using knowledge of algorithms and cases to bridge the gap.

@@LuzoroMD I'm 45. I've been practicing for about 2 years. I've considered Roux, but I'm not sure if I'm slow because I just can't go faster, or I'm missing something with cube setup and fingertricks... using a Moyu Aolong V2, lubed and pretty smooth.

Great advice, in short don’t try to run before you can walk! I can compare this to learning guitar which I’ve been doing in the past year. As a beginner I’ve broken down stuff into key areas… there’s changing the chord shape with your left hand (as a right handed person), there’s keeping a rhythm with your right hand and then there’s playing in time with music. Ultimately you need to learn all 3 but trying to combine even 2 of those skills at the start feels impossible. So you practice chord changes in isolation and when you think you’ve got that you try to introduce strumming and quickly realise that you don’t have enough brain power to do both at once and have to go back to the first skill until it’s almost automatic. The parallel to cubing is uncanny. You learn the algorithms and then try to either speed up and/or look ahead and everything falls apart because the first skill isn’t fully ingrained and you’re asking for 150% of your available brain power 😂

yeah, this advice applies in many areas: Say you're playing an instrument: you can't really look that far ahead until you're good enough that recognizing the notes and then playing them isn't difficult, but it becomes essential once you're capable of doing that. Same with the board game of Go (a lot like the chess example): a lot of beginners put excess focus on trying to analyze the board, and this both makes them slow players, but also doesn't improve their game a whole lot. I do teach the basics of reading ahead (from my intuitive angle), but usually that is with the intent on getting them to realize that reading is built on a foundation of intuition that allows you to filter out many moves and look for the most probable move first. I also tell them to do blitz for this same reason. Once you can get that fundamental intuition in order, then reading is just an extension of that that becomes crucial at high level play Really all board games have that bit with analysis paralysis, especially for those not familiar It's basically crawl before you walk: only once the thing your building on is natural can you continue on to do more complicated things

Can't stress enough how great and opening eyes this video is. I'm a 27 yo guy that started cubing around 3 months ago. I'm currently solving 3x3 consistently under 90'' by using CFOP, still learning two looks OLL & PLL. I'm clearly the older cuber, I love this stuff but don't have much time to train. And so I'm always trying to get smarter first, gathering too many tips, over optimizing too much. I went straight to learn advance F2L and recognition after cross is currently killing my performance. Actually shifting colors every few days to become agnostic makes it harder (yeah.. kill me). Now I was thinking solving pairs on the back and getting some look ahead tips would help me as sounds just logical, but clearly not. It's like being already stressed juggling, then adding a few more balls to the round. Will try to relax and think less, avoid rushing and let things happen more naturally. Got great learning on this one Dylan, thanks for the wisdom!

@@justaregularhumanbeing hey! Thanks for asking, been 6 months from this! Haven't taken times recently, but I should be between 20" and 25". Almost full PLL & quite efficient on F2L, have a lot of room to improve on cross & cross to F2L transition. Not pushing much these days though. Cheers!

Hey Jperm. Nice video man! So I've been doing this thing unknowingly, I focus on turning as fast as I can, somewhat ignoring look ahead. However, it is during some practice sessions that I don't know how but I just turn into beast mode, and my look ahead becomes just way too good, even with fast speed. I begin averaging sub 10 consistently. Why is this is happening? Really frustrates me when my look ahead is not at par with that level other times. My average of 1000 is a low 11, but my best average of 5 is 8.99

One important thing is to not expect to be at your A game. Those are outliers and happen unreliably, so it's better to try your best to improve your B game. If your look ahead needs work most of the time, slow down your turning a little bit to make it much better. Your turning will naturally speed up if you're having one of those good days again.

I may be able to answer this even though I am not J-Perm, as this happens to me occasionally as well. My best guess is that sometimes the solve is really lucky with where the cases end up. Also, this could be a mental thing. If you've ever watched E-sports, you can see an obvious momentum shift in games. One team or person may just start dominating another, and riding on that hype to win a match. If you are hyped up and you aren't focused on times and just on solving, you may stop caring about messing up and just absolutely do every case flawlessly. For me, I tend to notice my solves are faster when I'm not worried about the times at all, and am trying to focus on look ahead and then, when I glance at the time I've got, It's a 13 (about 3-5 seconds faster than my average normally)
