Yeah, it was the crosses. Part of it is values dissonance I think. In Japan Christianity isn't as universal as in the west, so crosses are used as a cool motif without any intended religious significance. This obviously doesn't fly in the west where the cross is much more widely recognized as a religious symbol. This is a gross oversimplification but I remember having it explained to me this way.

We all have different feelings and opinions about everything because we're different people. We just... you know, aren't white, and while that generally(or strongly, for a lot of us) influences our opinions it doesn't mean we'll all think the same thing. Whenever I see "As a ***** person" start a phrase I know it's going to be either something that shows legit pride in their race/culture or some uncle tom bs. There's never a middle ground lol. I remember when my cousins and I first learned about it the Japanese version of Misty’s Tears. My cousin was so excited you could see her…assets 😅 I hate that TCPI has gotten slightly more censor happy in recent years. So many things are just so ridiculous to censor. It also bothers me how The Legend of Dratini got banned for guns, but they left them in during Here Comes The Squirtle Squad.

It's worth noting that for Adventures, most of the censoring is in the VIZ releases of the manga. The Chuang Yi releases keep most of the art in tact, although earlier volumes have the art flipped to left to right

Voltorb Flip is actually really fun. I enjoyed learning how to play it on my recent first playthrough of SS and am actually considering grinding for a Dratini next playthrough. As for Sinnoh's game corner, I stopped using it after I basically exploited the get rich quick scheme of the VS seeker at the mansion on route 212, especially after getting the Luck Incense. All I have to do is beat a Chatot and Roselia to get roughly 28000 Pokedollars.

I like it as well, but the actual process of earning chips through it is torture. You only get about a hundred in level 1, and while subsequent levels have a bigger payout, they also gain an RNG element that can cause you to lose and start from scratch through no fault of your own. Which makes getting those 10k-a-pop TMs like Thunderbolt, Ice Beam and Flamethrower a huge grind.

Sabrina's gengar card probably censored the cemetary because of the crosses, the other cemetaries have normal graves and pokemon was a lot more liberal with it's usage of religious imagry back then, but have made other changes to remove things like that.

3:44 The dragon's exalted set of the the tcg focused around pokemon being featured around and in both the pokemon league and N's castle as to cap off the black and white segment and transition to the BW2 era of cards. The use of these endgame locations are too symbolize the end of the journey that the bw segment had. From the looks of them too, they'd appear to be a subtle way of having "plasma" pokemon before that mechanic was introduced as more than a motif. These cards are fairly cool for fans of gen 5, referencing some cool and standout locations of the Unova region, especially as the early bw era sets mostly had the pokemon in vague biomes and monochromatic checkered rooms.

I recall something else about Misty that had to be censored, based on some Japanese articles and tweets. And it's random to the point of absurdity imo. Basically what I recall is that part of the JP fandom has been theorizing that the original anime staff (mainly the animator supervisors / character designers I guess) intentionally prevented Misty's bellybutton to be visible (exceptions were in swimsuit scenes from beach episodes. But it was definitely not shown in her standard outfit), despite it being always seen in old game art, 3D models, and depictions in other media; as well as her classic anime outfit so prominently featuring the yellow crop top. The discrepancy ofc lies in that Jessie also has a midriff baring outfit, and yet it does show her bellybutton at all times. Granted, Misty's shorts being a tad high waisted might be the logical explanation, but apparently there was a NEP (next episode preview) where her bellybutton was perfectly visible in one scene, only for it to be removed in the final episode. And when Misty went back to wearing her classic outfit in her recent appearances, most likely made by different animation teams, it now has her bellybutton shown like it was always there. The inconsistency and sudden change of mind over such a tiny detail is quite strange, but once you notice it probably can't be unseen. As a kid I was often quite confused as to why Misty's bellybutton was always missing when watching the original anime, and now I found so odd that it is now perfectly visible in Journeys, all while she was wearing the exact same outfit. Makes one wonder why the OG staff did that cover-up in the first place. Maybe they thought that it could've been too arousing for younger audiences watching? I'm not sure, considering that Jessie was already there for the older kids and no cover-up was needed. Idk, maybe they could've solved this by giving Misty a less revealing outfit if the bare midriff from her game design was so much of an issue back then. Something that did eventually happen during her Advanced / Chronicles appearances, funnily enough. All of this is kinda weird in hindsight, considering that every generation / region has introduced at least one midriff baring female trainer, sometimes multiple of them like in Hoenn. It's a long time tradition at this point. And it is one that, fittingly enough, Misty basically started.

Also, I recall that in basically all other media, Misty is usually depicted as a teenager (even in the RGBY timeframe), thus making her fashion sense a bit more age appropriate. But if true, she was definitely aged down in the show to match Ash's, based on some dialogue.

I can definitely see them sticking with the former or younger to keep in line with the Ash shipping that was prominent during her time in the anime. Ultimately, it really was a pointless censor on their part, as she's a fictional character that people will take interest in regardless and because as you had mentioned earlier, the midriff would become fairly common shortly thereafter. If they wanted to tone her down like that, they should have gone all the way and give her either really long and baggy clothing, or something akin to a Victorian era style dress, not whatever outy belly button thing they did.

Always found the censorship of cultural aspects (i.e. Brock's Maracas) to be kind-of dumb. So long as the jokes are lighthearted and not shown to be malicious, then I feel it should be fine. The arguments of cultural appropriation and sensitivity just restricts the potential of discovering and learning about other cultures. Also, people tend to forget that stereotypes come from truths of a specific culture. Seeing maracas in kid shows led me to learning about Latin music growing up. Did not know about the censorship within the Adventures manga, though I was aware of the cross edit with the gym leaders. The poses and leg positions show a clear change, since that type of restraining doesn't stop gravity from being a thing. Kind-of disappointed of the abuse segments being edited because these things really establish the horribleness that happens to the characters. Downplaying the acts could also decrease the severity of the bad relationship, as the confirmation is turned into implication instead.

Long after they lost the dubbing rights, went bankrupt and got asorbed by Konami, 4Kids censorship policy still influences Pokemon to this day. LOL
