I appreciate the encouragement to think for ourselves, to find what is true within ourselves when reading the Mahabharata (or any religious text), to ask questions with confidence knowing that this is part of our duty, and to follow what is true for ourselves, even if it means differing from 'god'. As Bibek Debroy states at the end: "The answer is not in the text, the answer is inside you."

In regards to the discussion on eating of meat, there was something the panelist did not elaborate on. The answer the brahmin gives: "You are only eating the 'flesh' of the animal, not the divine spirit i.e. the 'Brahman' (ब्रह्मन्), which animates it, so it is okay" This is only part of the answer, the other part of the answer, which is implicit and goes much deeper is: "However, when you are ready to sacrifice the flesh of an animal to make it your food, you too should also be equally ready to sacrifice your flesh, to be the food for someone/something else, because all you are sacrificing is your flesh, not the eternal Brahman (ब्रह्मन्) that resides inside you. You too should not be attached to your flesh either" Only someone at this level of realization, and truthful living, is "justified" to eat the flesh of another animal. Anything else is just "Convenient Hypocrisy" :) A little knowledge is indeed a dangerous thing

Law to Dharma lays a dichotomy yet again!! Let us not judge them for what's not being said , in fact most of the events in Maharata can keep us ponder for a lifetime and still now give us a conclusion

at 45:22 bibek debroy tells - mahabharat clearly tells that institution of marriage didn't exist until a certain point in time. women were free to go to whoever they choose. birth was determined by maternity which was always certain. Then a sage instituted the system of marriage. notion of adultery is completely a modern notion, it did not exist during mahabharat time.

The good discourse on mahabharata, dharma means just (the final virtue) however it has subjective terms, it is here the conflict of dharma. In modern society we follow the human actions and their consequences as premises of good or bad.

Dharma means "natural law". There are 2 types of opposites. Society created and nature created. Dharmic behavior is sure way of going beyond all opposites to become one with the transcendent one and experience the macrocosm.

The best part of this conclave is the discussion on mythology and dharma that reflects our mental wellbeing, while the worst part is the background advert of 'Rajanigandha' - a promotion for health degradation. The organiser should choose their brand partner wisely. It (Rajanigandha) spoils the whole event.

Alok Nayak Not sure if you are making fun of me...but the truth is that I barely have started reading this stuff. and Indian literature is more than vast. no other civilisation can match it. i wish i could say i will write a book, but something needs t o be done and school children should be taught to study indian literature and sanskrit should be given significance. .....well, if you are interested, then start reading. rather than rely on other people's interpretations. btw, some gurus are great and have read much, not all are the same.

The question by the young man, "why are we told not to question what has been done for millenia as a tradition?" Has he ever considered 2 things here: That the person/s whom he asked the question may him/herself not know the answer? He needs to find some one knowledgable to answer the question. You cannot ask the end user the logic behind any operation. For instance, how do you excpect me to answer the question as to why the computer or tablet needs to be fed the data a certain way? You ask me, I will say, because that is how it is done, & has been done. I am just the user. This is a question for an expert or a person with knowledge to answer. And, the best way, go out & seek the answer for yourself... that will help you understand 1000 more things you will encounter on the way. This type of questioning by today's "intellectual youth" is not curiosity or genuine questyioning... foir their intent is to pull down the issue & belittle the practitioner. Those who are genuinely looking for knopwledge don't outsource the quest for knowledge... they undertake their own journey.

Poonam Abbi If you are a developer then YES, you will ask how or why the data is fed that way, and that is how you change and improvise. So, sorry that’s not correct. It’s irritating to say Amish keeps justification based on what ‘writers’ of Ramayan or Mahabharat wrote. It’s the interpretation of the writer. So, there is NO connection to lord shiv or Krishn.

Then according to him feelings either don't exist or don't matter. To him it's just eating the flesh and not the Atma or Brahman . That's fine, but who said anything about the undestroyable Atma? People are talking about the flesh, don't eat the flesh . Wherebthe hell in this phrase does it talk about Atma? Also, if people are going to argue about the health benefits required for a kshatriya, lemme just say that there several pieces of research and experiments executed by the modern day scientists( that almost everybody is ready to get convinced by) which compare the effects of a plant based vs animal based diet. There is also a very well filmed documentary on Netflix about this if u don't believe me. If people are going start talking about how there is nothing bad with this creation, they better be brave enough to stand up for it and be ready to practice a lifestyle like an aghora. Aghoras I respect for the submission to God in their beautiful and possibly scary-apearing practices .I could happily keep going but this is not the place and I respect that.

By the way let's not bring treatment of people based on their varna here, there are very few instances of that, one such is how jayandrath would insult krishna, secondly krishna was a Royal blood by birth, butIn all it is a person's ability that made him, also on the other side karana was accepted by duryodhana as a Royal the intent behind it might be selfish but they could do it because it is possible, if it was so against the system it would not have happened.

These people are fine example of talent crunch in the field of education and learning. So few and downgraded people are engaged in doing below average work and are given awards. Bibek Debroy is padmshree and has done more damage than good to Indian culture by writing and translating upnishad and mahabarat. Its evident that he has not understood hindu text and acting merely as a translator of language from sanskrit to english. Amish is not worth of comment as he knows nothing true and meaningful about hindu scriptures. His talent is limited upto writing fiction based on epics. I feel sorry for them. Since there is no provision in law to punish them and there is no regulatory body to check, correct and stop their deeds, They are continuing to filth here and there. Young people must not buy their perception and intellect, which i doubt they have, and use their own understanding before reaching to any conclusion and then they will find that how wonderful things are corrupted by few people for their vested interest.

Harsch Kumar Lall , great observations on your part. Our Hindu epics contains vast psychological and philosophical knowledge that can be damaging to the young and untrained minds. It is for this reason that certain knowledge of these epics were kept secret from the lay public. Today, these knowledge is too public, and therefore can cause more harm than good !!!

i have to dislike this video because in order to go for an unconventional way, these guys dont know that they actually broke the backbone of DHARMA. first thing was wrong in case of VISHWAITRA, yess if he leaves all his actions and credit on GOD only then he is gonna free from his KARMA but that not happened he said i am the soul i cant do anything that dont make him free of action. now even INDRA knows that his good actions has been corrupted by eating meat, so he has no chance to become the next INDRA. so he made rainfall. that shows the action of VISHWAMITRA was not right. moreover AMISH says that PARIKSHIT was the son of only KUNTI who considered to be from YADU clan. but he forgot that in vedic culture INDRA has blessed kunti with ARJUNA but there was nothing like they had sexual relation. moreover if anyone says there was sexual relation then that was the process of NIYOG in which the child's father would be the person to whom mother married which is PANDU from KURU clan. so guys please you saying yourself as scholar but being only 24 years old, i know a bit more than you.

+Atul Maggu I think you did not get the context of Vishwamitra reference out their. The answer of Vishwamitra was not actually related to the actions of a man. it was related to the purity of the soul and/or body. Also, if you actually know the texts, in those chapter where this discourse between the Chandaal and vishwamitra happens,. he mentions the concept of 'Apaadh Dharma' which is the emergency dharma of a person or what should a person do in case of emergency. Now i would not actually give you answers for what exactly it is or how this answers your question. But i would like if you look over it. And i guess then your dilemma as to how exactly good or bad the 'actions' of Vishwamitra were, shall be clear. Now, as fr your moreover part, in this case too you missed the point by fare margin. If you again actually know the scriptures and their different interpretations one feminist interpretation actually rejects the provision of succession in niyog vidhi. Here i would like to mention that the ancient rules of hindu mariage were drafted by one sage named shwetaketu who brought the concept of unimarriage system in india. There is also reason stated for why he did that. But the point here is, his draft is criticised on the point that 'why do fathers only have the right to be considered as the family of his son?' in this case, as you have fairly established, pandu had nothing to do with the birth of arjuna other than claiming him as his son. and if this was not a sexual relationship so why cannot we simply recognize the child to be of kunti only? or if not only, why do we not recognize the child to be of kunti ALSO? See sir whatever you say has a very very deep impact. Mahabharata is famous for this kind of 'treachery' and that's the beauty of mahabharata. in this case, the only enlightened one who actually has the knowledge of mahabharata is mahabharata itself. So never ever claim you know more than anyone else. For one thing, you may be horribly wrong. or you simply may say something which impact the discussion in ways which you even did not know.
