Thanks Peter for this video. As postgaduate in photography I have to say that you are on the right path. Photography and Impressionism went hand and in hand from the very beginning and it was only Sontag who claimed that Photography is ultimately Surrealistic. Perhaps it partially became so in order to satisfy the need of stunts for the all devouring American public. However, Impressionism was, and partially still is, embbeded in representational photography. As Baudelaire was called us photographers Sun Worshippers.

Great ideas - it's time that street photographers realised that there is so much creativity in photography, and using the camera to go impressionistic, or similar, is another pathway of photography to explore. Thanks for a great video, and commentary. Sean

I can recommend to look at the Pictures of Saul Leiter and some of Ernst Haas
@DennisFreeland6 ай бұрын
Yes its an approach that is grabbing ny interest and will be experimenting. It is not new though. One has only to look at the colour images of Ernst Haas and Saul Leiter from the 1950/60's to find the past masters of this way of imageing.
@martingreenberg8706 ай бұрын
Dragging the shutter helps create an impressionistic feel to an image. As a couple of commenters have noted, Ernst Haas was a master of this technique. During the day a NC filter will be very helpful to not overexpose the image. Also camera and/or zoom lens movement can help blur the image. The motion blur can convey a sense of dreamyness. Hello Peter, I have just had another thought about taking visually pleasing photographs. To elevate those visually pleasing photographs I think an effective approach would be to select shapes and light in a way that appeals to the viewers emotions more. Colour might be part of the photograph too. As shapes and composition have an emotional impact on people viewing a photograph I suggest people learn about shape and its visual effect and apply it to the selection of shapes in what they are photographing in the street or in any genre of photography, e.g. straight angular shapes are active and dynamic and imply movement to many people.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this. You are right. I need to look into this a bit more.

It can be quite challenging to get other photographers to appreciate this kind of experimentation. Be confident in trying new things! In my club the majority are older men who love landscapes. Ironically there is an 80+ chap who won many European comps in his day and shoots some of the most experimental work in the club. He's so good, but there is virtually no feedback because they can't comprehend his work.

I know that this type of style might not ber for everyone. I like to experiment and test different styles. I have learned a lot.

I came across your channel a few days ago and this video made it to my feed with a surprisingly good timing: I just started doing street photography more seriously with this idea that images could benefit from blurryness somehow, contrary to the perfectly sharp images that seems to be the norm. I no longer feel alone in pursuing the impressionistic way! 😁 It is very challenging indeed to find what works and I am experimenting with all the techniques you mentioned; in addition, I found using a tilt-shift lens especially inspiring, mainly using the tilt function that allows moving the focus plane. So this is my tip for you as a way to thank you for this video!

Great vid, I think that impressionistic / non conventional images look very impressive when blown up to large sizes as the viewer can get lost in the image. Instagram just doesn't have the scale,
@ForsgardPeter6 ай бұрын
You are right. These type of images are not at its best in small size.

Hi Peter, Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience of impressionistic street photography. I am impressed by the helpful tips you provided in your video, especially the tip to pay attention to the position of the sun, which opened up new perspectives for me. I also find the technique of consciously using blur and using window reflections as a creative element extremely inspiring. I already practise some of your suggestions, such as using my own texture shots, but these have been lying unused on my hard drive until now. Your ideas on how to incorporate them effectively into impressionistic street photography have given me a useful impetus to utilise these reserves more creatively. I would particularly like to emphasise the image at 3:50 in your video, which particularly fascinated me. It impressively illustrates the power of the techniques you describe and the marvellous effect you can achieve with them. I appreciate your clear and understandable way of making complex content accessible and after watching your video I feel encouraged and inspired to look at street photography with new eyes. Many thanks for that! Best regards, Sabine

After eschewing traditional camera gear and shooting with my iPhone for the past ~10 years (and the reliable look of those images) it's been a bit jarring trying to learn my new X-T5 and create images that please me more than the look I've become accustomed to from tens of thousands of iPhone images I've photographed all over the world. The idea of using my "proper camera" for more impressionistic images, rather than simple representative images, really appeals to me.
@ForsgardPeter6 ай бұрын
Yes, it takes a while to get used to a proper camera. X-T5 is a good choice.

Thanks Peter. I have read a book recently by a scientist who has found that a it is impossible to be totally objective about anything and even shape has a emotional and subjective effect on peoples’ feelings. As a qualified art teacher with many years experience teaching I know about and have taught about shapes and the emotional impact and feeling of different shapes and also composition. Also people have different reactions to shape and some of that is affected by culture as well. I agree with everything you are saying about impressionist photograph but the objective type of pretty image is not so objective.
@ForsgardPeter6 ай бұрын
I agree that being objective is impossible. We all have backgrounds that affect how we see the world. With our background, the things we show in our pictures are affected by that. Then there is also the viewer. I have talked about this when I mention stories. We all might have different stories about the image when we see it.
@chrisbrown64326 ай бұрын
That is a great point about stories. Thanks for that. I think that is right.

@@misstracee the name of the book is “How Emotions are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain. The author is Lisa Feldman Barrett. It was published in London by Pan Books in 2018. One of the subjects in the book is Emotions and Cognition that is relevant to my comment. Be prepared for a long involved read but it well explained research by the author with some historical scientific theories that are discussed.

I rarely allow myself to write, but more and more cartoons appear, let's call them like you, who consider themselves creative people with a camera in hand and especially in Street Photography, you have no idea where you are from, but they do not have a creative view of this genre . Or to put it this way, you don't have an internal lens in you Mr. One Button Pusher. The bad thing is that nowadays everyone, regardless of age, pretends to be good at something. On the contrary, those who understand craft, because photography was like that many years ago, were secret people and in the true sense of the word CREATORS. People like you are AF buttons, nothing more and it doesn't even help you create and create a story in one shot. Mr. for a day
